Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2021 😎 UPDATE: I just released a new DRUM LESSON PACK! -> bit.ly/CobusLessons. 5 lessons, 90 minutes, for 27 bucks. It will make you better at tuning drums, mixing drums, I'll show you my practice routine, my worst habits as a self-taught drummer, and teach you one of my favourite linear licks. Thanks for being here!
"Too loud! You gotta chill!" Says everybody every time I even attempt to practice this song. So sad how some people have fallen ignorant to the qualities of rock music.
+Juan Miguel Sanchez Please, don't give up and play as loud as you can. I'm drummer to and what more i play in worship band in my church but they wont break me anyway ;) so keep strong.
+Mates Mrozek Thanks man, I have since found my own time in the music room to play as loud as I can without disrupting. I play drums on worship songs too, just havent played in a full band yet.
dude.....u sound exactly like me. hell it took me a literal year just to be able to practice on my church's set without getting harassed every second to either get permission from someone and/or get off of it. for crying out loud, the set didn't even belong to the church but one person(the drummer himself who's name was tod)!!
That was amazing...i have been watching Cobus for years now and he has grown as a drummer so much...he is exceptionally quick now and his technique has become really really good....the thing i see is this kid spends a huge amount of time on his kit....he knows very well where each piece of equipment is and he can.play freely without having to think as much....his chops are becoming world class.
I have always had this thought going through my head when I've watched your covers. I love the energy you put into the performance. You're not covering, you are performing. I love the energy and passion. Especially, in the Kings and Queens cover.
This is literally one of my favorite covers of any song on that I've seen. It's a top quality drumming performance coupled with the awesomeness of the Foo Fighters. The overall quality, your skills, the music of the Foo Fighters, and your enthusiasm and energy make so entertaining to watch. I won't exaggerate, I've watched this cover like four times in one sitting in a row. Basically, what I'm saying is, I love you Cobus in the manliest way possible.
Can't believe the stuff this man can do with a song, adding in his own personal touches in places I wouldn't imagine it would fit :S I found some inspiration in this cover in the making of my version of the song, and would really appreciate if anyone who sees this would take a look!
Anaximander29A "This video is part of The 101 Series and was filmed, edited, engineered, mixed, mastered, and produced in its entirety by Cobus Potgieter." Found that in the description.
I had to play this song like a year ago, my teacher insisted on me trying to play all of that with one bass drum pedal. :/ I can't imagine how much easier it would be with a double pedal! Ur awesome! :)
Great drumming, great song but the mix wasn't good (especially as much was made of the mix) the cybals were not loud enough and the toms were almost inaudible (until you turned it right up, then they did sound good, just not high enough in the mix). i like the fills in the first part of the song, which for some reason you didn't play but hey ho. Also i'm not a fan of the meaningful looks into the camera, i prefer the 'cover' artist to play as if the camera is not there - my preference. Still great.
+IndiaRubber Man What are you listening to it on? The toms are definitely there, even at low volume, and they sound awesome, they have a nice tight sound. The cymbals also sit really well in the mix: they can be heard but they don't overpower everything else.
+IndiaRubber Man While I have to agree with you on the cymbals-part, the toms definitely were well-mixed in my opinion. Might be, because I'm using Sennheiser HD700s, they're very neutral in tone, not too focused on bass or mids/higs, so I'm getting all the frequencies at a very similar level. You can even easily hear all the sub- and overtones to each tom, so the recording quality is there, and the mix doesn't cut short on them. (Jeah, I do realise, that RU-vid codes audio down, but you can still here enough to conclude like I did.) What really stuck out to me, though, were the cymbals. They're WAY to silent, despite from a suddle "sshh" you can't hear much. Also the specific kind of "crispy" tone, right when hitting it, isn't really there, except for the intro. Sadly, it's way too smooth and less "crispy" when the action kicks in. I can only speak for myself, but doesn't this look boring to you in many cases? As a drummer myself, I notice myself going way less overboard when only playing the song for myself and noone else to hear. That's a totally different story when I'm performing in front of adience, though. From what I've seen from many drummers on RU-vid, the ones that don't behave like they perform for the (RU-vid)-audience got less views and subs than those that were actually "actively entertaining" the audience via video. I'm not an native english-speaker, so whenever I wrote something with " it means I'm not sure about the exact phrase/vocabulary to use. Anyway, I hope you can get what I'm saying, and no offence. Take an upvote for doing criticism right for once here on RU-vid, cheers! :)
Yes i too have noticed drummers going way too overboard with the pulling faces and choreographed smiling (very annoying) as you correctly say 'actively entertaining' the audience = and a lot of people seem to like it - lots of subs but for me it's distracting. I thought the toms were a bit dead but maybe that's my personal preference, i like a little ringing to the toms and the snare for that matter. i would also like to congratulate you on your English, well done, it is a shame we in England don't learn other languages to the same level as citizens of other countries. But 'Cest la vie' eh?
try cutting the high shelf to take out most of the cymbal characteristics. try cutting the low shelf to take out the resonance from the bass drum. and try to play the song note-for-note to match up with the original drum part, thn just boost the external drum part you played. hope this helped.
I love Cobus, but there are times when the drummer needs to calm it back just a tad. Taylor did that, Cobus added some intacacies that I felt were unneccasary
Cobus, I am a great fan and you probably don't take requests but this isn't a request so much as a recommendation; the band tool (drummer danny carey) have some insane tracks and I believe that you would enjoy them very much, and I you want to, it would be great if you did a cover
He was missing fills towards the beginning and that disappointed me because that's one of the best parts of the song....but overall he definitely made the song his and didn't just copy it
cobus would never say that. just because you were on britains got talent doesnt mean the world spins round you. he is a great drummer and i look up to him as a drummer my self.
