Although they work well enough, those adjustable coil antennas are a lot of work to setup. So far, the Chelegance antenna is still in the lead as best portable whip in my humble opinion. 73.
I fully agree. No need to mess with a coil, just pull out as much of the whip as needed, which is easy thanks to the markings on the whip. Even though switching to 40m requires unscrewing the whip temporarily to mount the extension coil, it's still easier and quicker to do than adjusting the big coil. That being said, there is currently no 80m option for it, but maybe somebody will come up with an 80m coil, which is probably not impossible to home-brew either.
Hello ... also have the AA-55 ... always in my backbag Have to try the magic carpet instead of the radials ... It's really very efficient Many thanks for sharing / 73
Thomas, I’ve been watching several of your videos lately. I appreciate your unedited format, and great explanations. Your video on the POTA CW exchange was very helpful. One thing I took notice of is that you give and receive a signal report, but you don’t log the information on your notepad. My question is when you later log the contacts, do you just use a 599 for every contact in your logbook regardless of the actual signal report? I’m just getting my feet wet in POTA and I’m curious. Thank you.
This is a pretty common question, so I really need to make a post about it on QRPer.com. Basically, the POTA system doesn't use the signal report information at all, so I don't bother logging it for each contact. The HAMRS app I use on the side simply logs everything 599. I realize that's not perfectly accurate, but with POTA I try to give accurate signal reports to my hunters. If they send a QSL and want the signal report, I often go back and find them in the video. It's actually very, very rare though that anyone really cares for a POTA contact. There's no harm at all in recording accurate signal reports, though! Do what you prefer! :)
Thank you for all the activation video's, I really like the first person video of seeing what you see. What camera set-up are you using? The audio quality is also excellent.

I have been looking for it on several postings but don't see it. There was a mention of a DJI Osmo in one of his older posts. I wonder if that is still it and if it is how he uses it, i.e. on a headband or Velcro'd to his chest somehow. Whatever it is, the picture is good and the audio is also very good.
@@russkeller5747 Not sure if you're reading the same blog post, but the last line under equipment says "Camera: original OSMO Action Camera (the OSMO 3 is the current version) with Sensyne Phone Tripod"
You’re right, I was looking at at older blog postings and looked again after you mentioned it was there. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.@@n1bsbri
You must have an early or later (not sure ) version of the analyzer that uses a SO239, mine has a N connector with the so239 adaptor :( 72 de AI5DD Unless yours has a N connector with the adaptor and my perception is off.
Nice antenna, but verticals with a coil have never tickled my interest. It just seems like too much work every time, especially when antennas like the Chelegance MC-750 exist that handle this much more elegantly with an adjustable whip. Sure, it doesn't offer 80m (out of the box anyways) but I am not sure how well a heavily loaded vertical would do on 80m anyways.
So I'm looking at getting a qrp radio, and with you having experience with the kx2,kx3,705, and tx500, what would you suggest for a guy in to ssb and some Interest in digital. Would you also be able to do an updated video on your setups that you use if time permits thank you for the videos
He recently started a series called "getting to know you" where he presents one of his favourite radios in each episode, which might help you. He also has lots of comparison videos on the radios you mentioned, which might give you a clue which one you'd prefer. Personally, I use the KX2 for SSB-only (though I started studying CW) and it's a great choice, even if you don't work CW. For me the critical features were a built-in battery and an ATU, but you might have different priorities. Especially if you want to do lots of digital, then you might prefer the 705, but you could also combine the KX2 with a Digirig etc.
Difficult question to answer in a comment. As @pcfreak1992 mentioned, I have "Getting to know you" videos on many of those radios and I've also published full reviews of each on QRPer.com and the SWLing Post (Just google the model of the radio and "review" and it'll be in the top results). If you're seriously considering digital, the IC-705 has the benefit of wireless from the radio to your computing device. That's a huge bonus. All of those radios are excellent on SSB. Go for the form factor you like best--you really can't go wrong with any of those.
You might have to reach out to them to ask. I no longer have it here. Great question, though. I suppose there could be a matching unit in the base, but I didn't notice one.
