Any other show would have milked this whole steroid thing for maximum drama, but I liked that they genuinely kept this between Eric and Smash.

Coach Taylor loved Smash...great coach who was more focused on mentoring his players than winning titles...I loved the scenes in season 3 where Coach Taylor went to bat for him even to set up the tryouts and get him into college...also when Smash visited Coach at his house before he headed to A&M...emotional scene

@Bolt6604 3 года назад
That's the thing though. Because Taylor took a more mentoring role with his kids, made his kids want to run through a wall for him. Which ended up giving him a couple of state titles. They go hand in hand.

Chills man. Coach doesn’t sugarcoat anything. Most of the time, the players and other ppl around him didn’t like his statements/ass chewings, but they are better because of it. Coach displays pure accountability and teaches real life lessons. We need more Coach Taylors in the world

Season 3: Smash, in thinking he is doing the right thing, wants to give up his dream to be Regional Manager of Alamo Freeze. Really quite touching as he doesn’t want his mama to work so hard anymore, “I was supposed to buy you a house!” And Smash mama talks some sense into him. One of my favorite lines from that exchange “All you gon’ tell Coach is ‘thank you.’ After all that man has done for you, he could’ve lost his job, Brian.” I love the continuity and call back. They didn’t make it a big deal but to the characters that knew (Coach, Smash, Mrs. Williams), it is a HUGE thing.

Taylor broke the rules to save Smash. It would have been a good plotline if a couple seasons later the scandal broke, and Taylor then had to fight for his job.

I always saw this another way where coach Taylor is not always the selfless hero but looking out for his best interests. He's helping Smash sweep this under the rug, so they won't have to vacate the wins that Smash participated in, Dillon can still be eligible for the playoffs, and he won't lose his job after just one year. Try observing this from outside the viewpoint of Dillon, Tx. Would the opposing towns/ teams be this accepting knowing the Panthers star player was on steroids?

hypothetically if coach did turn in smash, although those things would have been true, it would also mean that smash's nfl dream would have been dead and he'd end up like that guy washing dishes. so what coach did was actually what's best for both of them
@lajohnson1ly
@lajohnson1ly 3 года назад
I don't agree with your interpretation. Key remark @1:12: "You realize just how far I'm stickin' my neck out for you?" He's putting his faith into Smash that he'll stop the steroids on his own by not turning him in, and he's increased the stakes for himself, his career, and his family, unless Smash changes, because if it ever came to light that Smash continued after Coach knew, it would be all over. Yeah, this solution serves his and Smash's needs, but he'll be able to sleep at night.

Coach Taylor is a short-tempered power-tripper who loves nothing more than hysterically screaming at 16 year-olds, and only “mentors” the ones who help him win football games. Along with his good qualities he also embodies everything bad about football culture

I lost respect for Smash after this. He was incredibly self absorbed with the steroids. He should not have done that but he was only thinking about his dreams and not what his family would have gone through with this.

Coach basically swept this under the rug cause if he didnt his season would be over and it would look like he gave steroids to smash even tho he didnt lol

That's pretty cynical. Coach's number one priority was the kids.
