This is not biased towards you and your podcast but your countdown is way better than a whole lot of other podcasts by far. Anyone else agree with me on this at least should give thumbs up.
As a UTSA fan, I dont see NY6 as a possibility. My main goal is to win Conference championship, get a bowl win and keep Traylor and Trey Moore in San Antonio.
A&M will go big game hunting and at worst settle for Mike Elko because that’s what they do. But if Arkansas finally drops Pittman, Traylor checks every possible box Arkansas needs, and he wouldn’t have to deal with the same political nonsense an A&M coach has to handle(which is the one thing we don’t know if Traylor can do is handle the absurd amounts of attention a massive brand would get) He can hire exciting offensive coordinators and in general has a strong connection to quality assistants and especially people who recruit the state of texas(and even more East Texas). He knows how to rally every fan and donor standing to maximize the level of support they think they can give, tear that limit down, get them to give more, and then find more people to do the same. Arkansas needs that level of support to compete in the SEC and not be an also ran. Also, Traylor knows Arkansas and Arkansas knows Traylor from his time as AHC, and his Texas recruiting history in the power five proves he can adjust to the highest level. It would be a homecoming of sorts for Traylor as Arkansas is a lot less different to East Texas than San Antonio, and now he has a 3 million population state that bleeds cardinal and white and has enough wealth to bring success, but just needs a reason to devote all that they have to a football team that has failed them ever since Houston nutt left. That’s a lot easier than winning over a city that is already chopped up among the power four especially when your players are constantly being sought by even bottom level power four teams because UTSA’s donor base is young, not that wealthy, and not that large. Jeff Traylor could be transformational to Arkansas just like he was at Gilmer and UTSA, and break through that ceiling. He could be the next Frank broyles. I hope he gets that chance.
Jeff is a good coach. He has shown he can recruit well and win consistently. But he still has a major gap in his resume that will make a lot of P5 schools pause. His record against ranked and P5 programs. His record in "big" games has a lot to be desired.
UTSA fan/alum: Not really focused on NY6 tbh. We want the AAC championship and a Bowl win. 3 peat sounds awesome for recruits as the new CFP format approaches. 🤙🏽 BirdsUp!
Good stuff as always Trey. One question and one comment: 1. Is there a path for 9-1 (6-0) Toledo to NY6 if they win out? Only loss is a two point loss at Illinois week 1. 2. I don’t see Fritz being interested in Miss St. He’s smart with seeing a path to victory as a program builder, and he has never been a guy who recruits top guys. Miss St is a rebuild, and I’m not sure Fritz’s run heavy offense would be popular in Starkville. However, if someone steals Leipold, returning home to Kansas would be too hard to pass up for Fritz. Obviously Leipold would leave Kansas in the best place it’s been in 15 years, so it wouldn’t be a rebuild if the right coach can hold things together. It’s a basketball school so less pressure on football. The Big 12 is wide open without a blue blood so there is a path to victory. The KU admin is making huge investments in football. Like Tulane, KU is an AAU school so Fritz can recruit his caliber of guys to develop. Finally, the Kansas AD used to work at Tulane. No overlap with Fritz IRRC, but still an interesting connection. I can also see Duke as a fit for Fritz for similar reasons, if Elko leaves: similar academic profile in recruiting to Tulane, wouldn’t be a rebuild, relatively winnable conference.
Idk man about Tulane being in the driver's seat. They only have 1 win at this point in the season with an above 500 record (Memphis, unless you count Nichols an FCS team). They've had four games decided by 1 score and all of those teams are 4-6 at best right now. They'll only play 1 more team with a winning record in UTSA and it honestly wouldn't surprise me if they lost that one with the way they've been playing.
Yup, the teams in the MWC beat each other up to bad to have any of us in the NY6 at this point. Speaks volumes to the parity within our league. That makes the games exciting but it sure doesn't do us any favors of getting that NY6 bid. Tulane's resume is looking too strong to overcome. Would be cool if we can get some good bowl tie-ins between the MWC and AAC in the future as I think it will continue to come down to those two leagues. With one or the other's champion going to the playoffs and all our bowls against other leagues, we never get too many head to head matchups. Even the occasional in season matchups are few and far between. I wouldn't mind a few home and home series with the likes of UTSA, Rice and UNT. Hell we (USU) have about as much history with UNT as we do with Air Force; and I was looking forward to matchups with UTSA during that brief time we were in the WAC together. Rice would be cool because I used to live in Houston and have a few buddies back there that are Rice fans; the two teams have never played and it would be nice to have bragging rights over those dudes (assuming USU comes out ahead).
