Yes, SHAME! I absolutely shame myself for not having seen this movie. It is adorable, heartfelt, and just so catchy! I've had Remember Me stuck in my head since we watched it the other day! I didn't know much about Dia De Los Muertos before, and I definitely have a new appreciation for it, and the idea that your loved ones live on as long as we remember them. It's a beautiful sentiment, and this will definitely become a go-to feel good movie for me. Pixar never lets you down. Enjoy! ❤️Jacqui

FYI since I know Pixar and Disney do research I'm sure it is not a coincidence that the town is named Santa Cecilia and Saint Cecilia is the patron saint of music. I know because I went to Saint Cecilia's elementary and high school.

I will say that I am Mexican on my father's side and my grandmother that just had her 98th birthday still has a shrine of my grandfather in the living room pours a shot of tequila for him on Dia de Los Muertos made me happy that all the Disney companies are keeping to their word of being diverse and inclusive of all cultures.

The masked wrestler (luchador) who the guard takes a selfie with by removing his head is El Santo. He was HUGE IN Mexican Wrestling. There are still family members of his that wrestle. I listened to the bluray's commentary track and had to laugh because when I saw Frieda Kahlo I remember thinking Frieda was a painter not a performance artist but hey, she's dead so she'd have a lot of time on her hands so maybe she took up performance art and then 5 minutes later in the commentary I hear the film makers say - Freida was a painter but we thought, she's dead so she'd have a lot of time on her hands so maybe she'd expand her horizons and do performance art..

That dog is a breed of Mexican dog called Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo for short) dating back to the Mayan culture 3000 + years ago. The name is from the Mayan Nahuatl language, combining "Xolotl" (god of fire and lightning) and "itzcuintli" (dog). They were sometimes killed when their owner died so they could guide their owner to the afterlife. They occur in different sizes and like Chihuahuas the hairless variety is genetically dominant and also causes missing teeth. Haired individuals occur in most litters and have a complete set of teeth.

No actually the Xolo dog and Nahuatl language is of Aztec origins. The Aztecs believed the Xolo dog would guide the souls of the deceased to Mictlan the final resting place of the soul. Also the Xolo dog breed has another mythological tie, the Xolo dog looks exactly like the Egyptian God of the underworld Anubis. If you get a photo of Anubis and compare to a black Xolo dog the resemblance is eerie.

Frida Kahlo was a 20th century painter who was devoted to Mexican cultural heritage. The paper banners at the beginning and end are papel picados, common Dia de los Muertos decorations, with skull designs common. Skull-shaped sugar candy and bone-shaped sugary bread are also created.

I was in Spanish club in high school and for our annual show a Mexican-American student gave me a tape of a song to learn. It was the song Mama Imelda sings here --"La Llorona" (The Weeping Woman) which is almost 100 years old, has variations in many Latin countries and is associated with the Day of the Dead in Mexico. Most versions are about a woman who is betrayed by her husband, drowns her children in anger and is condemned to roam the earth as a spirit.

A little detail I love is how through out the movie Hector is barefoot but when he crosses the bridge he has shoes on (made by his family no less) which means his family has accepted him. I just really loved the idea that they possibly put shoes on the ofrenda for Hector.

This movie does a really good job at explaining the culture surrounding día de los muertos. Basically the important part is the “altar” (shrine) which has different meanings in the levels it has. The general idea is to put a photo of the person being remembered, usually is the whole family three if we’re speaking of more humble families. Alongside the photo there is food displayed, usually the favorite food of the person in the altar. And the altar also includes other commemorative decorations. There’s also the cempazuchitl flower (the orange petals used in the movie for basically everything), this flower is supposed to light the way so the dead are guided to the ofrenda (offering) on the living realm. I don’t know what else to mention from this celebration but I hope this helps have a better appreciation of the movie. Sorry for my bad English as well lol. Greetings from Mexico :)

This film makes me bawl my eyes out at the end; It came out right as my own grandmother suffered from dementia for six years before she died. In her last days she didn't recognize anyone except for her sister anymore, but some memories still came back when she sung songs. apparently that part of Coco is true, people will often remember songs from their childhood even after all other memories have become hard to reach.

Considering I was born on day of the dead, Nov second, I would say the holiday is not about crying about your loved ones deaths, but be happy that they moved and remember them, even if their far away you can always have pictures, and make sure you hold them close to your heart even if they far apart from you

My grandma reminds me of Miguel’s grandma. She was so mean just like her.😂 but also full of love and spoiled us. But the way she spoke was in the same manner. Especially when she yells, “Apologize!” 😂 just like my grandma. And my Mama Lupe (my grandma’s mom) was born around the turn of the century and dressed (and acted) just like Mama Imelda. They were strong, independent Mexican women because they had no choice. Their husbands left or died young just like Hector. So this movie hits so close to home for me not just with the story line but in the mannerisms and tiny details the creators brought forth when it comes to the Mexican people. For example: 3:40 Mariachi when he says, “Not your life story.” 😂 4:21 When she throws her chancla. Every Mexica kid and dog has experienced the chancla. 5:00 when She says, “Ah kakaka. Shhh!” 11:15 Mama Imelda yelling “Ah ah ah!”

