Cod & Pollack on Lures | Small Tackle Change Brings Big Results

The time I fished this mark I fished it tide down and it was great with a couple of pollack and some nice cod on lures using HRF tackle. This time round I fished it tide up and had the same results, confirming to me that it's quite a good mark, despite the sketchy descent. The powerful ground swells made it a bit tricky but great to get back to doing some HRF fishing after all of the bass fishing I've been doing lately

Thanks Peter!! My thinking is that the harder the mark is to get to then the less pressure it has had and the greater the chance of catching is. 20yrs of climbing and mountaineering gives you the confidence to go down those tricky ledges and that adds to the content of your videos and targeting bigger fish I guess. I was a keen hillwalker in my earlier days but never went off the beaten track intentionally. Again well done and I'll stick to the sandy beaches we have here due to my disability. Great vid as always dude, nice chunky fish! Not sure if it's any use, but for superglue on the Z-manz, I use the Loctite bottles with the plastic edges you squeeze together: really easy to apply small amounts without getting glue on the knot and the cap is designed to twist in, so it's easy to unstick and doesn't leak.

@dsm5d723
@dsm5d723 2 года назад
Gannets are pretty amazing. Nov. 8th, 2014 in Rockaway, MILES of them diving about a mile offshore, with a massive morning bluefish blitz right on the open beach. The end was not visible in either direction. Smaller bait was outside the bar, and adult bunker were beaching themselves. Would something like Korkers make your fishing any easier? I dry jetty jumped for years with only regulars shoes or sneakers, but some jetties are death traps without metal spikes on your soles. The natural rocks out East are not the algae covered messes here. I put pan head screws into the bottoms of Timberlands and did Montauk no sweat. It looks like that rock is so much more porous so as to be grippier. Also, a strap system to put the rods on your person and leave hands free is potentially useful for the hard spots to get to. Great to see the light tackle fun.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 года назад
They are fantastic birds, sadly on the decline over here in the UK. The rock there has a good bit of friction and my shoes actually have climbing shoe rubber soles, so loads of grip. I've tried some studs ( I have them in my wading shoes) but find they can slip without any warning on the dry rock whereas the rubber tends to stick well. It's different story in the rain, though, and they definitely come in handy. Thanks for the tip and watching. Tight Lines👍🎣

Hi mate - I’m a fellow North Eastern lad ( Roker; S’unland’ but don’t hold it against me?) but I’m living up in Scotia now; have been since 2001. I really want to say well done on your vidz - you’re a talented dude! - and ‘by, you’re a brave lad’ getting to those spots! Ex rock climber skills? Looks to be… I bought a few spinning rods / combos on the strength of your vids a few weeks back as the last few weeks I’ve been itchin’ta get back to some form of fishing after my boyhood days on the pier at Roker or beach casting at Whitburn sands for flatties - it’s been 32 years since ive broken ‘an elbow in anger with a rod, and i thank you for inspiring me to get out again. So - I took a drive from Edinburgh (home now) to St Abbs on Sunday with the missus and we tried a ‘mark’ that wasn’t too sketchy to get too. In a glorious 90 minutes we had no fish, lost two metal lures, but had a blast! Saw a gannet dive too! Can I ask a few questions from a daft sounding beginner? I’m using a 2.1m light spinning rod - 8g to 25g with 12lb mono on it. I’ve got soft plastic eel lures and metal wedge lures ( and an ancient Toby krill) to try next Friday afternoon. - [ ] Do I need a leader? - [ ] Do I need a swivel? Only on a spinner, that may twist the main line? What about a soft plastic ( Sand eel , weedless type lure) ? - [ ] Can I just go lure straight to line? - [ ] If I need a leader; I’ve read o should use a fluorocarbon line - is it meant to be more lbs strength than the main line or less? - [ ] Any tips for an auld ex mackie spinner? I’m trying to get my two teenage girls into this lark so I can do it more as a family gig. Hehehhh. Sorry for the eejut approach - I’ve tried looking it all up ( I’m an English teacher up here at Dunbar, so should know better) but I got Alice’ed out my head down the rabbit hole, marra! Keep at it you lejjj - ‘tight lines’ I hear is the salutation! Gary W Ps - get those low profiles off the VRs, and winter tyres on - it’ll then get up a track that would stiffen in fright a three legged donkey! ;-)
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 года назад
Wow, thanks for taking the time to write your comment!! If I was you I'd ditch the mono and buy some good 20lb braid, and tie 20lb+ flouro leader on to that with an FG knot. If you get good quality braid the spinner won't really twist your line too much and negate the need for a swivel. The beauty of braid is that it doesn't stretch and dramatically increases bite detection, so will improve your hook up rate. Especially since cod and pollack like to hit a lure while it's sinking through the water column. That brings me on to the technique, most of our fish are near/on the seabed so let your lure sink until you feel the thud of it hitting the deck (again easier to tell with braid) and then start a lift and draw -a couple of lifts with the rod, followed by a couple of winds of the reel handle and then let it sink- until it gets close to your feet. You will get snagged but that means you're fishing in the right spots. Lure wise grab yourself a load of 28g Razor Claw Silver Minnows, quite literally the best lure for the price and perfect weight for the waters around St abbs etc. Hope this helps and thanks for the tip on the tyres. Alas, old Flavia is in the scrapyard in the sky now, she served me well for 10 years and 200k miles. I miss her 😢 I'm now driving a Seat estate 🥱

