Coastal foraging for Clams,, Cockles and Scallops. Shellfish are abundant on our coastline, all it takes is a little bit of know how. Easy to find and easy to catch they can be terrific bait for fishing or make a delicious meal - clams, cockles and scallops I show how to find them all. A bottle of table salt and a bucket is about all you need and can turn into some great family fun.

@@TheFishLocker I'm from the West Coast of the US, can confirm that the beaches are boring. Probably because everyone goes and illegally harvests anything edible (fish, crabs, seaweed, mussels, clams, barnacles, etc.) so the beaches are pretty barren. We have millions of sand crabs (actually not crabs at all) though, which are apparently good fishing bait. I love razor clams, but the Pacific Ocean razor clams look like the big oblong one you dug out of the hole. Good luck finding one here if the rest of the crowd hasn't gotten them already.

When I was in the army ,a long time ago ,I was stationed in Alaska and one time my company went to Kodak island, we camped on the beach we had a field kitchen with us , and we caught sea run dolly varden trout,they were fallowing the salmon up this stream , all of them were about 28 inches long. We caught Dungeness crab under an old pier with nothing but a piece of string that we tied fish guts on and we picked mussels of this rocky point,you could pick a 5 gallon bucket in no time flat ,the reason I mentioned the field kitchen is that the cooks out did them selves cooking all we brought to them and we ate like kings. These same cooks back on post ,Fort Richardson , would burn water ,but why they shined on that trip is a mystery. But after that trip I’ve always loved mussels.

You make me homesick! I moved to Texas miles from any coast. I miss my childhood holidays beachcombing on the south coast at Weymouth, Lyme Regis and West Bay. Texas beaches, the only one I have seen, are nothing compared to home. Best find I had was the top of an Ammonite (about 8 inches long) which I found in the clay on the beach above Skegness.

That last clam you dug up is a mud gaper. Their a soft shelled clam but the spouts on them are really tough and are great for bait for shore fishing. You can use them in spots where the crabs and prawns are destroying baits before any fish have the time to get them. Flatties love them.

Tam M - That makes perfect sense. There are a few lads that use them for bream fishing - which is often plagued by crabs. Great tip Tam. 👍🏻🎣🐚🐟

The clam you found is often harvested by clammers in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, in the states of Washington and Oregon. It is known as a geoduck. (Pronounced as "goo-ee-duck") The clam is often a good meter below the surface. If you look this up on RU-vid, you will see that most seasoned fishermen use a specialized tool for catching them. One other thing to note, the geoduck you found was on the small side. They make for very good eating, but look up how to prepare them. They have a skin that needs to be removed. Love your channel. Continued good luck fishing!

kevin buckler - I did do a bit of research into what they were when I got home. They were absolute bruisers, proper cod bait clams.haha. A few folks have laughed at me for putting the scallops back. I haven’t been able to explain properly why I did it yet, partly because I felt they were too good for bait, and partly because they are quite special and I feel happier thinking of them living there rather than not. If that makes sense? I’m an odd one some times.lol. 😉😛

Nah. The Geoduck has such a huge siphon it's like a big bratwurst wedged in between shells that can't even close because that's how big the siphon is (it really does look a bit like a dick >_>). Other types of clam also have a siphon sticking out of them, so this is just a species of clam.
@df-nk6gd
@df-nk6gd 4 года назад
At 19 min in that was most certainly a geoduck clam. It just wasn't at its full extension, but was still decent size. The body of the shell gives it away. The razors are narrow with smaller bulbs....if you google geoduck it can show you how it may shrink up, but also how far that part handing out can extend or grow.