The chorizo (spicy sausage) joke was an albur (naughty double entendre). Many Mexicans joke around this way with friends, so it's typical they tease Hector for dying choking on chorizo.Since it's a cultural reference it usually flies over people's head, so I thought I'd point it out for your enjoyment/rewatch.

Love this movie. Always brings a tear to my eye. One sad thought I had after watching it is that Hector may end up alone again. Because of his music, he’s not going to be forgotten for a long,LONG time. Sure he may have descendants but eventually the generational divide will be too great. Meaning the only person he has any connection with will be De La Cruz, because they are tied together forever now.

Well I’d like to think that Miguel would grow to be a famous musician in his own right (maybe even more than Hector), as going by the ending his passion for music is as strong as it ever was. So perhaps Hector and Miguel would be able to last a good long while together when Miguel’s time comes.
@jacquelinecallejas1390
@jacquelinecallejas1390 Год назад
I don't think so. Since Miguel knows to honor his ancestors Hector and everybody between Hector and Miguel will still be on the ofrenda and Miguel will teach his kids. I think it will be OK.

For those who are interested the song Imelda sings called “La Llorona” which has been sung by many artists there is one version performed by a lady named Lila Downs that is absolutely amazing. Someone recommended it to me and although Spanish music isn’t my cup of tea, I’m more of a Megadeth and TOOL and a Perfect Circle listener but that version of “La Llorona” is on another level. You will know the video when you see Lila Downs wearing a Pink shawl of some kind. There is an older version from Lila Downs but the one I’m talking about is the most current version.

Ancient pagan cultures all over the world had festivals celebrating their ancestors, and often occurred in the fall. The Celts had Samhain (soh-ehn) around Nov 1 when the barrier between the world and the afterlife was weak and loved ones could return to earth; they had meals in their homes and left the door ajar for their ancestors to visit. In Egypt and Asia similar celebrations were in August. Hindus had a day in September. When Christianity spread to pagan countries they often adapted local pagan gods and holidays and equated them to Christian equivalents. Celtic Samhain became Christian All Saints Day and All Souls Day, and many Celtic customs survived as Halloween (All Hallows Eve). Mexico's Dia de los Muertos has some similarities to ancient Aztec celebrations but may be mostly developed from Christian customs.

Some of my earliest memories are from when I was 4 or 5 with my family at the apartment/house complex my Dads side of the family(he has 8 or 9 brothers and sisters all with multiple kids, the family needs an entire complex lol) has in Mexico attached to their small nuts and bolts factory( So for my family it was nuts, Bolts and small machined parts instead of shoes 😅). Its setup very much like Miguel's family business. I remember a central courtyard in the complex with this massive plum tree that had the best and sweetest plums in the center and a small room with a door and inside there was an ornate statue of La Virgen María surrounded by candles, and every year at Halloween time they decorate it with pictures of passed loved ones just like this movie. This movie made me cry SO HARD lol

The point of this movie and the Mexican tradition of dia de Los muertos is that family is only dead when you are forgotten. We keep them alive in our lives throughout the year and on their birth day and day of their passing. Through photos and memories we can keep them alive in our hearts and souls. Good review and that black shirt is fuego 🔥.

Hello The Shame List, This movie tells you that the Day of the Dead ( Dia de los muertos ) is not a copy or an offense, towards their Halloween culture, this tradition of Day of the Dead, is a pre-Hispanic tradition, which comes from long ago, the meaning of everything is, have an offering to the deceased person, with food or sweets that they liked as well as drinks, the photo to the deceased person or pet to whom you offer it, the orange flower or orange flower petals, they are called cempasuchil or cempazuchitl, which goes from the offering or altar, to the door of the house, like a path of petals where it comes and goes, and confetti as additional decoration. Another thing that the movie shows you, they are jaguar with wings and the dog with wings, they are Alebrijes, which represent the spiritual guide, the Alebrijes, they are animals that you want or imagine they could be, it can be a wolf with wings and lion claws, or a colored snake with a crocodile body, and according to the culture that will be your spiritual guide, when you die, he will guide you and accompany you. Finally, it only remains to tell you that each character that began to blink was because people or their family forgot, in a few words, one of the messages that this movie gives you is, They will continue to be alive as long as you remember them. And that is why we celebrate death, as you say, when in reality we remember them to live together as a family, and that the tradition passes to the next generation, practically creating a family tree, but with a party. sorry, my little informative newspaper, greetings from Mexico.
