Coco had Alzheimer’s / Dementia. It’s why she kept getting names wrong and and why she was staring off into space when Miguel was trying to talk to her at the end. I’ve had family who suffer with this and it’s hard to watch. One of my aunts has it and she doesn’t know who her daughters are, and thinks her sister is her mother. Very sad. They get very confused. When Miguel started to play the song and Coco reacted to it, I lost it! 😭😭😭 Music really is powerful.

I just noticed seconds before Miguel meets Dante the dog, behind him was a Alebrijes sign and they are brightly colored Mexican art culptures of fantastical creatures. And I read that an alebrije of a dog means protection, a guardian that helps the soul during transition. Big foreshadowing. And also Dante was modeled after Mexico's national dog, the Xoloitzcuintli.

There is so much greatness to this movie. From Miguel saying he'll get on the stage or die trying and then metaphorically dying when he falls in the grave, to all the foreshadowing that Dante is a spirit guide. Just one example, Miguel's journey of discovery started because Dante knocked down the photo from the the ofrenda. Even the little details, like Hector finally having shoes to wear once he's reintegrated into the family, are so easy to miss, but add so much depth.

Actually no one lied. No one used *names*. Abuelita called him "that man", and Imelda said "my husband". Miguel ASSUMED it was Ernesto because of the guitar (which he stole from Hector's dead corpse), but NO ONE EVER SAID that.

The lil dude who voiced Miguel was actually supposed to be a temp. He used to seeing mariachi music and they were using him as a standing until they finish casting. But he was doing so well that they decided to take him on permanently. There’s a video on Disney about it.

It's sad that Nana Coco is based on an actual real person, and Disney used her likeness without giving her or the family any recognition or credit.

I honestly really loved Coco and it’s inclusion of the different cultures of Mexico like the different regional music, and clothes with its main cultural influence being Day of the Dead which Is celebrated in the central/southern states of Mexico in indigenous communities. The one thing I was really disappointed was that there wasn’t an inclusion of an indigenous language since this holiday is an indigenous holiday and could’ve given the movie a little more flavor. I also love the inclusion of alebrijes which don’t have anything to do with Day of the Dead but are folk art produced by indigenous people in Oaxaca that are made out of copal wood and out of paper in Mexico City which is its birth place. The idea of having a photo on the alter also isn’t much of problem since the belief is that the souls will cross regardless. Plus the indigenous people that celebrated this holiday in pre Hispanic times didn’t have cameras and would make “alters” on the ground with offerings.

i think the daughter looks older than the mom because its based on the time they died...like the age they were if that makes sense? idk

I can't help but think of when Chloe was crying about the ending of this movie and Halle laughing about it 😭😭😭

Something that I just learned (thank you TikTok lol) is that the actress who plays Lexi and Cassie's mom Suze, in Euphoria actually voiced the character of Mama Imelda!
