Not at all, the whole concept of max is impossible to sell out, he was making fun of coke while at the same time helping coke, and the fact that new coke was a huge commercial fail just gave max a huge win.
if anything it's a reflection of how "anti-corporation" and "anti-stablishment" are mere facades people parade to seem like individuals, as they obliviously purchase and consumed said ideologies through merchandise, like canned goods.

The wierd thing is, I always think of Pepsi when I hear catch the wave. Think because Pepsi seemed to be more popular with young people. Catch the wave makes me think of young surfers catching the wave and then grabbing a pepsi.
I worked in a mall in Houston one summer doing the Coke "Mall Money" promotion. You collected the tabs off the cans, trade it in on "mall money" and you could get Coke clothes (super stylish then) accessories and even concert tickets. Us who worked there were allowed to take whatever we wanted from the gear. I saw SO many concerts that summer. 85 or 86
