We took a fun 2 day ride down Hwy 1 (aka. Pacific Coast Highway or PCH) from Salinas to San Luis Obispo. We enjoyed a relaxing stop for coffee & pastries at Alta Cafe in Monterey, and then lunch/beers at the Big Sur Taphouse halfway through the first day. Paul's Slide just south of Big Sur and Lucia (mile 73 on our route) is still technically closed, but is passable by bicycle after 6pm when the construction crews go home. This meant that we needed to ride about 1.5 hrs in the dark, but it was not a big deal as we had lights with us and got into San Simeon for the evening just before 9pm. Day 1 with 116 miles and ~9k ft of gain in the bag! On the second day we rode from San Simeon to Morro Bay where we enjoyed some sight seeing and then cortados at Daisy's Organic Coffee & Tea. The last leg of our journey took us back inland to SLO where we enjoyed a celebratory lunch & beer at Big Sky Cafe. We then took Amtrak's Coast Starlight to get back to our starting point in Salinas, which cost just $30 per person, plus $20 per bike. Advance booking was required, as tickets sold out about a week prior.
