Hello there. I'm an economist, with a master in Data science. Then, I became a self taught web developer. I've been working on this for around 5 years. I'm trying to migrate to Canada. I'm in a situation in which I'm usure that I can fill the gap of no having formal studies in software development with a Master program or pursuit a different program such as the Master in Quantum Computer of U of Calgary. Any advice?

Just to add my 10 cents worth: I've been coding for a long time & recently picked up an 10 month old Dell Latitude 5521 with 11th Gen i7 (8core/16threads) processor, and 16Gb (one DIMM) for a very reasonable price. Since buying it 8 weeks ago, I have upgraded to 32Gb RAM by purchasing a matching DIMM from overseas, and added an additional 3Tb of storage, for a total of 3.5Tb, which is made up of the original WD 512Gb 2230 NVMe (4x4), Samsung 1Tb 2280 NVMe (4x4), and Seagate 2Tb SATAIII (rotational) HDD ... all this and Linux too =)

I'm in that boat right now. I got out of the military with no marketable skills to speak of (and got screwed by the VA.) My eife and I both work full time + in dead-end jobs to scrape by paycheck to paycheck in our little 2 bedroom apartment in the not so great part of town. My bank account is at 0 a week before payday most months, and my car got repoed because I couldn't make the payments, so we share 1 20 year old car that's falling part between us. I don't need to be a billionare buy super yachts and privaye jets. I just need basic stability and security so I can actually be a person again, instead of a dead broke cog in a pointless machine with no prospects for the future. This is why, yesterday, I decided to become a programmer. I appreciate your story showing that it's possible in my situation and all the info you provide. If I don't, I'm going to stay a broke, stressed and unfulfilled pest control technician for the rest of my life.

Magic mouse is garbage. Magic mouse is to thin and very uncomfortable to edit with. MX Master S3 is a much better mouse. Not buying another magic mouse going with MX Master 3S. The magic mouse looks like a cheap plastic Fisher Price Toy. Apple needs to redesign the magic mouse to be to more comfortable and productive.

I've never had a good experience with recruiters. In my experience they'll say anything to make their sales even if that means 'bending' the truth. By the way, I only know basic css html and JS what advice can you give on turning any little projects I have into SaaS? Just in terms of services I'd need to use and learn in order to get it functional online.

I know this is an older video, but it's definitely what I needed to hear. I recently decided where I want to switch my career to after I've been a network admin and help desk guy for 15 years and have grown so tired of it. Im week 2 into self learning Python and loving it. I'm also going to pick up JS and HTML. Do you see any use in Python as a front end designer?

Before knowing aws and setting up homeserver, I usually recommend my friend to go with window or anything beside MacBook if they have taken any assembly code classes. Because that x86_64 assembly code does not work on intel or m1 mac. But now I change, I fully commit and recommend getting macbook. You can build a lot of things with Mac these days.

Also those same people "you're closed to ideas, let's go only Ubuntu and python". Which is again cool, but as you state "the right tool for the right job" is my philosophy as well; I'm not going to force business users to do it my way if there's an easier way to do it. While I agree with most of the points, inexperienced and experienced fall into the same extremes either for positive or negatives things (for experienced could be over testing for example and for middle ignoring data optimization later on the road). As for example the 5. (hyped technology) is contradictory with the perspective at 1. (that self taught is unwilling to learn new things) yet at this 5 it's stated that it's wrong to learn the latest on the field, so which one is it?

lol. What system to use well that is easy. Anything with a basic gui. No matter how I try to love Mac or use windows, I always end up tempting in to home and code on a rhel dev vm. It just feels like it is my comfort zone so a lot of this really in end comes down to what you like. That said as in video don’t go dropping cash on stuff not needed. Learn over time. Each system will have its own issues to deal with. For me, I generally go either Debian or rhel. I very very rarely peek outside. Mac is cool but meh. Only got one because was curious about the m2 chip. For what it does it is great, but you can have solid programming machines for relatively cheap. Even your grandmas old notebook will do at start of journey.

Hello there nice to visit your RU-vid channel. Your content are really good. Keep it up🏆 but i notice one thing that is you have not done video editing trending style. If you do editing trending style then your videos look will be attractive and eye catching and you content is well so this is enough for increasing views, audience and engagement. I am a video editor i am able to edit any kind of editing. Most of the time i worked with youtubers so i know well how to make viral content by editing. If you interested then let me know and i am able to edit a sample so also let me know about sample editing. Can i?

Took me 7 months averaging 4-5 hours a day, before I took my second interview receiving a mere 25,000 a year. But it was my foot in the door. I used my Free Code Camp projects to showcase, and a few other projects from my Codepen account. Just know this, when you get that first job, you may feel you know nothing at all. And that's alright. Breathe. It's a never ending learning process.

