The term is related to the surcoat. Surcoat is a piece of material worn in medieval Europe. For men, it was worn over armour. For women, it was a kind of outer cloak.
Although coat of arms was designed for the battlefield, it was an important part of the medieval tournament which was a kinda show like mock fight organized for coronations, baptisms, weddings etc.
A coat of arms has many different components. The shield, crest, supporters and sometimes helmets, torse, mantling and compartment make up the term coat of arms. Modern heraldry also has motto at the bottom.