Imagine if it came out that A&M called Traylor and he declined the job to stay at UTSA … what that would do for recruiting and the perception of UTSA state-wide and perhaps nationally
Try these on for size: 1: HC Lashlee to Arkansas 2: HC Jimbo Fisher to SMU 3: HC Elko to Texas A&M 4: HC Fritz to Duke 5: HC Cignetti to Tulane 6: HC Drayton fired; UCLA Analyst Ken Niumatolo to Temple
@@patpozzuto4809 For OC, Glenn Thomas is the Steeler OC Analyst. He was Temple QB Coach and OC in 2015 and 2016. He can use an HC Niumatolo backfield as part of a Run/Pass Option scheme without going Triple Option. For DC, Fran Brown is the DB Coach at Georgia. He was the same at Rutgers. He might be ready for DC leadership.
@@stephensipe5405Sounds really good to me, I was very disappointed that Fran Brown isn't already back with Temple... I guess Drayton wanted someone from the Taxas Staff.
@@patpozzuto4809 Well, DC Withers has never been FBS successful at DC or HC with authority over a DC. A DC Fran Brown is worth the hire risk especially if offset by recruiting. Now if he is a really good DC, having Rutgers and Georgia experience helps, maybe he could be an HC Brown at a future date. However, I expect HC Ken Niumatolo to stay at Temple as long as he is winning. Out of 14 seasons at Navy, 10 were 6+ winning seasons.
I disagree. There are many coaches that wouldn’t be interested in that job, over what they currently have. TAM also won’t pay a new coach 10-15 mil a year to lure them away. Money isn’t everything and they’ve been ( relatively) booty for almost 100 years.
Then they would get Nick Saban if that was true. They can get just about anybody they want but not anybody. I don't know if Norvell or Lanning would want to leave quite honestly. Texas A&M is not an easy job, It just pays well. The expectations are unrealistic to the results they have produced. It would be interesting to see who they want and if they can lure that person away if they are in a very good situation.
@@GR-bn3xj people don’t seem to get how unimportant some schools, outside of their own area, are in other places. TAM may be a big deal in TX, or in some circles, it’s not in other states. In addition is the lack of current national prominence.
My main opposition from an objective standpoint to bringing Rhett lashlee to Arkansas: the donors built SMU up due to reasons that have nothing to do with him. They were desperate to get in the power conferences. And they spent like hell to make it. Arkansas needs help BUILDING from the roots and they need a guiding hand and Rhett just has not done that before.
UTSA has no shot at NY6. SMU, Memphis winner will still have a chance and as long as Tulane wins out has a chance. But if AAC champion has 2-losses and other three G5 conferences that are vastly superior and stronger and deeper or stronger at the top than AAC. CUSA has Liberty and New Mexico State as stalwarts. If Liberty goes undefeated and if JMU gets waiver approval and should and win out, then those two teams will get NY6 bid or bids probably.
I think they do man, not confident enough to put money on it but I think UTSA has legit chance I agree on JMU…if they were to get waiver, they get the nod
I doubt very much that even a 2 loss AAC champ won't get the NY6 spot... depending on who it is it's even possible that a 3 loss AAC Champ will still get the NY6 bid... Definitely Tulane or SMU, good chance with either Memphis or UTSA, but they would have to face Tulane or SMU... ignore all other polls at this point, the only one that matters is that CFP poll.
@@daddio159yeah not sure what he's talking about. At the beginning of the year it look like the Mountain West was running away with it but as the games have been played, the AAC has four pretty strong teams for a group of five. They don't have the wins that Fresno has But more importantly they don't have the bad losses. Memphis Tulane and SMU have only lost to teams they were supposed to lose to. Sometimes a quality loss, like a one possession game against Missouri or Tulane hanging in with Ole Miss to the end, can do more than a win over a smaller team. Unless UTSA somehow wins it, it's going to an AAC team. The college football committee has already showed they favor the AAC, And since that's who decides, I think it's fair to say as long as there's not a three loss AAC team, they get it.
@@GR-bn3xj I’m with you. I think that there are only two MW teams that still even have a shot now. They screwed the pooch and it’s the AAC’s to lose. Now, if Fresno ( maybe UNLV) were to win out, and Tulane, SMU ( maybe even Memphis) and Liberty all lose one, then maybe. Even still, no g5 is superior to the AAC. MW may be an overall 2nd, and JMU and Liberty are competitive teams ( maybe), the AAC is the best G5, and might even be the 5th best overall league in total. Need to wait till the end to say that definitively. Lol. I’m typing this while driving, don’t be too judgy lol.
