"Speaking of certain songs not being for everyone, here is Pardesiya! Zara and I were working on a few songs during the lockdown using the remote app I mentioned earlier. Pardesiya was one of them. At the time, it certainly wasn’t made with CS in mind. But when the opportunity came to pick a song, we decided to go with this one. The root of this song is classical because that’s the genre Zara and I are most inspired from. With her training in classical and being open to experimental music gives me the opportunity to work with a very different kind of soundscape. She is certainly one of my most favourite artists to work with - especially with all the music I never release into the world which is made for self-learning purposes. Pardesiya has a classical mid-tempo feel. It’s based on ‘teen-taal’ (16 beats) But the earlier cycles run on a 32 count giving the track a slower departure. It’s all about the vocal phrasing. The earlier phrases take 32-cycles to complete making the song half the cyclic tempo of the proceeding verses. The part from ‘panchi nadiya..’ comes into regular teen taal (16 beats). The melody is inspired from the Raag Bhimpalasi. It has all the notes of a pentatonic minor except a sharpened 6th added on the descent. This allows for a lot of chords that give the song a bit of a ‘smokey’ blues flavour! As I had mentioned in an earlier post, pardesiya in spiritual terms actually refers to a loved one from beyond our realm of existence. This song is all about that relationship. It’s the longing of reunion and how separation can make everything beautiful seem a bit bland. Also, it is important to mention that these slow tempo songs tend to be a bit longer than ’normal’. Something I noticed in eastern classical music was how the slower parts of the performances were much longer than the faster/drut, end portions of the performances. This makes sense if one understands that it will take a lot less time to sing a passage at a higher tempo than a lower one - just that with eastern classical music, the slow tempos are really slow. We are talking about from as low as 5 BPM to about 60 BPM! So yes, this song and another classically inspired track coming up later this season are a bit long. But please don’t kill us for it. If this song were to stay true to the original art form, it might have been 40-60 minutes long but we have condensed it to just 9 minutes." Rohail Hyatt's facebook post.

Her voice, when it came, hit me like a tsunami of molasses, swirling, creamy and tempting. Smooth, velvety and teasing. Strong yet appearing deceptively fragile. I don't understand a word, yet I could feel that longing, pleading and yearning. Took me a while to realize that there was actually some fine jazzy music accompanying this voice!! Superb combination guys!!

This season we can hear the original voice of artists like how they struggle in the lower notes it is quite refreshing. I don’t know may be that’s how it is always but i am noticing it this time. This song is like a lullaby

Very very mature stuff. Everything is on perfect spot. Those who are saying strings were best for coke studio, yes they brilliantly produced all the seasons and attracted so many types of audience to one platform but still they couldn't pull such soul in any of their tracks. This composition, vocals and arrangement is not piece of cake for anyone to produce. Kudos to Rohail Hayyat for such taste in music. I can totally relate to its vibe. Keep it up boss. You have a very matured fan base.
