We're back with another Cocteau Twins reaction. This time we get a little spooky. Surely we'll be able to understand the lyrics on this one! Listen to our podcast: anchor.fm/boy-...
This is my favorite Cocteau Twins album. I'm a 48 year old grandmother, and it is refreshing to see some young men reacting to and appreciating some shoegaze. ✌️
I'm 48 as well and not even a father yet, but cool to see our old flavors enjoyed by the newer audiences of today. I wouldn't call Cocteau Twins shoegaze per se, but I'm all too familiar with their influence on so many other great talents. Awesome to see they're still being acknowledged and the continuance of their fan base ever multiplying.
Aside for a large, bald lesbian bartender from a place in New York's Lower East Side that I will never find again (It was a magical night for so many reasons), I have never met anyone who genuinely likes the Cocteau Twins. God knows I've trying to spread the word since grade ten.
It’s a wonderful record! Robert Smith of The Cure played this while getting ready for and anticipating his wedding day with Mary 🖤😊 Very highly praised.
Ooh I enjoyed this reaction. I think the next CT album to do would be Blue Bell Knoll, which came out in 1988 and is sort of the bridge between Treasure and HOLV. They had another album before it and after Treasure as well (Victorialand), but I’d recommend listening to Blue Bell Knoll first.
Pandora to me sounds like the feeling of being in love - Head Over Heels, you might say. That's the record released just before Treasure. Its got my my second all-time favorite CT song - Musette and Drums. It's a bit more raucous than anything that followed it.
Apart from the first two (which I bought together in late 1983), I heard them all as they came out and for me they just kept getting better. This one will always hold a very special place in my heart because of seeing them live in December '84 in Brighton. Donimo always have a 'christmassy' feel for me. In retrospect, Blue Bell Knoll will always be my personal favourite to listen to, but having said that I am a huge fan and absolutely love listening to every single album!
My first exposure to the Cocteau Twins was listening to this album in my best friend's bedroom in 1985 when I was 15. That was the day the trajectory of my life changed forever, and for the better. Something about that first listen rewired my brain and set my soul free. CT for life.❤
Just loved this album, great seeing you reacting on this Treasure is a treasure for me. The Victorialand album, was helping me to fall asleep for many years in my teens. Well, most of the time I never fell asleep until the last song, was so in love with this music. Even had the great opportunity to see them live, once in Geneva.
Loved you guy's reaction! This is my favorite cocteau twins album and it was the last album I had gotte around to listening to. In my opinion it is the most diverse and lush sound that hits so many ethereal angles than HOLV. I love HOLV as well of course, it deserves the credit it gets, but to me this is where they were at their strongest! The album also has this feeling of it trying to tell a story that you can't quite understand but the album cover and title put you in that place they are trying paint a picture of with their compositions.
as far as I know she was never singing anything meaningful and it was intended to be like that, because she wanted to make people focus on melody, not lyrics
So glad you guys got around to this one and looking forward to Blue Bell Knoll and honestly whatever other Cocteau Twins albums you listen to. Their music is gorgeous and their ability to evoke emotions without even having intelligible lyrics is amazing in my opinion. Jerry, do go back to Heaven or Las Vegas! You might find that your ears have grown accustomed to their sound a bit and can more easily digest it.
Each Cocteau Twins album is like travelling to a different country or different world in a different time, it's not possible to compare album against album. It's about experiencing each album as a body of work individually and deciding if you like or you don't!
This album was recorded in 1984. Those drums are an early drum machine ... hence the "weird sound" to the snare. Elizabeth Fraser is known to use syllables instead of words to create feeling on the female named songs. Kinda like scat singing in jazz.
Pandora has been a top favorite of mine since the album came out. It's like Liz channeling Ella Fitzgerald. Scottish scat singing! Actually, there are more than few songs over the years where Liz gets into a scat vibe. Here's a great live performance of that song... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VGJIg6c1Zkg.html
Most of the songs leave me wanting a little more development but Pandora is the ultimate bike ride in a summer breeze track to get lost in. The general sound is so beautiful though but i prefer albums like Four Calendar Cafe or the tracks Feet like Fins that have a proper climax
I put faith in the lyric interpretation for Cicely in the following fan vid. Elizabeth Fraser has a fondness for foreign words, as well as for lists of names - like those of moth varieties, or, in Cicely, the names of highland wildflowers. You can appreciate with these lyrics how she bends language(s), too - there is meaning behind what seems at first to be nonsense syllables... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_JO2Rgp_OBQ.html
Heaven or Las Vegas sucked ass. I say that as a guy who, at 16, in the 80's, discovered them and their REALLY indie album GARLANDS. I didn't like HOLV, as it was too commercialized. I prefereed (still do) BBK - favourite CCT song - Pink, Orange Red. Tip: 'Otterley' us excellent to make love to on repeat.
Comercial doesn’t mean bad and HOLV definitely definitely doesn’t suck ass. I say that as a garlands lover too. Congratulations you like something niche but that doesn’t mean you’re too good for popular art. I pray for whoever you were banging and the pompous and self righteous lecture they most likely had to endure about how great your taste in music is, ruining what could have almost been a good time. Take ur big mouth and pretentious love making somewhere else😂