Great cover but the volume mix is awfull, way to loud kick and Toms. The snare doenst really cut through, and your overheads are too quiet, at least that's my opinion
Honestly, not the best Cobus cover. This makes me appreciate Taylor Hawkins so much more... it's so hard to mimic his sound. Technically, this song is not super difficult, but no one drums it as well at Taylor (who Dave Grohl considers to be one of the best rock drummers of all time). Most of Cobus's covers elevate the drumming, but this one not so much.
tjdrummer90 Taylor Hawkins is indeed an absolutely amazing drummer. One of my big idols when it comes to drumming. He has such an original style of drumming. Cheers :)
tjdrummer90 Taylor is GREAT! If I was a kid in my 20's I would be all over his style and passion. Never overplays, amazing energy and stage presence/look...created to play drums in a rock band seen by millions and can sing really good too.
Nailed it on Hawkins...most can't see past technique and miss completely feel and energy...Hawkins IS rock n rock energy! Funny how drummers give the AC/DC guys a pass but with Taylor, they are critical...absurd! Jealously is ugly...
Not sure they give the AC/DC guy (Phil Rudd)a pass. I have seen him in a number of worse drummers ever, but I now what you mean. Some drummers have IT. Some don't (Presentation, style, fills. etc).
I didn't like the cover. You are an amazing drummer, but this song doesn't need that much fills and little tricks. It doesn't add anything, and the vibe of the song isn't great. In this song, the fills should be in the final chorus. This gives more variety in the song, and a build-up to the songs progression.
Totally agree. He also messed up the bass drum pattern in the first verse. The bass drum should play *with* the rhythm guitar, not in between the rhythm guitar's notes.
I was just going to say I dont like it, but here is why I was going to say that: If he only had 39 views and 2 subscribeers, I would say 'Well done, man!'. But with so much views, hes almost got a civic duty to be spotless and throw people in the right direction. What he is doing is doing a sub par performance with mainstream production values to it. The good old TV trick.'( It will make a star out of a shmuck kind of thing) Artistically speaking, his playing is all over the shop, and nothing goes with nothing, he is not adding anything to anything except one thing: Publicity, income (views + subs), promotion for DW (cool dudes that rock play DW). I love the guy and want the best for him, but I hate mainstream shit that sells cheese toastie as if it was caviar paste on french farmhouse bread.
Anything, but shallow. I'm just being honest to what I thought and shared it to see if it would ring true with some other folks. Don't mean to offend or take away Cobus' merits in any way.
It's not about views dude, we're musicians after all. Having said that, I'd love to make a fortune off youtube and pay off my house and loans. However, I dont get views, but I get gigs and respect. I'm a much better drummer than Cobus and you all, and that makes me a rich man :) how about that for a shallow view?
I sure wish I was as good as someone that I took the time to comment about how he is not as good as he is painted to be. Sure, that makes sense. I'm the one talking bullshit. I wish I was as good as Steve Jordan, man.
Zogztube Is that so? Probably every song he has covered sounds better with his drumming added to it, and it's the exact same thing with this song! It sounds great, and besides, what's so crappy with pop music? Pop music can be challenging too if you just want it to be. You can turn a completely standard pop song into a progressive pop song, and same goes for any music genre really. I bet you haven't even noticed that Cobus is doing ghost notes on quiet a few "pop crap" songs? That is, if you even know what a ghost note is. Go puke your poop out of your mouth somewhere else or just shut the fuck up! Because you don't know anything about music!
I checked your channel mate. You don't suck at any rate. Maybe playing a bit too much in terms of musicality but you got talent. Keep it up and dont let any one tell you otherwise.
@Will Britton...i fully agree...the snare could more a little more prominant however i think he is going.for more balance. The snare used to be overpowering in some of his other covers. And i agree with whoever said Taylor Hawkins would be impressed...at a minimum he would appreciate this interpretation...VERY GOOD JOB COBUS!!!
It was on a different account that my dad set up! There's no need to lie, as i said Cobus is a great drummer, i have nothing against him one bit! I'm just saying don't get to big for your boots that's all! cheers.
damm, i love this song watching it once per day, tapping my fingers following the whole video, ppl watching me like Wth is wrong this dude? Im sure you know what im talking about if you are drummer^^ so thank you cobus, i've learned drums with your covers, tapping all around with my fingers. Im sure we are many to have learned cos of you.I did some videos of me covering songs with my desk. if you could let a little comment i'd be like a justin bieber fan screaming all around^^ Just a Big fan
1: He is not bad at drums 2: He's just a kid 3: Cobus' "natural talent" and the kid's "jealousy," which he doesn't have, plays no role in what he said. Don't get me wrong, I don't know if the kid's story is true, but if it is, I'm not going to say Cobus was right in this situation. I don't think others should, just cuz Cobus has more recognition.
RU-vid deleted my comment on this video for no reason. I simply disagreed with an idiot (owned him) who said cobus is not talented. Gotta love the dictatorship we now live in! How long until you take this comment down RU-vid??
Cobus is a devout Christian so I don't believe he would say that. And even if the comments didn't contain swear words I don't think he'd do it anyway. I've never seen him be anything other than respectful and kind to other people despite some of the criticism and insults he receives at times. I like him as much for the man he is as well as the awesome drummer he is.
Oh wait, I did not notice the date until I saw I already liked this video and realised that was probably 10 years ago!, it still is a great video! This probably showed up in my timeline because of the passing of Taylor Hawkins. What a loss, he'll be missed a lot. This cover does right to his playing
