doublewide6 Repairs LLC great job. What do you suggest it is when the coffee maker doesn't come on or light up at all?? Only thing shows is the time and it's @ 12:00 like when the power goes out in your house and all the clocks are at 12..... Having issue with my coffee machine right now... I need coffee I don't start the day without it.

+Darryl Landry I'm not really trying to save any of them it is just fun to see how they work and how they fail. Usually with electronics the same things fail on each unit. In fact, I bought a book that shows me everything that is wrong with flat screen tv's. I fixed 3 tv's by ordering the known parts that go bad from each one. Nice job fixing yours. I'm using mine right now!

thanks. Nice step by step in depth fix video. I fixed mine by not taking it apart at all..There's a hole at the bottom of the water intake reservoir where you pour the water in, I used some wire and stuck it in there, and cleaned out the gunk. The inlet hole was clogged with coffee gunk. Then it worked again fine. I then just ran water thru the coffee maker several times till the water ran clear. Good luck.

You were spot on about the thermostat. Mine is out, too. Looked it up on the company website and the little thing is only good for about a thousand cycles. Geez... Make 2 pots a day and the coffee maker won't last 2 years. Talk about planned obsolescence. My model must be newer than yours, because they changed to screws to something most people don't have and don't have a clip anymore. Just two screws. Maybe that was less expensive or TS maker changed the connection. Thanks again.

Great video. Do you have a source for the round plate the heater attaches to? I've looked everywhere and wound up making my own (4 5/8" x 20 gage). I'd like stainless steel or brass. Also I just used a 3/8" drill to drill out/off the two 'security' screw standoffs. They're not needed anyway.

Of that model coffee pot what is the highest heat temperature on the coffee maker pad when working correctly. I notice many coffee maker companies claim one wants a note of heat for coffee some pots advertise that , however this one does not stipulate it - is it as high as others even at low cost of it ? Curios of what you thermal meter reads for it versus others ?

quick question. what do you call the tiny crimp connector that's used to fasten the SEfuse to the wire? when I search for "uninsulated butt connector" I get nothing but larger, regular butt connectors. I want to be sure the heat shield is able to slip back over everything after the repair, so would like to find the same type used by the manufacturer. thanks

thank you for posting this. My heating plate will not heat but my coffee maker also will not brew. It doesn't make any sound other than first click when I turn the unit on and the two green lights and the one blue light come on. it doesn't even attempt to siphon the water... Do you think that if the thermostat is bad but it might affect the Brewing process? this is the second coffee maker of the exact same model that I've had in the last 2 years lol

Same problem here. I used a 140*C KSD302 16A (250 Volt) NC (Normally Closed) ceramic switch to repair mine. You need this temp, as opposed to a lower temp switch, otherwise there's not enough heat to boil the water in a reasonable period of time. Conversely, too much heat can damage things so pay close attention to the thermal switch ratings. The proper switch should open once temperature rating is reached, limiting electrical current based on temperature. The replacement switch terminals were oriented slightly different from the original switch terminals and my spring-clip bracket held the switch from the back side so I wound up using an mica transistor heatsink insulator to avoid the terminals from touching the clip bracket. This mica insulator was necessary b/c the original switch had countersunk terminals and the replacement switch didn't. Be very careful on this if yours is configured this way, getting it wrong can lead to hazards. The two 216*C thermal fuses were fine, so I didn't need to replace them. The screws were square drive heads instead of phillips, surely the manufacturer didn't want unauthorized access. There was no heatsink compound on my original switch to transfer heat into the switch, I don't think it's necessary anyway although it won't hurt to use a dab if you prefer, IMO. Coffee maker is back to it's old self chugging away normally, probably will go another 20 years.

Same result with my Brim SW20. The pot heater works but it won't heat water or brew (cycles directly to the 'keep warm' stage, as if brewing was finished. From reading around it seems to be a very common problem with this model. Anyway, if you look on the part there are numbers/letters printed on it. You can search on eBay or some place for the type your pot uses and find them real cheap.. like a buck or two. just make sure you get an exact match. also, they typically are crimped, not soldered, so you might look into that process if not familiar (there's not a lot to it)

There is another symptom a bad 'stat will cause, and the multimeter test won't find it. My unit would brew a partial batch, give the "done" beep, and stop pumping water. I had to push "start" one or more times to complete the brew. The 'stat was working, but shutting off at too low of a temperature. A meter would show mine closed and working, as it resets quickly. I pulled the 'stat away from the tube so it stayed cool. I could brew a full tank of water. CAUTION: you need to cut the power before the tank goes completely empty or the element will overheat and can blow the thermal fuse.

