Heraldry is the practice of devising, granting, displaying, describing, and recording coats of arms and heraldic badges. Officers of arms (Kings of Arms, Heralds and Pursuviants) practice heraldry and also rule on questions of rank or protocol.
The origins of heraldry stretch back into ancient times. Warriors often decorated their shields with patterns and mythological motifs. Army units of the Roman Empire were identified by the distinctive markings on their shields (see left). These were not heraldic in the medieval sense, as they were associated with military units, not individuals or families.
Truly heraldic devices seem to have been first used in Carolingian times. Seals and banners confirm that they were being used in the Flemish area of Europe during the reign of Charlemagne (768-814 AD).
The emergence of heraldry as we know it today was linked to the need to distinguish participants quickly and easily in combat. Distinguishing devices were used on surcoats ("coats of arms"), shields, and caparisoned horses, and it would have been natural for knights to use the same devices as those already used on their banners and seals. A formal system of rules developed into ever more complex forms of heraldry to ensure that each knight's arms were unique (at least within the same jurisdiction).

The shield you like is the famous cammander and constable of France Bertrand Du Guesclin.. I was also surprised while researching the video with all the different meanings every single shape had on a shield.... Also the nobles should have been able to locate each other in order to avoid killing someone worth a lot of momey if captured alive... 😂Thank you for watching my friend!

Very informative Nik can i ask what about a man at arms if he is rich enough to afford full equipment he could have a shield so would he be able to display a coat of arms if no what colour could his shield be . I only ask because i will order more claymore castings soon and have no clue . Regards Gav.
@MedievalWargamer
@MedievalWargamer 3 года назад
Thank you Gav!!Well let me explain to you how it worked.. the men employed directly by himself to be his arms men - would probably wear his colours - so for example, a heavy padded jacket made up of four sections of cloth in two of the lord's colours, with the diagonal-opposites being in matching colours. They would also likely wear his sigil (eg White Boar) sewn onto their breast. During battle, they would start grouped together under a banner displaying the colours and/or the sigil. However, over time, the lower lords didn't always have a standing army - it was expensive. So they would either hire professional arms-men when they needed them or they would gather (volunteers or strong-armed) peasants in from the villages they controlled. These peasants would have an arming/padded jack (heavily padded jacket) if they were lucky. They would be very unlikely to have the lord's colours. Hope my answer helps my friend!

Interesting video mate, though you could probably do a whole series on heraldry as its so complex. I read somewhere that the word 'black barred' came from the use of a black stripe to denote illegitimate children.
@MedievalWargamer
@MedievalWargamer 3 года назад
Thank you B&Q! Good idea I may start a series on heraldry.. I will have a look regarding what you mentioned... I am pretty sure that most bastard sons had a diagonal line over the coat of arms of their fathers. Interesting to invastigate!

my familly coat of arms reads azur (blue) with 3 macles positioned 2 and 1. What would this mean?
@MedievalWargamer
@MedievalWargamer 3 года назад
Very interesting ..although i am not an expert but from my latest research i read that Mascles are supposed to represent the links which composed chain armour. Also the blue as i mentioned in the video represents some type of Sea-River.. also it could be the colour of an eastern sky, probably derives the name from the Arabic lazura.... the name being introduced from the East at the time of the Crusades maybe someone from the family was a crusader' ..Thank you for watching my friend!

So how do I paint up my army ? Does each figure get its own design on a shield?
@MedievalWargamer
@MedievalWargamer 3 года назад
Yes for sure if you are painting shields for major Nobles ... if you paint for lesser Men at arms they would probably have had colours similar to their lord probably quartered or halved.. but not the exact shield as this would be only for the Noble himself.

Major portions of your information is completely wrong according to that venerable book, The Complete Guide to Heraldry by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies as well as Heraldry by Henry Pasten-Bedingfeld, Rouge Croix Persuivant and Peter Gwynn-Jones, Lancaster Herald. Nice paint jobs on the miniatures, however.
