I love our coat of arms, the white and red fields represent a stylized bulwark/wall of Christendom against the Ottomans, since Emperor Maximilian I. Inherdted Croatia in 1493. he saw it as a battleground of a world conflict between the Crucifix and the cresent. Also star and moon of "Croatia proper" is also used for Bosnia/Illyria and is a stylization of the Virgin Mary "the Morning Star". Anyway, great video! I love three crowned leopard heads since it is maybe the oldest Croatian/Dalmatian heraldic symbol with roots in mid 13th century! 🇭🇷🇭🇷

This coat of arms got installed by Maximilian, yes but it actually has something to do with the word "square" since it is similar to the name "Croat / Hrvat" in german "Quadrat". So he basically made this coat of arms reffering to the "Quadrats" (Croats).

@@councilofknowledge I’ve read about it a while ago in a german study about all the coat of arms of the former holy roman empire & austro-hungarian empire. Very interesting! Unfortunately I cannot remember the names od these historians anymore.

Two silver lines on the coat of arms of slavonia are rivers sava and drava that signify the borders of slavonia toward the north and south, or hungary and bosnia if you will.

I think including that star and crescent shield on the Croatian flag is silly and not needed when you have already the ancient chequers arms for Croatia. That spot should be for the many and ancient Croatian lands and people that inhabit/ inhabited Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thank you Matt but I think the star and crescent go as far back as the Byzantine empire, so you are right but I see why they use them also

@@councilofknowledge Hmm, I don't buy that sorry, it's acknowledged by all scholars and historians that heraldry started to be used ( on knights first) in Western Europe at the start of the 12 century AD. 50 - 60 years later when it reached Croatia its probable that the 25 red and white chequers was used as representing Croatia. The mystical arm and sword coming out of the cloud of Bosnia arms would be nice to see on the Croatian flag but it wont happen in the present political climate.

Due to the fact Bosnia and Herzegovina isn't a part of Croatia currently wit would be dumb to use. But the coat of arms of Croatian kingdom has the Bosnian arm.
