Last night we got a phone call and an email from a very good friend of ours in the bird community. Two cockatoos were in need of emergency rescue after their guardian passed away, leaving them in less-than-desirable conditions. Their guardian had dedicated his whole entire life to the birds, but overtime, it became a little more than he could handle. He was not only a lover of birds but I lover of all animals. He had opened his home to the local raccoons, skunks, and other wildlife, and unfortunately, they had a devastating impact on the quality of the house and the condition. Because of the situation, we knew that we needed to help with these birds right away. We contacted several other organizations nobody else could help step up, and that’s when we decided we had no other option but to help these boys. The late guardian's daughter met me at the home, even though she is grieving the loss of her father, and we loaded the birds into my car and off to the sanctuary, we went for assessments and quarantine.
You can tell that these birds loved their guardian and that the guardian loved them. But sometimes, especially as empathetic human companions to animals, sometimes our good intentions become overwhelming and this is a great example of that. The late guardian’s daughter has been absolutely wonderful as she grieves the loss of her dad and also endures the heartbreak of the devastation he left behind. her number one concern was making sure that her dad's soulmates, these birds, found appropriate placement in their time of desperate need.
We could tell that there was a group of raccoons (and other wildlife)that had been living in the house because of the foot prints that were fresh and immediate odor.
The birds are now here, safe and in a clean environment with an air purifier going, and they are absolutely lovely. They are heartbroken and grieving the loss of their companion, but they are good birds who deserve everything.
Ramsey is estimated at 30 years old and he is missing a lot of his feathers due to stress
Fred is an older gentleman at an estimated 60 years old and has an old wing injury that looks to be fused
Our organization will not be taking on any of the financial aspects of this Rescue. The parrot community has reached out to offer assistance, as well as the former guardian's daughter.
We have appointments scheduled for both birds on Thursday and will be taking our time to get them mentally, emotionally and physically stable before finding permanent placement for them
As always, this is a community effort, and we couldn’t do this without the support near and far
Yes, we are overwhelmed right now, but we truly believe that we were meant to be the friends that help liberate these birds and help mend the family left in the wreckage and the loss of their loved one.
We hold no judgment, just open hearts to help heal and support❤️
