"The coin has a little 'cabinet friction' and scratches." In other words, it has WEAR. Wear = Not uncirculated. I know, I know, grading standards "have changed." Or maybe I just don't understand gold... I do like this video version of Guess the Grade, especially the running commentary as the coins are shown.

"Obverse is where the grade is earned, reverse is where the grade is lost" now that's a quote.

Amazing video thank you really like these ones, would you be able to tell me more about the 75/25 weighting placed on obv/rev? I always thought it was 50/50. Again amazing video thanks

It's not a hard rule for every coin, but usually collectors focus on the obverse of the coin more than the reverse. The reverse also tends to be busier on most coins and is less prone to showing contact marks. So by weighting the grade in favor of the how the obverse looks, the grading services more closely align the grade with the collector's expectation of quality for the grade. A really bad reverse can kill a coin, but it won't usually add to its grade.

Great info. Where can I go to learn about different coins series. I would like to increase my grading skills. Even though I guessed the 1st two coins correctly, I tend to be alot harder when grading. Thus, grading lower than than the experts. Can you help me?

PCGS has a good primer to coin grading on their website. We also did a PCGS grading challenge video last year at the ANA. Here's a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cuSk3Mrb1uA.html. We will produce more videos in this series throughout the year, expect more insights soon.

Good tips. I undergraded every coin. ha There needs to be more info on the strike of each year.

So lesson learned; condition rarities, grade higher, and are much more forgiving of chatter in the fields and on the high-points, as long as the strike and luster is original..??

If you want us to grade these coins please get them under a light and tilt and turn them.

Probably a mistake to consider values prior to grading.

Can someone explain what he means with 'if the coin was dipped' ?
@8yayo9
@8yayo9 7 лет назад
Goudhaantje I'm not an expert on this but I know there's a solution that you can dip your coins into that sort of cleans the coin without damaging it like any other form of cleaning would

removing the oxide layer or debris?

thx but dipping I thought was a Showstopper for grading. Elektrolyse with alufoil bicarbonaat and alike.
@jeemingsean5703
@jeemingsean5703 7 лет назад
dipping can be eletrolysis but dip in acetone solution is also considered dipping right?

US coins are so bland and simple. Plain and boring. Show other coins from the world, sick of seeing US coinage.
