I think this is the most helpful review I've seen of these bows. The "bobbling" of the cheapish wooden bows is part of why I am looking to upgrade into a carbon fiber bow. Very interested in the GX because of the warmth I hear in that one over the others, but trying to decide if it makes sense for my level of playing.

I have an an NX, then later I got a Luma a year or so ago. I picked up the Luma the other day, thinking I had picked up the NX. I could sure tell the difference when I started to play. The Luma is my favorite.

When I bought my GX, I also trialed the NX for a week. I preferred the feel of the NX in my hand, but I ended up getting the GX because of the fatter tone it produced. Both are great bows. I should have trialed the others, but my local shop only had the two at the time.

I got the NX as it was the most appropriate for my budget but hope to afford the SX or the GX at some point. For now I am really happy and love my bow :)

Thank you; this is very helpful. I bought a GX. No one can tell from the sound that it’s not a good French stick. You do have to adjust from your familiar bounce point. These bows seem to place it a little higher in the stick.

I like the coda diamond gx bow a lot but I also have an incredibow and it sounds dang good!

You have described my dilemma. I like the sound of the GX better and the playability of the Luma. I'm trying bows out now and can't make up my mind. Trying JonPaul's against the GX this week but can't stop thinking about that Luma! Thanks for your help.

I own two of the Coda Luma bows. I absolutely love them. They both perform exceptionally. But there is a wee bit of difference in the feel between the two. I found that to be interesting. I own several very expensive wood bows. But I find I would much rather play the Coda Luma bows. However, I wasn't that interested in the Coda Diamond Series bows. For me they all felt just a tad bit sluggish in comparison with the Luma.

I have a Diamond GX viola bow. For the price it is much better than it should be. I think you would have to spend a good deal more to get the same performance from a pernambucco bow.

It might be a god idea to demonstrate on all four strings.

i have used the Codabow Classic for 13 years. i like it but really know little about Bows. No true knowledge upon which to base an opinion. Do you have an impression anout the Codabow Classic ?

Have you heard of the Codabow Aspire? Is it discontinued? What are its characteristics?

I have coda gx violin bow.

At about 6:10, you mentioned you like Glasser bows. I've tried the Coda Prodigy and was really excited about it. Is there an equivilant Glasser bow for a lower price? Another one I've seen online, but never tried is the Presto Audition which is also braided (it looks braided). Any recommendations on these or for a braided bow below $200 US?

Has the technology increased to produce even better carbon bows since this video was made?

I notice your Diamond GX has the braided carbon fiber along the bottom of the frog. I've seen other Diamond GX bows which have mother-of-pearl there. Is there anything to that difference? Did one variant come along first, then they changed it?

If I randomly listen to the sample legato passages played... the sound is pretty much indistinguishable. Maybe it's more apparent in person or while playing the instrument. But I've tried the cello versions of these Coda bows (NX, SX, GX) and... if I picked one up without looking at the frog, they all sounded the same.

Great video Richard, and what fun personality! :-) I have a question, if you wouldn't mind....My cheap Chinese wooden bow is almost on its last legs, and decided to invest into a Coda. Which one would you recommend for a 5 string electric? I am looking for a smooth, warm, effortless sound, especially on the electric violin which tends to sound metallic on the higher register. With my current bow it is hard to keep a stable, consistent sound on legatos, and requires quite a bit of effort to push against the strings to give a decent sound. I am quite annoyed with it. But since CB-s are expensive, I do not want to make a mistake on a purchase that is unexchangeable. Thanks :-)

I HATE CODA BOWS!! They usually do not pair well with instruments. I even have a Luis and Clark cf cello and wouldnt play any synthetic bow on it. They just dont work very well on them. You might as well make aluminum bows!!
