Can code reliably on ipad pro with the m1 silicon chip? What are the best workflows for software development? I'm glad you asked because here are the 3 best ways to do front end coding on an ipad pro. Even though I focus on front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JS), the apps and workflows I share would work with a lot of backend development projects too. My goal is to find the simplest and most effective ways to set up an environment to develop react.js applications on an ipad.
Not only is coding on an ipad pro doable, it was a much better programming experience than I expected. That said, I don't plan to give up my m1 macbook pro anytime soon. The ipad pro could handle software development in a pinch, but I would not want to have it be my main tool for code.

Hey man, great video. I've done backend development through SSH on my iPad Pro, as I just use nvim + tmux on my desktop anyways. That was fine, but you're right about keyboard options not being so good. Nice thinking for frontend development. I had tried a VNC connection but it was too laggy for me. Maybe in another year or so there will be better options. This is an area that I feel Microsoft got it "right" with their Surface book. Carry around a functional laptop, but then pull the screen off and it goes into tablet mode. Wish we had that in Apple land!!

Wow. I watched another video on this exact topic today, and dude went out of his way to avoid actually coding on an iPad. I respect that you found a way. Obviously isn’t ideal, but I can imagine a workflow where you have a main desktop but to “get away” but still allow productivity you use the iPad for coding in other locations or for tinkering in your off time.

Like the video, but I do have a question, if I wanted to just use my iPad Pro to develop apps and things, is that actually possible, and other than your advice to use the MacBook Pro, do you have any other suggestions as to what programs are best used all around to incorporate accessibility without leaving a function ability and creativity?
@jamescross
@jamescross 2 года назад
there is no straight answers to these questions because so much depends on what it is you will be building. there are a lot of things that just can't be done well on an ipad due to how apple controls the ecosystem. personally, i would take an inexpensive windows laptop over an ipad for software development, but that's me.

Well switched my complete dev environment to a cloud vps (ubuntu server), installed code-server and developing dotnet core, vuejs apps in my browser. My benefits are: I can switch to another machine and my dev environment is the same as before. I can reinstall my machine without having to reconfigure everything, i can code on my tablet if needed. The best thing about code-server is that i have my full setup with docker, cli tools and so on. As soon as i push my code the main branch, the ci/cd pipeline will deploy to test and live server. Maybe this is an option for anyone.

I also need good high speed RDP. Like you, I want to be on the go, I am outside a lot. But I want to basically use it for personal use and for getting native app prototypes, demos, testing before committing to investing in a Mac devices.

Hey Hector! Honestly, it was fun to try out, but I kinda view coding on an ipad as a casual last resort thing. The more I think about it, the less likely I am to bother with it. The basic m1 macbook air with a 16gb memory upgrade is only $100 more than the base ipad pro 12.9". If I could have only one, I would go for the macbook air. still super light weight and portable. let me know what you end up going with.

I love the Snugg case + keyboard. Got mine five years ago, and it’s still great, super sturdy, and the keyboard still works perfectly fine, no lag or anything. you can use vs code if you do option 3. trying to set up your own environment is more complex on the ipad than on a macbook and probably not worth the effort. i started looking into it but concluded the three options i share in the video are the better options and the only ones i would consider for my frontend development projects. i just don’t see an ipad being an effective replacement for a laptop for most software development.

We also have courses where we rely on coding, like the Structures and Algorithms of a database which is basically learning programming languages. Since my major involves me writing down a lot and also a lot of programming, should I still go with an iPad or should I just get a laptop and try to write down calculus even though it envolves a lot of multitasking?

Personally I am also a software engineering student and currently in the 4th semester and 1.5 years ago I faced the exact same decision. While I do have an iPad Pro I haven't tried coding on it, I use another laptop for that. If you have the money, then that would also be my recommended setup. The Apple Pencil and iPad is very useful for taking notes, but for coding you definitely need a proper laptop, so if you have to choose one I would go with the laptop. Keep in mind that the iPad Pro is extremely overkill for notetaking and I can't come up with a single thing you couldn't do on the regular iPad for just a third of the price instead. You can get a good laptop and normal iPad (or maybe even iPad Air) for less than the big iPad Pro and still get the best of both worlds. If you have any questions, feel free to ask

@megaboy2811
@megaboy2811 2 года назад
@@redkitsuni5421 Oh my workplace is providing me the laptop for my studies so I can't even really tell you which one it is, seems to be a really generic Dell one with an i5. The iPad Air is definitely a good choice and the only reason to go for the iPad Pro instead would be the bigger size (12.9 inch) so maybe test them both out first in an Apple Store or something if thats a concern. In my opinion the Air will be perfectly fine for taking notes, but you might want the bigger one if you plan on doing a lot of multitasking (so having two windows open at the same time). I find myself doing that rarely with like lecture on one side and notes on the other, but obviously this might vary for you depending on your workflow. Regarding laptops I think any 400$ laptop would probably suffice for some simple programming tasks if you're not home, for anything else you will probably just use your gaming pc instead, especially if you have multiple monitors. Personally for that reason I find programming on a laptop really uncomfortable, because not only do you have one screen, its also really small. Despite that a laptop might become necessary in your studies at some point, so keep that in mind.

