Coastal communities in Southern California are bracing for potential flooding from Hurricane Hilary, which is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm this weekend.
Hilary, which is churning off the Pacific coast of Mexico, is expected to reach California on Sunday as a tropical storm.
“Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, are expected across portions of southern California and southern Nevada, which would lead to significant and rare impacts,” the National Weather Service said. “Elsewhere across portions of the Western United States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected.”

I'm from Florida, I was really shocked that California was getting a hurricane, y'all stay safe . Get plenty of batteries and charcoal!. And water!! I'm still shocked. I really thought it be us here in Florida like every year. We are still fixing things here in ft .Myers a year later. Be safe.

Worst storm I ever experienced personally was typhoon karen on Guam . After it hit the front side it wrapped around the island and combined with another system from the north and did a double whammy . Pretty gnarly , luckily we survived. It jacked up quite a few of our friends . Cat 5? It should have been a 8.5 when it did the sucker punch!

No, it really will. During summer in Florida, the ocean water is warm which helps the hurricane thrive. I’ve been to California before, the water was REALLY COLD (atleast I think it was) even during the summer. Also, when it eventually hits land it will weaken.

100 percent agree. Grew up in Connecticut We get tropical storms and sometimes hurricanes. I lived inland but we still had major trees fall, power out for week or so, flooding . Its no joke. Im in la now, about 30 mins from coast. We are preparing aa much as we can. But most are just laughing it off.

It can be catastrophic, but if cities and CalTrans prepare drainage canals and neighborhoods check your gutters and storm drains for debris ahead of rain starting, you can prevent flooding

We don’t only remnants. But there actually was a hurricane that came dangerously close to San Diego in 1858 but stayed offshore. And then the one in 1939. But the water off the coast of California is too cold for hurricanes to form in order for a hurricane to form the ocean water has to be warm.
