Unfortunately my girl doesn’t like baths. She will get in water but she only washes her beak and chest. If I want her to have a clean butt I have to towel her and wash it. 🤢
@@ananonymoushen4339 The reason they do that is very instinctual. When birds get wet, they get heavy and it becomes more difficult to fly away from predators. Even worse, if they get their wings/tail wet enough, they won't be able to fly very well, making them quite vulnerable to attacks. That's why my girl takes every single precaution to avoid getting her wings and her tail wet when she bathes in my hand. She mainly just wets her chest and the back of her neck.
@@theangrycheeto I thought birds preen oil helps keep their feathers from getting waterlogged? I've never noticed my tiel having trouble flying when wet, and he likes to flap his wings around underneath the kitchen faucet when he takes a shower. He doesnt let himself get too soaked though, I can imagine if his wings were to get _completely_ saturated that would probably make it pretty hard to fly.
@@Cammibird1 Unfortunately, I don't have the time right now to pull out scientific studies in the literature. But of course, parrots are not waterbirds. They diligently groom and oil their feathers with their preen gland, leaving their feathers water *resistant*. But if you run their flight feathers under warm water for a period of time, they will saturate and they won't be able to fly very well. It might not be noticeable in a casual setting when they're flying from the couch to their cage but it can be the difference between life and death for them. Personally, my conure rarely ever flies after a bath and even then she won't fly further than an arms length and she won't be happy about it. You may notice that if you shower too often/too long, it may leave your skin dry, as you've washed the natural oils away. I used to take her into the shower with me when she was a youngin and she would get completely soaked and she would literally regress into a baby. Just completely quiet, still and dependant on me. I'd have to towel burrito her, and then blow dry her til she was independent again. (don't do this, you almost can't be sure your blow dryer doesn't have PTFE and/or nonstick coatings).
They aren't. This video is cute but parrots, parakeets, cockatiels, and similar birds are exotics and incredibly high maintenance. They're messy, destructive, loud, and so needy if you give them 1 second of attention too little they'll become depressed, with a diet so specific an ounce of the wrong food will give them debilitating nutrient deficiencies. Cockatiels specifically tend to live up to 25 years if kept healthy but few owners can get them older than six due to them dying from unintentional neglect, they're a lifelong commitment. Parrots can live up to sixty years. Not to mention the amount of poaching done to get exotics, a large amount of these birds that end up in circulation are stolen from the wild doing significant damage to their already dwindling ecosystems. Not saying it's impossible but frankly they are so difficult to keep humanely nobody but licensed wildlife rehabbers and the like should be trusted to have them. Definitely not a first-time pet.
My uncle is TERRIFIED of birds, but it's bc he was attacked by an owl when he was 7 so you know, I'll give him a pass on that. Sadly, my parakeet loved sitting on his head! My parakeet also didn't realize that he couldn't just do that without making my uncle cry!

@@fruitycoconut well I don't understand myself but it even has a medical name for the phobia. But, since I'm an animal lover and spend time outside gardening, I get all sorts of "visitors " from birds, squirrels, iguanas and even big water birds like storks. There are neighbors...that I really don't like blaming all the time...but they hate everything. They've killed animals as well. They think that they shouldn't be around and attract other animals. The only thing they will attract is a gator. Since they don't have the poor critters in water to feed on, they will come out and I really hope they go straight to my neighbors door. Should never mess with wildlife. And it's just stupid.
@@dustpotatolychee I dunno if the chemistry is bird-safe, but they make pump action garden misters. You pump them up like a super soaker, then hold squeeze to release a fine mist.
Oh my God this just melts my heart she is in heaven right now I just love videos like this thank you for sharing with us it makes me feel so grateful to have a bird like this we are lucky to have animals like this in our life
I wish I could have a birb. Some in my household are deathly allergic, unfortunately.:( Once when he was younger and in school, a kid brought his bird for show-and-tell. He'd already taken the bird back out of the room after only have him in his cage for like five minutes in there. Even a couple hours later, my husband ended up with a horrible asthma attack and needing an ER visit. You guys seriously are super lucky. Having a bird has been one of my life goals....
@@ElysetheEevee I am so sorry you you're not able to experience a cockatiel they are absolutely amazing little creatures but there is a way it might take a little more work but you can do it if you were to have an outdoor aviary or have a place or a room where you could seal it off from the rest of the house and have air filtration systems in there that filter out the dander which would trigger his asthma attacks. I hope your husband feels better I'm so sorry that he had to go through that. Or you can buy one and have it at your friend's house or your mom or dad's house and go visit it when you'd like I don't know I'm just brainstorming I'm trying to help you out because having a cockatiel is just an amazing experience it really is there's such awesome little creatures I love mine so much it breaks out of the cage asleep with me just about every night I wake up next to a poof ball next to my face I love my bird
