This is a lecture on Codecs. Why we compress and decompress and what is really happening with shrinking the size of our videos.
We talk about Picture, Audio, color, and frame. and how codecs interrupt that information to make online video look good and deliver smoothly for youtube and elsewhere.
Compression is a balance of Quality and file size.
This is part of a class I teach at Weber State University.
The video we watch at the end can be found here... • Encoding 101 - learn t... ... though some of the info is a little outdated now. ;)

I wish I knew the tech level of this video. This is really basic information you could learn within 1 hour of Wikipedia reading. I learned that people in 2012 still thought that macs were better at audio and video. And that pc's are cobbled together unlike macs which are magically formed in mount doom.

Great video. Can you please explain why people say that AVI is a container for uncompressed or lossless video but then they say there is a CODEC inside? If it is uncompressed, what is the codec doing? Just zipping and unzipping it? It is just confusing to me.

as far as I know, .mts files are used by Canon and other cameras to be able to shoot HD footage and store it as quickly and tightly as possible. You're correct, the codec.. or algorithm is doing exactly that, balancing the size with the quality. I think of it like a dehydrated file. When I take a clip into an editor, it will rehydrate (transcode) it and make it more robust and editable.

MP4 is not a codec but MPEG-4 is. Popular MPEG-4 standards are known as the advanced simple profile. H.264 is also known as MPEG-4 part 10.

The Bitrate setting will determine how much data (kb) fits within a second. (s) i.e., 10,000 kbps. Regardless of what you specify as the amount of data it can use for each second of video, you can also specify an independent key frame rate. Hope that clears it up! I'm teaching this course again this Semester and I hope to update some of these lectures and add more.

Can someone explain to me how its possible for the 1gb compressed file on his sd card to be 60 gb when decoded? And how can all the pixel information still be there?
@albinantony9134

Gran's Stuff it can be done because as he said that it ill carry the moving information and leave the rest so it has been manipulated like that as compression h 264 AVC advance video codec

Is there anything I can do to preserve the quality of an AVCHD recorded event after stupidly removing the .mts and not keeping the folder structure? I discovered how much better my end product is if I kept the folder structure but I have files now and no structure.
@oneerc
@oneerc 9 лет назад
I'm using Power director 13.
@knite20
@knite20 9 лет назад
Eric Feinstein There is software out there that can rebuild the folder structure if you give it a folder full of .mts files. Here's one from Panasonic, eww.pass.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/content/download/EN/restorer.html OR you can use just encoding software, like iSkysoft iMedia converter to transcode the .mts into another format that Power director likes.

Du-Marc, Yes, avi,mov,mp4 are all containers,, they can have any kind of codec inside. There are some standardized pairings, like mp4s mostly contain h.264. Here's a great video about it. Search Encoding 101 by smedia1

Understandable, Not sure I did the best job explaining that. A 'key frame' in compression is a setting that determines how many frames you'll see that are reusing compressed data to draw the scene. If you specify a Key Frame every 24 frames, then every 24th frame will be a fully rendered frame. Sometimes you can see this in overly compressed online video. the picture will be clear and then degrade/pixelate for a second or two before sharpening up again when it reaches another key frame.

The most common codec for mp4 would be h.264. But mp4 is tricky as it can be both a container...AND a codec. VLC is a hefty player and I know it has several options for codecs it can play and others you can install as 'packages.' There are tons of simple small programs out there that claim to play anything. But VLC is the most universally used.

It's all in the compression codec. For example, many cameras shoot with the AVCHD codec, it's small in size, but not great for editing. I like to think of it this way, the information is all there but it's "dehydrated" to make writing easier and faster for the camera. Then when your editor like Adobe Premiere or Final Cut get a hold of that condensed footage, it transcodes it to something it can read and display faster, which means much more data. Some Codecs are great for capturing footage, and others are great for editing because they're robust. Often we transcode the file to move from Shooting to Editing... and then often we transcode again for distribution. ;) Does that help?

Don't waste your time to watch this. It's covers 5% of the entire explanation of Codex. Read the Mpeg-2 or Mpeg-4 or H.263/H.265 Specs. Read the 700 pages book to get a true understanding. No short cuts in Life.
