This actually works on any bass with a split-coil. or even a humbucker, or any two pickups!

Thanks for the comparison. I like the down (series) position. It sounds beefier/louder.

Thanks for sharing your experience with this. The shot of the pre-installation CTS circuit board wiring was very helpful. I just finished the modification today on my 2023 Squire Sonic Precision bass with a Relentless Middle pickup. Parallel mode for slap provides a more even tone and more bite on the pop. I also think it sounds more like a jazz bass in that mode as well, which I like for home practice.

This is awesome, I can't wait to do this to my p-bass! It might become more suitable for slapping, the drop in volume is also convenient for that.

Thank you! Cool to hear the difference. I like the parallel setting; just my own preference.

It's a cool sound, but the scooped mids tend to make it disappear a bit in the mix, so I'd adjust the eq to compensate

Haha no! All pickups are fine if you're willing to cut or resolder the wires. Di Marzio makes them already separated so you can wire them as you please

In regards to this mod, I went from "nah I'm not doing this" with fingers, to "I need this!" in slap. A genuine improvement.

thanks for the video! do the same rules/steps apply for dual-coil soap bar humbuckers? it is the volume pot which needs to be replaced with a push-pull pot, right?

Try this into a Germanium Fuzz Face for the full benefit of the Parallel mode.. Run another pickup to a clean compression bass amp and we got everything.

There is a quite a bit volume jump in series mode. I wonder if I can wire a resistor in the series mode, to lessen the vol jump a lil bit...
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 4 года назад
Well, that's what makes the P bass so special, the louder, and rich in mids tone of the coils wired in series. In parallel it can be quite thin, it's a fun thing to add, but you'll need to change your eq and volume settings.

The P-bass pickup is a humbucker in either series or parallel configuration. So may I suggest using "twisted pair" wiring which is hum-cancelling. Simply twist hot and cold pairs together. It does not have to be tight, just to ensure they lie alongside each other

Hi Oliver and thanks for this video. Does it work also on a 5 string split pickup? The difference in resistance will make one of the two pickups sounds thinner?

My pickup has an extra ground wire between both coils. It has a white and a black cable connecting the coils instead of one. Is this common? What should I do to the other cable if I want to do this coil splitting?
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 2 года назад
Make sure the white one connects the two coils and split that one. If the black is just grounding the pickups together you can just leave it as it is
@pierremilleret698

I think it's even more interesting ... on a P-J bass 👍🙂
@vinisasso
@vinisasso Год назад
This is cool. No wonder most P basses are wired in series even at the cost of a less defined sound sometimes, but for keeping that low end punch, that's the right way. I'd like to see this working in a PJ bass as well, both a series/parallel switch for the split coil sides, and one for the P and J single signal path. Is this possible? Nice video.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn Год назад
Thanks! Yeah it should be possible. I did something similar with the Di Marzio Jazz pickups. Each pickup is made up of two coils, like a split coil, so it can be wired both in series and parallel

@@OliverTobyn awesome news! I'd like to try it with a cheap but decent bass I have here, but I really know nothing about electronics and never soldered anything in my life, but I will try soldering some test stuff and see if I get the hang, or I will ask a luthier to do that for me.

This has never crossed my mind. Wiring the domino in parallel should give a nice slap tone. You say one is reverse wound?
@rmccain99
@rmccain99 3 года назад
I liked the parallel mode. I think it is a more usable sound. I would just wire it in parallel and leave it that way.
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 3 года назад
Yeah, one is reverse wound, as long as you connect the black two black wires together, and the two whites from each coil (which will be on opposite sides of each other due to the reverse winding) you have a parallel wiring
@ExcessDenied0
@ExcessDenied0 2 года назад
On your parallel wiring, do you have the pickups wired out of phase? Or in phase?

If they're out of phase with each other, simply invert the wires on one of them. Black to hot output and white to ground

You didnt show how the pick-ups go into the guitar. Are they directional? Or do you just put them in any old way?
@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 3 года назад
They are exactly the same, so it doesn't matter. There is only one up, and only one left and right (wires coming out closest to the electronics side) but the two are interchangeable. I'm not sure if dedicated pickups for E and A strings, and D and G strings even exist

@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 3 года назад

@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 3 года назад

@OliverTobyn
@OliverTobyn 3 года назад
