I have yet to see anyone mention this so here: Dante is a breed called Xoloitzcuintle. The Aztecs believed that they're the guardians of their master's souls in the afterlife. They're considered spiritual dogs that will lead and protect their owners during their journeys through the underworld.
Dogs were thought to guide people's souls to the afterlife. That's why Dante, even before he becomes an Alebrije, can see the dead and is able to physically cross over to the Underworld.
@@captainteeko4579 Not really. In the movie yes, Pepita resembles a jaguar, but she is an Alebrije, cool looking Mexican Folk Art made from paper mache.
Being Hispanic with aztec/Mexican ancestry, this film KILLED ME. The amount of cultural aspects they got spot on is incredible. My grandmother is 93 and while she doesn’t have Alzheimer’s, this movie made me realize how much I’m going to miss her when she passes. She even told me she wants me to put a beer and some pan dulce (Mexican sweet bread) on her place on our ofrenda or she’d haunt me🤣 my bday is nov. 1st which is the start of dia de Los muertos so it’s hits me hard every year 🤧❤️🔥 great reaction :) glad u liked it and I’m glad Disney was able to share a bit of our culture with others like u :)
Happy late birthday! I've been seeing tons of people talk about how they did a great job including the culture and in general I absolutely love the idea of dia de los muertos; it's beautiful. My grandmother passed a couple years ago and it still crushes me, miss her every day; spend as much time with her as you can! :)
Thank you for watching this, many people skip over this film because they assume they won’t like it or don’t relate to the culture, but this is a beautiful movie. There are so many messages that are relatable and I’m glad you thought of your grandmother while watching this.
Honestly it's very easy to relate to the culture for us and the overall message of the importance of family since it's something we both value a lot; beautiful movie and messages presented in it!
Fun fact: in China the censors are very restrictive concerning content that is contrary to the Communist Party principles e.g., ghosts, afterlife, superstition. Coco was allowed to show in China because of the strong message of remembering and honoring one's ancestors.
I will say, i skipped over it for that reason. My 13 year old daughter put it on for my 2 year old one day and my eyes never left the screen. Its beautiful and spot on. My little girl has to watch it at least once a day, and im cool with that lol.
I was definitely one of those people who stubbornly refused to watch it. When I finally got around to it, it became my favourite Disney movie next to ratatouille and lion king
Coco had Alzheimer’s. That’s why she was forgetting her father. They alluded to it at the beginning when she called Miguel ‘Julio’ and asked her own daughter “who are you?”. Then when Miguel came in at the end she was non responsive. Many times people who suffer from Alzheimer’s will stare into space and not reply when spoken to. I have family that suffer from this and as soon as Coco called Miguel by a different name, I knew what that meant and I cried! It was so familiar and just hit home hard. I love how they showed how powerful music is. It’s actually recommended to play music to Alzheimer’s patients to help them remember and stay lucid. This movie just made me ball! 🥺😢
My paternal grandmother had alzheimer and I was 12 when she had forgotten us. It was so difficult for me to see her like that (when I was a little girl, she hust forgotten what she said before) than I asked to my parents if I could waiting in the car. It was the last time I saw her. She was a vegetable when she died. I remember seeing a video about an old lady with alzheimer who was a ballerina who remember her choregraphy of " The swan's lake " after hearing the music
A study after this film came out hints that music can help mildly restore memories of people suffering from Alzheimer's. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6022981/
@@timothyswanson8773 I think because music is stored in a different part of the brain. Music, smells, some stuff just hits a different part of your brain and unlocks different memories more effectively, memories you don't even remember that you remember. Cheap Avon perfume that makes you think of grandma's living room in a house you haven't even seen in like 40 years. There's also a study that music can help people with Parkinson's. Their movements are really jerky and unsteady when they try to walk or hold a spoon, or what have you. But when they turn on music, the patient dances just like they did before they developed the condition. Music is almost as fascinating as the brain itself.
