With recent interest and new products on the market, here are some key questions to keep in mind when looking at coil antennas, such as Wolf River Coils, the BuddiStick Pro, the Gabil antenna, Rez Antennas, Slidewinder DX, the new MFJ 1898, and the new Chamelon CHA PRV. This video was not sponsored and I am not an affiliate.

Hi Mike, thanks for your video! For a SOTA activator, the weight is usually the #1 property, i.e. the less to carry up the hill, the better. I experimented myself with a Gabil (also available under other brand names) and made a video about. The whole antenna system, including ground spike, radials, 5m RG-174, etc. weights in total only 740g or 26oz. Have fun and 73, Stephan

Thanks, I’ll check that out! Yup! I recently made a linked 1/4-wave vertical wire for 17m and 20m to use with the SOTABEAMS Carbon 6 mast. I should weigh that and compare it to the WRC 17’ telescoping mast.

Ease of use is probably the biggest factor on all of these coil loaded antennas as I have discovered in my series on those. Awesome intro by the way!

No matter which antenna you buy, that shirt is going to add at least 6db!

So true. I'll need to do WSPR testing with it when I get a Ham Radio Tube one, LOL. Thanks for checking it out, Mike!

I did quite a bit of internet research and ordered the MFJ 1898 yesterday. I'm on a small city lot, very long wires are impossible, so I plan to use this inside the house (I won't have to run outside to change taps or shorten/lengthen the whip part), and possibly combining it with the newest fad: a window screen "radial" system with my brand-new Xiegu X-6100. My biggest problem will be how to keep the cats from chewing the wires. I got some spray "stuff" to put on them in hopes of deterrence. Ken, KA8VLW

Thanks for watching, Ken. I hope you're able to get that setup working well.

I would love to see a video comparison on how stable the tuning of each of these coils are.

I agree. It seems like some of the new antennas out there are either more polished and/or ruggedly engineered then the traditional Wolf River Coil. I hope to try some new ones in the future and see for myself. Thanks for watching!

one of the hidden costs of most of these is an antenna analyzer. you can tune them with an swr meter but it’s much easier with an antenna analyzer. though some of the newer rigs have a built-in swr sweep (xiegu g90, ic-705, etc) so it may not be a problem for some. one question I have is: which is more efficient… ground spike or tripod or is there no noticeable difference?

You’re right about the SWR sweep/chart. It’s much easier with a G90 or ICOM 7300/705 than a Yaesu or a radio without one. I’ve never used one of the spikes (I’ve used a mirror mount on ground rod, but that’s a little different and affects SWR). I think it’s not so much about efficiency with a spike or tripod as it is the setup. I just flew and bringing a spike thru TSA wouldn’t be an option. Some parks won’t allow spikes in the ground either. Tripods can be a little bulkier and take longer to setup, but they might be a little more sturdy in winds. Everything is a compromise with antennas. That said, if you’re going to use elevated radials, they would need to be a resonant length and a few feet up, but the trade off would be less loss than radials on the ground. You could also try to make it a little more directional with elevated radials. But it becomes a more complicated setup. I hope that helps.

Can it be set up as a more efficient center loaded coil? Buddistick, WRC, Slidewinder YES. Unfortunately the design of both the REZ and the Chameleon preclude this option. -W4FJT

Thanks for bringing that up! That's a good point and definitely should be a consideration. I've known about the WRC center loaded coil, but I've never had the opportunity to use that or any other center loaded.

Thanks, I didn’t have the Super Antenna MP1 on my radar. I’ll have to look into that more. Hopefully I can try some of these and do a follow up video.

My loading coils don't have names. Why would anyone buy a vertical with a loading coil when it's so cheap and easy to build one? Not to mention, it's kinda fun. A pool noodle slid over a piece of PVC then wound with tinned wire is practically free. Just add a little alligator clip jumper to tune for the spot on whatever band you want, and come up with a base and the rest of the vertical. I used a used camera tripod and some old bamboo fishing pole pieces. I probably have about $15 into the whole thing, ($10 for the tripod,) and it performs just about as well as ANY other base-loaded vertical does no matter how much you pay for one. Antennas aren't magical. They are just wire or metal tubes, and throwing money at them doesn't change much. If you want noticeably better results, throw money at a tower to hold your antennas. Height actually does make a difference. Brand names don't.

There are plenty of good reasons to buy an antenna versus making one. For me, time is a major consideration, but I do enjoy making them when I can. I think a coil would be a fun project someday. But I'm sure I'd have a hard time matching the quality of some of these, like Rez or Chameleon, LOL. Thanks for watching!

Some people know nothing about the technical aspect of how or why their equipment works....and they don't care to know. I can't imagine being one of those people, but there are many of them.

Thanks! There's so many options out there now, it's hard to keep track. But more options is always a good thing with antennas.