Nice job on that. I just had the same problem with my Mr. Coffee---it stopped working in the middle of a brew. I opened it up to take a peek. I don't know much about things electrical, but I found it curious that mine had two identical fuses in tandem like yours as well. Well, in my case, one of them was blown. After doing some reading it seems to me that including two fuses like that was a decision based on reasons of history and litigation, and not so much of engineering. So, I just clipped out the broken one and closed the circuit. Turned it back on for long enough to finish my brew. Still, the fuse apparently did its job, so I have to wonder why it blew in the first place? Did it really get that hot? The thermostat technically has a much lower temperature rating than the fuses, so there's that. I have some thermal grease for computers... I wonder if it would also help to re-thermal the heating element to the plate...?
@RonS387
@RonS387 4 года назад
Those two smaller devices are safety thermal cutouts (rated at say 200C). With repeated usage they typically fail 'open' removing power. I'm thinking that the extra one is there for extra safety.

My coffee maker is brewing luke-warm coffee. Would that be the heating element or thermostat?
@FisherCatProductions
@FisherCatProductions 9 месяцев назад
The water coming out of any coffee maker is 212°F. No warmer, no colder. That is simple physics. The same heating element that boils the water heats the base of the coffee pot while it's brewing. Unless you have a metal carafe version, it should continue to warm a glass carafe for several hours. The heating element on metal carafe machines shuts off as soon as it is done brewing. One of mine is metal and the coffee cools as soon as it hits the metal. It never gets as hot as the glass carafe which is constantly heated by the brewing element.

Make sure you are using a high temperature silicon hose for this repair, not some cheap 39 cent thing from Lowes or Home Depot that will melt due to the water temperature AND its close proximity to the heater coil in the base. Can the thermostat still work but not allow it to get hot enough to brew? Mine will brew then shut off after it reaches around 230.
@RonS387
@RonS387 4 года назад
Yes. The larger device is actually the thermostat, that should cycle on and off to keep the brew at the proper temperature. With time they can get faulty, and start cycling at different temperatures. Replacement is then necessary.
@FisherCatProductions
@FisherCatProductions 9 месяцев назад
Water boils at 212°F--period. It cannot get hotter than that as it turns to steam. Not sure what you are measuring with, but water cannot exist at 230°F at normal atmospheric pressure. The thermostat that keeps it warm can fail partially and, as Ron said, cycle on and off a too low a temperature...which will always be below 212.

I'm not a crimp person, I would have liked to have seen a soldered joint and a shrink... It's probably what was there, I did not pay enough attention. The crimp is although a good test subject. There is always wiggle room on design but it best to try and stick to the design. Good job on finding the issue with this product...
@doublewide6
@doublewide6 8 лет назад
+Curiosity From what I could see when I looked at it prior to the video all connections are spot welded because you can see dents on the back side of the connections from the spot welder. I was worried that solder would heat up and melt. I also noticed that they used a copper crimp to hold together the fuses. Thanks for commenting.
@RonS387
@RonS387 4 года назад
@@doublewide6 Regular solder will not work well, due to the heat that is always there on the element. The crimp is fine. However, you should probably remove the plastic covering over the ends of those spade crimp terminals first, as they are going to melt and get brittle anyway, as they are not meant to take heat. Also heat shrink would also not be a good idea, as it can't take that much continuous heat.

@FisherCatProductions
@FisherCatProductions 9 месяцев назад
YES it matters. If it allows the unit to get above the design temperature it will melt the overheat fuses. If it manages not to, a hotter 'stat will allow the coffee to overheat in the keep-warm cycle and evaporate it too fast, making it bitter.

Thanks for the video. Is there such a thing as a water pump? How does the water move through the coffee maker to the brew basket?
@SeeK404
@SeeK404 4 года назад
The steam from heating pushes hit water and is the pump. If you look at the hose coming from the water, it has a ball. That is a check valve so cold water can enter but hot water can't go back. As the water heats, the water expands and is pushed out the hot tube with the steam bubble. Steam stops when the water dries and cold water drops in, repeating the cycle. That is the sound you hear while it is making. If there is no new cold water, the heater becomes hotter the thermal switch shuts off the heater and relay goes into keep warm.

Mr Coffee Model BVMC EHX23 - the thermostat is brand RU (backwards R) part number KSD 303 125v 12A 155 degrees centigrade.. Looks like not all the Mr Coffees use the same temp rating thermostat. And there are dozens of companies making those thermostats. I just junked out my neighbors non working Mr Coffee (good thermostat and good fuses so go figure) and there are 2 small plastic tubes inside that all the water flows through and they are just disgusting. Packed with crud and rust. Same for the heater pipe. And you are drinking that coffee? Yuck. I wonder how much this caused my neighbors health issues.

I'm not a crimp person, I would have liked to have seen a soldered joint and a shrink... It's probably what was there, I did not pay enough attention. The crimp is although a good test subject. There is always wiggle room on design but it best to try and stick to the design. Good job on finding the issue with this product...

Solder is not a good idea in this instance because it is too close to the heating element (the lead would melt). This is why the original connection was welded instead of soldered.