I watched this movie for the first time with my niece at home and let me tell you….. when mama coco started singing with Miguel…the tears were flowing. And my niece told me to stop crying and threw a blanket over my head
@@OctoKrool same. Doesn’t help that Mama Coco looks so very much like my own grandmother who passed away at 99 last year, but she was still alive when this came out. Other than the hair, I would swear they used photos of her as a reference for Coco. The face, the stature, the sound of her voice… it always gets me.
Something I only noticed on a rewatch: When Ernesto starts to give his blessing for Miguel's return, the marigold petal is not lit - a clue that he was not Miguel's ancestor. It was lit up like a lightbulb when Imelda gave her blessing earlier.
Yeah, and when Hector has been included in the altar's pics his skeleton is no longer barefoot. His family took him back on both sides and he got shoes as a symbol of that since they're shoemakers.
You two stanning Dante throughout the entire film was adorable. Also don't feel bad, literally everybody cried buckets, and those who say they didn't are liars.
For those who never try it, chorizo it's one of the most delicious meals in the world..... Fried chorizo with fried eggs and some chips.....that's mana from the gods.......
The message of the song " Remember Me" has such a double meaning here, the scene where they sing it together always brings tears of joy to my eyes. It's okay if it "almost" brings you to tears, you'd have to be made of stone not to. What a beautiful movie....love Nightmare Before Christmas as well!
@@ayuwoki428I would never, ever want to meet you in real life then, anyone who can't get even a little misty at the end of this movie is indubitably dead inside. I pity you
I love this movie. This year, I'm celebrating Dia de Muertos for the first time and it's so special and bittersweet. Thanks for checking this one out, you guys rock!
My boyfriend and I are making an ofrenda this year. We both lost our partners a few years before we got together, so this way we keep them part of the family. ❤️ ❤️
I was openly sobbing in the theatre while watching the scene at the end with Mama Coco and Miguel. As a Mexican woman, it hit home so hard with how my family is: Prideful, unforgiving/ostracizing, misunderstanding at times, wanting what's best for you, when it could more be what they want and are accustomed to, and not what you truly believe is best for you. I had lost several family members very recently and my grandpa began forgetting 70% of things. Even still, they are my family and I love them dearly. My fiance, who is Chinese, ended up a crying mess as well. He said it hit home for him too, especially with the themes of remembering our elderly and taking care of them, as in Chinese culture, grandparents are a HUGE part of the family unit. I later found out that the movie did extraordinarily well in China, which hadn't happened with Pixar or Disney movies in a long while. Many Chinese families and individuals felt like Coco represented their culture and family bonds.
I think that's why this film resonated with me so much as well, I had such a strong and close relationship with my grandparents; even living with my grandmother for many years. I also agree that our families definitely have flaws, but at the end of the day we love them; Coco is just a beautiful movie and I appreciate comments like this!
Watching this with my daughters for the first time the other day I realized “for nearly a century Coco remembered him and never forgot him even after her mother and family members thought he just abandoned them. She remembered his song and his promise until they were in each others arms again
I been watching this movie all week long🥺💔 I've had a recent death in my family of someone I dearly loved. This movie makes me feel like I will see him again and that I can connect and communicate with him😖🥺💔I love Coco💞 and when her father sung to her when she was little🥰 it breaks me down every time🥺🥺
A detail that I missed the first time I saw this. They give you a hint that Hector is his great, great Grandpa early on. Hector has a gold tooth in the same position as the guitar, but on the opposite side. I love seeing this movie over and over. I see new things every time. Although there are parts that I never see clearly, seeing as my vision still goes blurry, also every time.
Coco is not only my most favorite Pixar movie but I think it is the best animated movie ever. BTW. I was crying like a baby watching it. And I don't know how many Pixar movies have you seen but I recommend Soul (2020) movie too.
If you want an amazing foreign film (Spanish with English subtitles), "Pan's Labyrinth" is a dark fairy-tale, set in the aftermath of the Spanish civil war and during World War 2. Don't let the "fairy-tale" part mislead you. It has several ultra-violent torture scenes, so you've been warned. Guillermo Del Toro is the director of this one and it won 3 Academy Awards and numerous other awards as well. A must-see!