Title should be, "Coding on an iPad Pro like it were desktop." I came here hoping for a desktop alternative approach, but the approach was constrained to thinking like a normal development environment on a desktop system (but mobile). I'm looking for different thinking. Also, flip-flopping on frontend web dev with distributed tools (git/github) vs cord cutting seems to be self-defeating. Pick a lane. Either work completely unwired or work connected. If you're going to work connected, of course, there will be issues with connectivity. That's what developers already deal with day-to-day. It's not a strong enough reason not to be connected unless that's what you're shooting for. Also, I use so many online resources as a developer that if I did lose connectivity, I'm still barely functional even if I have access to all my systems. This video is just confirmation bias for all those that think it's not possible. I'm looking for a video by someone that actually tries to make this work.
@jamescross
@jamescross Год назад
Let me know if you find a good workflow. I was looking to see what was out there and it seems you have to be very reliant on apps that provide the infrastructure you need for serious development and that is hit or miss depending on what languages and frameworks you need to use. I like the flexibility to choose the tools that best help me solve a problem and avoid circumstances where a device restricts what I can do. For my case building single page web applications, it's just too limiting and adds too much friction so I do most everything on laptop. I want a workflow that improves my efficiency, not slows me down. If you are building simple stuff, it may be possible to make it work but for more complex systems, an ipad isn't worth it imo. For what it's worth, I've mostly worked at large enterprise type companies and I don't know of a single coworker who codes on an iPad. Best wishes.

Desktop is for now only best tool one can have. Its (should be) be always superior to laptop that is superior to tablet. Tablet is generally used by kids to watch movies and old folk to manage daily business. Its not intended for any serious work and probably wont be in near future. Make app that makes for example designing microshipping more fluent than on powerful software made for pc for example. If you see potential in touching screen try and implement yourself. I see very little value for any serious coding. If you do make your own language purely for mobile end. Like dart but that uses speech? You go girl and until than dont be f**king imbecile and go use actual machine designed to be everything and not just to be storage for unsent dickpicks.

I wanna code iOS apps, so what could be the setup for that?
@jamescross
@jamescross 3 года назад
you could try swift playgrounds
@LoriWolfcat
@LoriWolfcat 3 года назад
@@jamescross Oh mi gosh, thanks!! It’s such a fun tool! With coding android apps, is there something similar to Swift Playgrounds, where you get to really play with it? And with code editors, it lists all coding languages it has, so if a coding language isn’t listed, does it mean it wouldn’t run when you try to run it? Cuz I’m a little confused about why a code editor wouldn’t have each language. Is software development making actual applications for computers? I wish they would make a better word differentiating “app” for phone and “applications” for computers. Also, Another word for “applications” for jobs. Haha hopefully one day!

@@jamescross Or how to convert iOS to android.
@jamescross
@jamescross 3 года назад
@@LoriWolfcat Some editors are open source others are private. You could write code in a plain old text app, but code editors provide useful tools like code snippet hints and the ability to click on a function and jump to the page where the function is defined. It takes a lot of work to do this for each language so usually they focus on more popular languages or one language in particular. also some apps like ios have their own special requirements like xcode and you can run into license issues. so many different reasons for it. as for software development, that is a high level description of what we do. native apps would be those that run on an operating system whether on desktop or device. There are also web apps (web development). You can even build apps using web technologies and deploy them onto devices which are called hybrid apps. Each of these areas can be broken down into smaller specializations.
@jamescross
@jamescross 3 года назад
@@LoriWolfcat I'm not sure about that. That is one of the appeals of hybrid apps because you build it in one language and deploy to ios and android. the downside is there can be hits to performance and the user experience won't be quite the same as native apps. you could look at something like react native for this.the last time i worked on a hybrid app was several years ago, so they have probably improved.

any local IDE supports Angular on ipads?
@jamescross
@jamescross 3 года назад
everything i do now is in react so it wasn't really on my mind to look for angular compatible stuff. to have it local might be tough. let me know if you find something that works. have a great day!

I didn't try react native but their website says: React Native 0.59.0 apps bundling and execution.

I could probably do a better job asking for subscribers, but I'm still on the fence about that. Just feels like it distracts from the videos more than I like. Thanks for watching!
