The real crux of the issue here is the lack of empathy from George's mom. "I did it to prove her wrong." --> Also, getting a CI out of spite is a pretty bad reason to get a CI--and isn't a good substitute for a reasonable conversation around some prejudiced views a family member was holding against another group of people. Removing the CI doesn't fix that underlying problem either. On the subject of CI's: Some people like using a TV remote, some people like walking to the TV to change the buttons. There's nothing wrong with a remote control--and we shouldn't judge people that use them or don't use them. Human culture shouldn't (and doesn't) hinge on whether or not people use TV remotes. I'm not any less Black because I have a television remote control in the same way that someone is less Deaf because they have a CI. Healthy cultures change grow and expand. And anyone that thinks otherwise is the real rotten apple in cultural barrel.

I was born as deaf and wear hearing aids and never used cochlear implants whole in my life. I heard about i. When i have 4 kids 3 hearing and one deaf. In past 2000 My mom and i was found out my 2nd son was 10 month old and has hearing loss. He is deaf like me. One time we went to dr for approve for hearing aids. Dr. Asked us if we want him have cochlear implants. I told him no. I prefer my son wear hearing aid period. My mom asked me why not. I say no way. Because one of my friend told me that one little girl wear cochlear implants and died. Thats cause from cochlear implant. Something. I dont want my son wear that and cause. I notice some deaf wear. My cousin wear too start last yrs or 2 years i dont remember. She is 20s something yrs old deaf and decided want wear cochlear implants. She started dont like it make headache and etc... i have 2 deaf cousin are borthwr and sister. Im not judge or against. im not force my son . I rather he better not wear cochlear implants. I want asked george is ur ex wife deaf or hearing. ? I dont think that u used cochlear implant make ur kids are deaf. Its from your genetic. Like my 2nd son is deaf like me. We have hearing loss when we was born. Happy u feel better.

CI should be implanted as early as possible if the child is born deaf or with profound hearing loss. The earlier they get the CI the better they will adjust and their speech will be flawless if they get CI before they would have started speaking. CI surgery is not a life-threatening surgery. There are risks with any medical procedure or surgery, but those risks are low for CI surgery and the benefits are incredible. CI technology also continues to improve and is much better than it was 10+ years ago. The scar is not visible because it is hidden under hair and it heals with only a very narrow scar that is never seen if they grow out their hair. I can't imagine not giving a child the best opportunity available to correct deafness and profound hearing loss. The man in the video didn't adjust well and that's very sad, but it is not the experience of most people who have CI. His story is important to acknowledge and is perhaps a cautionary tale that some people may not adjust as well as younger people. The outcome also depends on the person getting the CI. When someone gets the implant at an older age, they will have to work harder train their brain to recognize speech and other sounds. When babies get the implants, they adjust faster because babies are like sponges and soak up new experiences and learn faster. I think babies and young kids who are deaf or who have profound hearing loss and would benefit from CI should get the CI because not doing so is not giving them the best medical treatment available. We all want what is best for our kids and being deaf in a hearing world is challenging and limiting.

Getting a CI at 19 is much different than getting one as a baby. A baby or toddler will never remember a time when they were deaf and the CI will be natural and normal for them. I've never heard of a young kid who rejected their CI or who didn't learn to speak. They can hear and speak quite well and rarely have delays. But you can't get a CI at 19 years old and expect to just naturally understand speech, etc. You will need speech therapy and will have to put in a lot of hard work to get the most of the new device. That's why it's much better to get the CI as a young child. If the child hated it they could just not wear it or even have it removed, but it would be a shame not to give them the opportunity and option to use CI. It's a huge advantage.

it's way more complicated than that. a ci won't magically make someone completely hearing, they don't work like that. that's not even mentioning the complications and chronic pain that so many people with ci's get. getting it as a kid doesn't negate that, i just watched a video from a woman who got hers at 2 years old and had it removed as an adult because of pain and health problems. and also, if someone is deaf, that's an identity they can claim. i'm a hearing person so there was a point where i didn't know about tbis too, but we shouldn't take the opportunity to be a part of Deaf culture away from anyone.