Great reaction, thanks! Just to add, the cat at the end is Pepita. Just as Dante takes a normal dog form in the living world, Pepita takes the form of a house cat - in life, she was Mama Imelda's pet cat. Both are spirit guides to the family, thus both come to celebrate.
I don’t know how you guys held back your tears but next time just cry it out! It’s okay! This movie was sooo beautiful. And Dante was really his spirit guide from the very beginning. If it wasn’t for Dante knocking the table down Miguel would’ve never noticed the guitar in the photo. When he transported to the spirit world Dante led him to his family. When Miguel was running away from his family and Hector after the talent show, Dante tried to pull him back to them. There’s so many beautiful things that you catch the more you watch it. It’s amazing.
The place Miguel gets thrown into is called a cenote. They are naturally occurring sinkholes that form in limestone then fill with ground and rain water. They were a main water source for the Maya people since they had no rivers. They technically exist all over the world but are an important part of ancient Mexican cultures. I think I remember a NatGeo documentary saying the Mayas believed they were entires into the underworld, even if that is not the case they were heavily tied to their spiritual beliefs. I thought it was a super cool detail to add to Coco.
In the Mexican culture there are 3 deaths. The first is when you actually die. The second is when the body is hidden, no longer in sight (burial, cremation, etc). The third death is when there is no one left alive that remembers you.
To me its proof that We're all spirits in bodies speratedd only by names and titles that we give ourselves. Ancients mostly understood that the flesh is merely an Avatar for something eternal but yea on a lighter note its super dope that in times like these where were seemingly so seperate we can find connections resonating throughout.
The way yu see the graveyards decorated is in NO WAY exagerated, they truly are decorated to that extent Edit: if not more decorated if im being honest lol
The amazing thing about this is that dementia sufferers REALLY CAN see recovery like that when listening to music from their youth. There are documentaries about it on YT - patients who spend their days closed in, hunched over, unmoving, barely making a sound. They slip some headphones on them and play music from when they were young, and they just *freaking blossom*. Their posture opens out, they tap and hum along, they start holding conversations, their memory improves - it even lasts a while after the music stops. It's incredible, and totally worth seeing.
Such an incredibly beautiful movie. I absolutely love it (hence my avatar) lol This movie gets me every time. Coco won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and it absolutely deserved it! So cool you brothers got to experience it together. Thank you for watching it.
This movie broke me ... The thought of dying and people not being alive thinking about you at all basically makes it like you never existed. As long as your memory is alive in someone, you are still here... As soon as that stops, you vanish forever.
This is such a beautiful movie. Legitimately one of my favourites Also love the El Santo cameo at the entrance of the party. He was the most famous Luchadore in all of Mexico. Had movies and comics made of him, he was basically superman.
I am so happy to hear that you have been blessed with great parents, and that you are so open in your respect and love for them. Both of my parents have always been strong, loving supportive people, and I try to make sure they know this is how I feel, whenever I have the chance. They are such wonderful people that have been, second parents to many of my friends.
I second this request, I am not religious but it is a great move, along side all the other movies such as ben hur, 10 comandments, barrabas, they are also great.
It's even sadder when you realize that Hector's family thought he just never returned and abandoned his family, but he was actually murdered and Coco grew up, married, had kids and grandkids and is now dying and no one ever knew that he WAS coming home, he just didn't get to.
Definitely Should Watch “Sister Act” Great Movie! Whoopi Will Have You laughing the Whole time!! (Side note: I was the one who requested “lean on Me” so you know i won’t steer you wrong in the #GoodMovie department)
This movie as well as Wall-E and Up bring me to tears everytime I watch them! Disney and Pixar have been doing a lot of work to produce movies that hit you in the feels since they partnered up and even movies like Moana, Frozen and Tangled hit some pretty emotional beats that I personally can't deny.
"Maybe that's what Dante is. He's a spirit creature." Alebrijes are a type of Mexican folk art where they make brightly colored sculptures of fantastical creatures... and if you notice, the first shot of Dante is him popping out of a trash can right next to a table full of them.
