Overlooked and odd, forgotten and underestimated coastlines seem to be a special fascination for TSJ contributor Michael Kew, who has submitted various dispatches from peculiar corners of the globe. In the print edition of TSJ 25.3, Kew lands in the Cocos-Keeling Islands, a remote chain of coral atolls. Hunting for reef setups fueled by the Indian Ocean, and with a research trove that hinges deeply on Charles Darwin’s 1836 survey of the area, his piece unpacks not only the history of the zone but also its current surf potential.
“The left is a bawdy and erratic beast,” he writes of the main wave. “I call it the Crab Slab since the majority of its tubes pinch shut. Lots of hurt involved. Paddling-wise, the proper takeoff nook is up the line and uninhabitable but dreamy had we a jet-ski assist. Beyond that is Antarctica. Between there and here, big sharks thrive, drawn to atolls and steep slopes into the black depths, down from the barrier reefs.”
Shot and edited by Kew, this clip offers an extended look at a lonesome place that’s been surveyed and mostly disregarded by surfers, explorers, governments, opportunists, naturalists, and geologists alike.

Gorgeous, the raw swells with softly wandering piano keys paints a novel vibe

The ledge is a serious wave! Especially if your taking off behind the point! On the right swell...biiiigggggg! It connects all the way through and past the surf shack! Got some old VHS tape of one such day! 15ft plus! Connecting all the way through and me geting chomped and hospitalised as I tried straightening out at the ledge section. Hectic times! Hectic current! Did you get into towers while you there? That wave is amazing. You take off out the back and look down the line and it wraps almost 45deg around the reef and you just lock in for get barrelled for ages. Big deep long caves out there tho got sucked through one once and tore up my back and arms trying to keep my body out of the canyon like cave and from being sucked into the hole

Definitely not an easy get, location or wave(makeable ones anyway). Amazing place though. Stopped over here briefly many moons ago & scored super fun waves(my first ever stand-up) courtesy of the local board shack.. Typical tropical story, boy meets waves🏄🏼 falls head over heels😍spends next 20 years(& counting) chasing more & going broke🏄🏼🙏🏽😵‍💫💸💸. Thanks a lot c@&nts🙄🥳🤣🤣 But seriously this oasis is forever etched in my mind🙏🏽👍🏽😍 probably shouldn’t have named it but..

Wow! Looks heavy and shallow, and for sure somewhere you would not want to get injured

Surfed it. Never saw it good and was there for a few weeks. Was tough. Waves coming out of deep ocean dumping onto heavy coral reef. So humid cuts don't want to heal either.

Probably paddle in. Buy a plane ticket out of there. Go surf cocos keeling, cook islands, norfolk island or any of the more unknown pacific islands. Indo is just a cheap place to try catch mellow reef breaks. The warmer the water the less dense it is and the softer it is. Maybe go surf Ireland. Always options.

Michael Kew and TSJ, yes, exposing spots for decades. This is what they do. We all love the pretty pictures but it is completely unnecessary to know where these surf spots are located. Twice I challenged Mr. Pezman to distinguish himself and be the first publication to publicly swear off naming spots but he declined. They even covered some lame spot near my home and then parking became such an issue it got shut down, a total bummer for the locals there. TSJ knows not what it does.
