Hi Karen, you & Dill are great! We have two Cockapoo pups, male littermates. Your videos have been invaluable to us. I return to them often. It was challenging in the beginning, but the pups are doing great. Thank you for helping me to feel confident grooming them. I’m enjoying your whole Cockapoo series, thank you!

I'm sure your pup will be just perfect. The main thing is to make sure he or she is well socialised, and experiences lots of different situations. Before Covid, Dill was acting as a Pets as Therapy dog in school where young children could read to her - and have a cuddle as a treat after they had told her a story. They loved it, and so did she. Kindest Regards, Karen

Dill is so so good when you groom her she didn’t really move that much From Eva
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 3 года назад
Hello Eva, thanks for your kind comments. Yes, Dill is a little poppet when it comes to grooming. The secret is that it all started as soon as we brought her home. First just a little baby brush and getting her used to being touched and stroked - dogs are often sensitive about their feet. Lots of praise when she didn't fidget, and she soon started to relax and even enjoy the attention. Nowadays, she sometimes goes to sleep in the middle of grooming! I guess she can't see the point of both of us being awake. Kindest Regards, Karen

Can you do a video on how to carry a Cockapoos I really want a cockapoo 🐶
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 3 года назад
@@iaingraham9104 Sorry for the delay in replying, Iain. Try not to carry your dog too much, it's far better for them to walk. If you lift them up when something frightens them it can feed into their fears and make them clingy and nervous. That said, of course, pick your pup up if there is a real threat. If you are picking up your dog to put in a car or something like that, be very aware that your puppy may struggle and slip out of your arms. It's difficult to describe the hold, but when you take your Cockapoo to the vet's for its first visit, the vet will be happy to demonstrate. I'll also put it on my list of behaviours to cover in future videos. Kindest Regards, Karen

Hi Very impressed, would you ever consider doing a video tutorial for grooming and clipping her? Xxx
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 4 года назад
Hello Hayley, Thank you for your kind words. I'm so pleased you found the grooming video helpful. There are quite a few RU-vid video on cockapoo clipping, so I think it unlikely that I could add anything new. The main thing is to keep your dog clean and comfortable. Clipping your own dog can be fun and rewarding (and save money). It doesn't matter if you make a mistake, the hair will grow back, and practice will make nearly perfect. All the best, Karen

We will be getting a puppy (we are retired), but need a dog that we can travel with. We fell in love with the cockapoo but wonder if this breed would be able to fit in a carrier that would fit under an airline seat. We would be taking flights no longer that 2 hours four times a year. Would a cockapoo Dill's size qualify for this travel? Many thanks- we love and appreciate the work you are doing!
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 4 года назад
Hello Nancy, You must be really excited about getting a new puppy to share your lives. The seats in airplanes aren't that generous for humans, but I imagine the amount of space under them is even less than generous. I really can't imagine a Cockapoo would be happy in a carrier under one, nor would a Cavapoo (Cavalier King Charles Spaniel x toy poodle). If you are a frequent flier, it might be an idea to ask your local vet about which breed might suit you best with this in mind. It would probably have to be a very small dog. Good luck, and enjoy your puppy when you get one.

Hello Taleeyah, Thank you for your message, and for watching our videos. It's great that you can share your cousin's cockapoos. They are such good fun to be around, and great to cuddle. I'm sure your parents thought very hard about the family and any puppy before deciding not to get one. Puppies do need lots of time with training, walks and play, and they can be expensive to keep when you include food, grooming and clipping costs, general health care and vet's bills. It's better not to have a puppy, than to have one that won't be happy, as that upsets the whole family. Enjoy Rylie and Roy, and thanks again for writing. Kind regards, Karen

Hi,my Cockapoo Rex is 10 weeks old,a very quick learner and great with children. May I ask what you spray on your dog at end of grooming,take care...
@svsfilm

We don't recommend any particular brand of grooming spray. There are normally several brands in most major pet shops, or, if in doubt, get your vet to recommend something. Thank you for watching our videos.