I like to think that the size/intensity/strength of the alebríje corresponds with the strength of the soul it guides! Mama Imelda’s spirit creature is HUUUUGE and imposing, much like her personality! But Ernesto’s are teeny lil chihuahuas… 😂
When I saw you reacted to this I thought oh oh, this movie is going to pull your heart strings. The first time I saw it I was mesmerized, the colors, the characters, the music. "Remember me" was in my head for days. Thank you guys for this great reaction!
Coco is definitely top tier. that scene with Mama Coco also reminds me of my grandmother so I feel you on that one. btw, Dante was an alebrije, a spirit guide. you guys should check out Soul next if you want to do more animated movies. I think you would love that one as well.
Animated movie: Prince of Egypt, Rise of the Guardians and How to Train Your Dragon. Not even for the reaction video, just to make sure you have seen them at least once. Glad you have loving parents that encourage your dreams.
I first watched this movie in Spanish class not long after my own grandma passed. My professor just stared at me for a minute because I was openly weeping at my desk. It still hits so hard.
This is my first time discovering your reactions and I love how genuine and excited y’all are! You let the emotions affect you unlike some reactors and that, to me, is what makes for the best and most authentic reaction! Keep up the amazing work and I can’t wait to watch more reactions!
This movie made me smile ear to ear with eyes full of tears absolutely felt every message watching as an adult with what if’s and maybes. I love this movie
Omg yes! Great choice in choosing this film, especially for day of the dead...A+ for both of you guys. This movie is indeed beautiful in so many ways makes me very proud of our mexican heritage and this beautiful tradition. Glad you guys enjoyed it as much as I did. Like you guys said, this movie is very relatable and really knows how to get to you. Makes you appreciate life and your loved ones even more. HAPPY DAY OF THE DEAD! 💀
First animated movie reaction and it’s Coco!!! One of Pixar’s bests and my personal fave. Thank you so much. Can’t wait to see what movies you’re gonna do next 🤩💕
My favorite Disney movie is "Brother bear". Its about brothers. I think you'll like it! This is my favorite Pixar movie. The "Remember me" song hits different, now you realize Hector has to hear that song all his life. Shared by the world. While it was a song between him and his little girl.. My heart.
The awesome thing about this movie is that although it is based on Mexican culture and tradition, it is relatable to everyone. I lost my grandmother the year I watched this movie, so best believe I balled my eyes out. Lol. Also, while Dante is a cute dog in the movie, the Xolo breed in real life is beautiful. Btw, it cracks me up how excited you guys get over food in the movies you react to.
I love this movie. I really couldn't stop crying after its revealed that remember me it's not a love song in the sense it's shown in the beginning. It's a sweet lullaby for his daughter. I lost it after that
I noticed that after the movie, remembering the scene where Miguel is trying to run away from him and Dante keeps barking to have him comeback; it's a nice little touch!
As soon as I found out the date I had this planned for a while, I honestly didn't know much about Dia de los muertos but I've heard of it and after seeing it presented in this movie I think it's a beautiful day and something I truly would love to celebrate! :)
It took me a few watches of this movie to realize that when the scene shows the land of the dead city, you can see skulls within them. It's too easy to miss, but if you pause it, you can see it. :)
The hairless dog Dante is a Xolo(Xoloitzcuintli). In Mesoamerican times they were considered too help guide the recently deceased through the underworld which is why Xolos were buried with their owners.
This was a great reaction. It’s nice you watched or released the video on Dia De Los Muertos too. This movie portrayed the Mexican culture very accurately. It’s message about family, support, and remembering loved ones who have passed seem universal and shared among all people who watch it. I’m glad you both chose to watch it and the movie gets recognition. Not too many choose to react to it despite it winning an Oscar award. It definitely is a movie to watch with family and friends. Maybe I’ll suggest this movie during the upcoming Thanksgiving.
