We lived in an apartment when my oldest was about that age, and one night, he was teething and completely inconsolable. After a few hours of us trying to calm him, giving him tylenol and cuddles,we decided that he was probably overstimulated, and we lay him down in his crib. He really fussed for a few minutes and then finally fell asleep. Somone called the police on us, and I was annoyed. I showed them our sleeping baby and explained that he was teething and that we had had a hard time getting him off to sleep. I was irritated because I knew that we weren't abusing or neglecting him, but after watching this, I'm glad we had neighbors who cared enough to call!

I think we have to use common sense; if you hear a baby crying hysterically once, or over a couple of nights, they are probably ill/ teething. It’s when it’s a regular occurrence it needs attention. You can’t have police turning up every time a baby has a bad night; your neighbour did overreact. It’s the neighbours who *knew* this woman was habitually neglecting her child and did not alert authorities that behaved unforgivably. They have a level of culpability.

@NoelleTakestheSky

@@daisyproud110 I agree on the neighbors overreacting to one bad night (in many areas, police and CPS already don’t have time to take appropriate action on actual abuse, and stretching the thinner means faster reaction times in cases that end up with dead people), but disagree that Crystal’s neighbors are to blame. Crystal’s established pattern was asking a neighbor to babysit before ditching her, and the crying was caught on a Ring doorbell outside, not by people outside. Given the nature of this, and Jailyn’s age being an age where kids will scream like they’re being skinned alive over not getting ice cream for dinner, it makes sense that the neighbors had no idea Jailyn was alone, or that anything out of the ordinary was going on. What was ordinary there wasn’t great, but the ordinary wasn’t going to result in a dead baby. This wasn’t ordinary for Crystal.

Right, but it's an insane one. Like, it would require total mental and cognitive instability to do this and assume you won't get caught. This case truly is weird. If she wanted to kill her baby, she could have done it much more intelligently than this. Not that I would ever support such a thing, but I'm a true crime fan, and these videos outline clever murder plots all the time. I don't understand her logic here, even if she was intentionally trying to kill her kid. It's the worst plan ever. Childrens' cartoons come up with better schemes than this. I'm a mother who is in 24/7 adoration of my little one, so that was hard to type. But I'm also a data analyst, and I know an edge case when I see it.

My mom told me a story from when she was in her late 20s and living in a crappy apartment with paper thin walls: her neighbor was in a _very_ abusive relationship, and my mom called the police every time she heard him starting to attack her. The woman eventually found out it was her and flipped out on her, and my mom just told her if she heard it, shed be calling, every time. And she did. The lady never pressed charges, but after like a year the guy skipped out on her. She said one day the lady stopped her in the hall and thanked her, because if she hadn't called she was sure hed have killed her Which yeah, probably. The guy kept attacking her _knowing_ the police would be coming. Thats a crazy amount of rage to have

Not necessarily. There's a woman living behind my place of work who is constantly screaming at her kids who are all 3 under about 6 1 still in a pram is barely a toddler. I reported to social services, police and MASH (multi agency safeguarding hub) at least once a week, usually more, for almost a year! My colleagues also reported. Nothing got done we were just ignored for all that time until I told my friend who's an officer that of something didn't get done soon I would confront the woman myself, take the kids to country hall and drop them off at social services and he'd be arresting me what I go back to do to the mother. That afternoon 2 social workers visited and a few weeks later there started being weekly visits from ss checking in n the mum calmed her shit down. The point being, perhaps people did report and try and sort something out, maybe even many times and were just ignored.

When she said “It’s not like I shot her or beat her with a bat”, my immediate thought was, “actually, that would have been more humane”. Thats says a lot. Secondly, as a person with ADHD and long term depression, I take major objection to people who use mental illness as blanket defense to explain away acts of violence. Most of us who suffer with mental health illness don’t harm others, and if there be neglect or harm, it is often done to one’s self. This was a truly horrifying case and I thank Stephanie for using her platform to bring it to a larger audience.

To be fair, I hear baby’s cries from my neighbors houses sometimes. I don’t assume the baby is alone. My second child cried nearly every waking moment for the first 3 months. I held him and sang to him and nursed him but he was either sleeping, eating, or crying. Doctors didn’t know why. I still don’t. He’s fine now and taller than me! BUT, I think the neighbors also knew the baby was often left alone. If I heard a baby crying for days and I didn’t see any evidence of an adult coming or going when I knew the baby was often left alone, I’d check. If no one answered the door, I’d call the police.

I’ve heard of women who had PPD who heard voices, one woman found herself staring over her baby’s crib for hours & she was struggling so bad but she didn’t murder her baby. I can’t believe there are women on here defending Kristel. Who is the other child? I think Kristel just wanted to be rid of Jalyn. This was pre-meditated. @nickieellison190 I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that there was nothing you could have done. We still don’t understand what causes SIDS but babies don’t die without reason, there is strong evidence that there may be a part of the brain that functions to regulate automatic bodily functions that is defective in these babies. It’s little comfort to their families but terrifyingly unpredictable and difficult to prevent. My mother has been a NICU nurse for almost 50 years and has watched premature babies time and again forget to breath, that part of the brain has not fully developed yet and it often takes considerable time for that function to finish maturing. We have come so far in science but still have so much to learn. Again I am sorry for your loss and pray that the memory of your child is a blessing to you.

Babies can be colicky but I like to think that after a day or two I’d at least check if the baby and/or mother was ok. Even if it is colic, dealing with a colicky baby as a single mother is incredibly stressful and difficult and I’d want to offer that mother my help, make sure she’s coping, see if she needs anything. There’s a single mother with a tiny baby living in the apartment upstairs from me and my daughter. The baby can get colicky and loud. I’ve told her many times: If you need ANYTHING, if you EVER feel overwhelmed, I’m literally right downstairs and I’m here for you!

Yeah, I agree. Only those who knew her after death sat on her side, literally and figuratively, it seems. My mother always told us that if we ever _really_ hurt someone then she would completely disown us (except for self defense or protecting another). In my opinion, there is *no* good reason to defend her. Excuses like, "But it's their daughter" do *not* cut it for me. That baby was their _grandbaby_ , and that *grown woman* chose a *vacation* (that she seemingly had planned and carried out every detail for, without issue) over her own _daughter_ . How do they not see that what she did (or FAILED to do) shows _exactly_ what kind of demonic nature _really_ lurks inside of that woman? The question the court always asks is not, "Are they mentally ill." It is, "Did they know right from wrong" because you can have issues mentally and *still* know full well what you're doing is _beyond wrong_ - it's *evil* . Just like someone who is mentally ill can choose to do good. I hope they don't think she loves them either, because she had to have known it would hurt them if something happened to that baby. She'd starve them if she felt the need to just the same as the baby.