When you say that you groom Dill every day, is it the level of grooming you show here or something a little more "quick and dirty"? She's beautifully behaved by the way and a real credit to your training of her.
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 4 года назад
I do tend to groom Dill every day, but it takes less time when her coat is shorter. Really it is down to the need of the dog: curly coat takes longer than a smooth coat, long hair more time than short hair, a mucky dog more effort than a cleaner dog. Ear cleaning depends on the amount of wax, amount of hair etc. Teeth depend on the level of tartar build up. That said, all dogs, both short and long haired should be inspected regularly and brushed at least once a week looking for any problems with skin, ticks and such like. Hope this helps. Kindest regards, Karen

Hello Angela, Congratulations on your new house member. No doubt you'll have years of fun and laughter with Ted. I don't recommend any particular brand of ear cleaner. There are generic blends in most major pet shops, or, if in doubt, get your vet to recommend something. Always be on the lookout for smelly ears, or inflammation, or the pup scratching his ears as they can be prone to picking up seeds in their ears etc. Have fun, and thanks for asking the question. Kindest Regards, Karen

Hello, my poo is 10 weeks old and he hates being brushed. How did Dill cope at the beginning? ❤️
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 4 года назад
Hello Franco, It's not unusual for puppies to object to being brushed, that's why I always recommend starting on day one. Don't worry too much that your little one is being a bit difficult at the moment, he will be fine. Wait until he is very tired, then pop him on your lap and start to stroke him, and run your hands across his body, especially his legs and feet. If he tries to nibble you, just say No gently and start again. Once he's relaxed start stroking him with the brush. Don't spend long, just a couple of minutes, followed by lots of praise and a treat. What we're doing here is turning grooming into attention for your puppy - he'll like that. Only when he is comfortable do you start grooming for longer - I promise you he will get used to it. Don't worry about teeth cleaning until he tolerates body/leg grooming. If he has a curly coat, take him to the groomers at about 4-5 months just to have a puppy trim - that'll help him get used to being bathed and they will make sure the hair around his eyes are trimmed. I can understand your concern, but don't worry, he will start to enjoy it all. Dill is so used to it, that she tends to go to sleep while I'm grooming her.

Hello Sarah, I make it a practice not to recommend any particular products because I couldn’t be sure it would be right for every dog that’s owner followed that recommendation. The type of coat your dog has, any sensitivities or allergies it may have, its age, size and condition should all be taken into consideration, and your veterinary surgeon is best placed to give advice in this area. I hope this helps. Kindest Regards, Karen

How often to do this please?
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 3 года назад
Hello there, I have always handled and gently brushed every new puppy daily from the moment it arrives. This is only a very gentle process that the puppy learns to relax and enjoy. The puppy coat is soft and doesn't generally present much of a problem, but getting it used to grooming will pay off in spades. As an adult, at the very least it's a good idea to check your dog over every day, just to make sure it doesn't have ticks, grass seed in its paws / ears / eyes, or any scratches or cuts. All dogs need grooming to maintain the condition of their skin, but the frequency depends a lot of the coat of your dog. A short-haired dog might only need a brush through every few days, but a dog with long or curly hair will need more grooming in order to avoid knots in the coat as these can be uncomfortable and even cause health concerns if left. I clip Dill's coat on her body, and use scissors on her head, legs and tail. She is inspected (especially ears, eyes, pads and bottom) every day, and given a comb through most days (though I might leave it on the odd day straight after a clip), and generally a thorough groom taking about 30 minutes every other day. Her eyes are wiped with previously boiled water as necessary, her ear flap cleaned every 3 to 4 days as she does get them dirty, her teeth cleaned weekly - though I admit I'm a bit lax on that front. Really, it is all about your dog's health and comfort, but with the very big spin-off benefit that it builds a strong bond between you and your dog. Hope this helps. Kindest Regards, Karen

I find this a bit misleading. Most cockapoos are not as calm as Dill.
@svsfilm
@svsfilm 4 года назад
Hello Richard, I promise you Dill is just the same as most cockapoos. They do tend to have a friendly disposition, but just like all the others she is full of energy, loves cavorting around and playing chase. However, she has been handled and groomed from the day I got her. Initially it was just running my hands all over her, especially over her legs, feet and tail as this can be an issue with some dogs. A soft brush and wide toothed comb has kept her tangle free, so grooming is not uncomfortable for her. If knots occur they can cause the dog considerable discomfort when grooming - she's never experienced this. I promise you, I've owned dogs of different breeds for many years, and even a rescue Schnauzer that had not been groomed properly so had totally knotted hair on her legs (we cut all the knots out without attempting to untangle them) became relaxed when she realised grooming could be a pleasant experience. Just persevere. Be kind, take your time, and any dog will tolerate and even enjoy the attention.