Out of the songs in this movie, my favorite is "Un Poco Loco", which translates to "A little crazy". I love how they animated this movie and wrote the songs, on top of honoring Mexican culture and customs. (Despite me DESPISING Ernesto De La Cruz, even before learning of his villainous nature). It's *IMPOSSIBLE* to avoid crying while Miguel is singing "Remember Me" with Mamá Coco. Being Mexican-American, what makes this movie so special to me is the concept of family. On my family's ofrenda, one of the pictures we put up is of my paternal grandfather Marcelino. He died when I was in 8th grade (2005) and even now in 2023, going into 2024, it messes me up with emotion. Every day, I wish I could see him face-to-face one last time, give him a big hug and tell him how much I love and miss him. 😢😢😢😢
I always considered this my "dude movie" reaction channel, kinda nice to see something different from you guys. You two always make me laugh, love the channel.
I never thought to watch Goofy Movie. But since you guys recommended, I’m gonna give it a try. I enjoyed you guys watching Coco. I’ve seen almost every reaction and y’all are the most natural and enjoyable. You guys didn’t drop tears but I could see the sadness through your eyes. You were crying from your heart. And just enjoying Dante was so cute. A new subscriber here from now on.
Lol i knew you would watch it, the thing about Dante being able to go to the land of the dead, we believe that animals can see the dead in general but this breed of dog that is Dante, the xoloitzcuintle (or xolo for short) were believed to being able to guide the spirits of the dead to the land of the dead (Mictlán) by the Aztecs. By the way the thing about choking on chorizo is an adult joke with double meaning, for those who don´t know, chorizo is a type of sausage 🤣greetings from México!
I don't think that the point of "family doesn't support his dreams" was the point of the plot as much as Miguel realizing it that he cannot fulfill his dreams at any cost, passing over his family. It's not like the classical Disney movie in which the parents always have a change of heart by the end, I think this is more like, hey, both sides learn meaningful lessons. Miguel was really walking the same steps Ernesto did, almost becoming a bastard himself when he believed that family doesn't matter as long as he could become a musician. By the way, in Mexico we believe there's three times that you die: First death is when life leaves your body. Second death is when someone sees you or your body for the las time. Third and final death is when you are completely forgotten. Great reaction, loved it.
I love when dantechanges into the spirit give and gets his colors. The part where coco sings the song always brings me tears, because that's the only dialog coco had and it ment so much.love this movie its so deep. Love it.
If you look at it, Dante started his journey by knocking off the picture to begin with. Then guides him through his journey. Every time Miguel listens to Dante things go well, every time he does what he thinks De La Cruz would do, things go badly. There's sooo much foreshadowing in the film that you really have to see it two or three times to pick it all up.
Wow guys, just wow...I mean you had me with a tear in my eye with what you said after the video. That was deep and amazing and you guys are great and yes live your dreams-I agree, bless up
That's not dumb. My kids are half Mexican and they love this movie. I'm not latino but lived in LA when I met their mom and this movie is very respectful to the culture.
A luthier made a real-life version of the guitar, and it's featured in one of the Blu-Ray extra features. It's more beautiful than you could imagine from the animated rendition. The underground pool into which Miguel and Hector were thrown is called a _cenote_ and they're a natural phenomenon that the ancient peoples of Mexico believed were entrances to the Underworld. In my city, we have a below-ground bar called Cenote, which serves Mexican food; it's kind of awesome. Good idea to release this reaction on the Dia de Muertos, too, by the way.
Y'all had to crush my soul again with Coco. Also I half expected you to say "were going to be doing a lot of new things this month, I think we're going to be dabbling in DARK MAGIC" for some reason and I was like "aight bet"
I just watched this movie yesterday and it was so amazing! And im glad that looking up reactions has led me here. I loved this reaction and I’m gonna go see some of your other ones now! Also I would love to suggest watching Encanto, I think you guys will enjoy it ALOT
really nice choice for your first reaction to an animated film especially on día de los muertos. hope we'll see more animated film reactions in the future. A goofy movie is one my favorites also never get tired of it.