This is all fun and games but these are movie scenarios these are not reality. We dont all have fortunate/successful, friends/family. And we dont all participate in groups like church, agencies and etc. And all the times i asked my boss if i could help the company to get some web development experience, either though shadowing, or straight up volonteer to work on platforms with IT and all i get told to fuck off, to know my place, that is not my task definition and sometimes your boss is more the soft hypocritical type and will spew corporate jargon at your face for 30 minutes only to explain why it is not poasible for you to even try going up the ranks or get more experience. Essentially once again, know your place slave. You gave amazing solutions if we lived in a perfect world where people where here to help one another not exploit each other. And that makes me very frustrated because its the same story all the time people teel you you cant find a job because your are no teying hard enough. For sure its millions of us who dont deserve to have a fair shot for sure i guess. I have a degree and i have been coding self taught for 2 years now i code typescript i use radixui graphql i have fixed my insecurities on back-end coding i am confortable at api integrations i have build and hosted a website for a restaursnt which i got paid for, i have blogs, demo applications etc. Yet i still cant even get a call. My resume is 1 page i highlight what is important and i go straight into why i would be the perfect fit tfr the company yet i cant even get an interview. Im tired of everyone trying to justify this broken system.

@northloo
@northloo 21 день назад
@@jamescross thanks for the support man. Im not mad at you. Its just horrible out there man. It takes a big toll on my mental to sleep at 4 a.m. every day coding amazing things to prove my value and getting spit in the face everytime i want to present my value. I express myself very well, i am thorough, and i can manage entire projects by myself from creating the pipeline to deployment. So you can imagine how dark my mind gets. I just can't understand. What more can i do? I tried everything. I have been trying to get in the industry for 2 yeas. Im going crazy man. Because when i want to do B2B creating websites for people is not sustainable and its hard to work with small businesses that know nothing about technogy. Try to convince a barbershop owner or an independant car dealership or real estate agent, that data analysis and a proper web app is the key to unlocking more revenue and more efficient workflow?? But on the other hand you try to get a job in the market and nobody believes that you are capable to do what they ask, they won't even talk to you unless you have 5 years exp. And a full bach. Degrees at a minimum. I am stuck between two worlds my friend i just don't know what to do anymore.

Awesome video I just came across it. I am going to school for Web & Mobile Development and my laptop is too old (11 years old ASUS) so I am looking to upgrade but on a budget. Noticed that Walmart & Best Buy offer the M1 Macbook Air 8GB RAM for $699. Do you think this would work fine for what I need to do or will 8GB RAM not be enough? Considering the price difference to get more RAM on another model. Thank you.

Universities provide proof, proof that you can finish a program, and proof that you know the basics. As many new grads found out, you still need to push forward to get the experience needed to land an entry level job (Not that you are seeking an entry level job). No one can tell you how to live your life, but that's what a degree is, a proof of competency. You still need to go forth and update yourself to the current state of technology. My only disappointment with Universities is how tied they are with capitalism.

Why did you choose thomas over wgu cs program?
@jamescross
@jamescross 28 дней назад
Main reason was Thomas Edison had more flexibility with scheduling. WGU is less flexible with its 6 full time blocks. Also, WGU courses are fixed. You don't get the electives options. However, per my comments in the video, TESU doesn't have as many options as I would have hoped. My prior history degree covered more credit hours at TESU. If I didn't already have a degree and was determined to go an online route, it would probably be WGU. Disclaimer: I worked at WGU before coming to Adobe.

While it's unfortunate you decided to quit, I completely agree with your conclusions. Probably around 90% of the CS courses I've taken were useless. It's exactly as you said - teaching the history of AI instead of building one; learning about paradigms in software engineering when we had never made a project longer than 200 lines of code, etc. The good courses were Databases, Data Structures and Algorithms, the web development ones, and Networking (although barely useful as it didn't really go in depth). Maybe there were a couple more that I'm forgetting. It's the sad reality for many degrees though. Most consist mostly of theory and very little practice, only to later be told, "Oh, you expected more? Sign up for one of our master's programs." (btw they're no better) In my opinion, degrees make sense when you're young and have no work experience since a degree can somewhat offset the lack of experience. While you're young, you still have no idea what you want to do in life, so the 4-6 years (if you go for a master's) you get can be used for making those decisions. It's a good thing you gave it a try, though! It takes some bravery to quit. Most people just get stuck in the sunk cost fallacy mindset.

Great vid, ive been curious about those places too, ultimately i went back to brick and mortar school last summer/fall. I was on the same boat when it came to atleast math. Retook college algebra as a refresher (i was ultimately bored enough to get a c), took trig and killed it, then failed calc 1 first attempt and looking at finishing up in a couple of weeks. If you're finding yourself nerverous about math and retaining it across multiple classes, one thing that has really been carrying me this semester after failing last semester has been mycalcworkshop. Its a subscription but she has so many classes covered and even goes more in depth than my classes but the real kicker is just great she is at explaining and not taking prerequisite material for granted. I never hit a wall like before of being like wtf how does that work? And go spend forever trying to find some youtube video that just happens to explain the one particular situation tripping me up. Anyways best of luck, look forward to future updates
