Majestic but lethal, the Spectacled Cobra is one of the “big four” snakes and second highest responsible for the majority of snake bites in India. This one is just a baby that can still pack a deadly punch and is quicker to use its venom indiscriminately in self defense. Adults can grow to 5 feet in length. It’s most well recognized and revered for its impressive hood which expands when threatened and features distinctive markings resembling spectacles. They are quite comfortable in urban areas with Edwin and his team often called in to move them to their more natural habitats. Here Edwin uses his patented hat trick :) to calm the snake before gently moving him away from this busy setting.
Edwin Dunkley is herpetologist from Portsmouth UK focused on reptile conservation in the Indian Sub Continent and other parts of the world. He is known as “The Last True Snake Man of West Bengal.”