Thank you so much for the response and guidance, Slippy! Brilliant! I had bought braid after a trip to a fishing shop and Seaguar fleuro too. I’ve changed the mono on the soool ( haven’t done THAT for 35 years!) and I’m ready to hit St Abbs and Eyemouth today - it’s the school hols and I’m feeling lucky! Sincere thanks for the tips mate- you’re a gent! Tight lines! G

Worst bit was that numpty in the motor boat coming up right close with the tourists and creating a massive wake - and scaring the fish away. Eejuts! You're a wise lad - your tips worked a treat! I could feel the bottom, the kelp and the fish. I caught 11! Yes ; ELEVEN! 7 coalies, 3 pollock and a mackerel! A mackie in late October - weird no? I was waiting to see if you went to all that expensive and trouble to release the fish. I am on the west coast of Canada and we have a different cod than you. I make lead weights with snap swivel on top that I clip onto the line when I get hung up, to slide down the line. It dislodges the hook, if not immediately, on a couple of bounces. Haven’t lost a rig in over a year. I have enough fish in the freezer to last the winter.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 года назад
Your rig sounds intriguing, I've not heard of a rig that does that before. I do keep a fish every now and again but the bright orange cod live in that area permanently and if I take them, then eventually there won't be any left. Also, they don't taste as nice as the fresh run cod that come in from offshore during the winter. Tight lines 👍🎣

Do you try a sliding barrel lead onto your mainline then a swivel then about 4ft leader mono and put a jelly worm on a size 1 or 2 straight j , it's a method I use and I found if the fish aren't hitting a lure with a built in weight then this slightly more Tim consuming method seems to work especially get takes on the drop as the jelly flutters down a few feet behind the lead.

@SlippyLimpets 2 года назад
You're actually the first person who has had an issues with saftey that has commented about the dangers of the approach, normally its all about the life vest, so thank you. Just to add some context, my thoughts on the topic are- assuming I'm wearimg a life vest, hit my head and fall in- how is anyone going to rescue me when I regain consciousness if I can't contact them since a mobile is useless when you have wet fingers, which is where tha radio comes in handy. Also, I tend to fish straight into deep water so the chance of hitting my head is minimal and have you ever tried climbing out of the sea with a massive inflatable vest around your neck? It's almost impossible to get your arms up past your shoulders and therefore will need rescuing, unless I take the vest off in the water. Not wise. The media has a powerful voice and we hear much about the few that have tragic accidents, but there a few million more of us that have a great time fishing without living in fear of a 'What if' scenario. Sorry for the rant and hope you understand my choices. I don't suggest this is always the right way to go for everyone and I really appreciate your concern but having grown up on the coast, surfed for 20 years, and climbed for longer, I'm well in my comfort zone here and know what to do if the shit hits the fan.

@@SlippyLimpets well thanks for that long reply, so youre a surfer and a climber, i seem to remember the worlds best surfer drowned one day and we all know of climbers that have died on what has been a simple climb for them, even if not using the safety items you could have mentioned that first timers should think of that, anyone can slip coming down the cliff or on the wet rocks, there must be some light weight head gear that you could maybe recommend and as for the life vest im not talking of ones from 60 years ago im talking of the small ones they use now, i think some has a gps location button on them, and im not talking about any media, i just wonder what the RLNI would advise , and well in your comfort zone, you soon moved when you had a litlle bit of extra swell, dont you know ships out at sea can add a bit of extra lump, and of course most of those rescued were in their comfort zone to start with
