Happy for you. Hand-fed or hand-raised cockatiels will generally be more friendly and sociable than aviary cockatiels that are bred and raised for display.

I bought a 2-month-old cockatiel but she wasn't a hand-fed one. She is tamed by me but not enough. I had thought it would be enough. You should not buy younger. There is more risk of death. If you buy a mature, untamed bird, it is very very hard to tame.

Birds must have a bracelet of the breeder. Look for a qualified breeder. You may also look into adopting a bird from a shelter or rescue organization. Friendly cockatiels are often given up to rescue organizations because their first owners bought them on a whim without realizing how much work a cockatiel is.

Cockatiels may be mature and/or may have hand trauma. You should place your cockatiel's cage close to the family in a living room. Talk to him frequently in a low, calming voice to help the bird get used to you. Body movements must be slow around the birds too. You can put millet spray in your hand and make the bird eat from your hand in the cage when he is a little bit hungry. Try again and again. Do not push. There is also curtain method. Experts tame their birds by saving them from net curtains by their fingers. No grasping in the hand.
