As a British person who discovered Pakistani music about a year ago it definitely has a special place in my heart as each song takes you on such a journey. My favourite so far has to be Dam Mastam by the great Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The vocals left me speechless but the whole composition is just musical storytelling

It's not Pakistani music. Rather it's Indian music widely practiced by these great Pakistani musicians. India and Pakistan have the common cultural heritage, but dividing the country wouldn't change the origin and name of Indian music.

There is no thing as Pakistani Music its actually called Hindustani Classical. The whole subcontinent has two school of music - Hindustani Classical and Carnatic Music

The Sarangi can, it’s fretless, uses bowed gut stings, and is played with the nail/cuticle allowing you to do exactly the type of gamak you hear in this singing.

Well the poetry they are singing is a spiritual.. But Don't compare them with messenger because they aren't. Messenger were noble people like Noah, Ibraham, Moses, Jesus And Muhammad peace be upon them all. These 2 and us are just part of the nation of last messenger & prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h)

I've heard other reactors focus on the technical aspects but that is not the true beauty of this song. You picked up on it in the very first minute how it seems like a dialogue between the singers and the God Almighty. It is the total surrender and complete devotion that sets this apart from most other songs. You are so right that there is music and then there is this.

Just felt like commenting this for all who don't understand the lyrics.. "Chaap tilak sab cheenii re mose naina milaake" It somewhat translates to.. 'you have taken or snatched from me, everything, all the traces of my identity, by looking in my eyes/locking eyes with me(naina milaake) :)

The amazing thing is, this wasn't even supposed to be the final version. It was the first practice recording session, and it turned out so good that the producer decided to use this instead of any other takes. Btw Abida Parveen is a legend!

The poem is about 750 years old. But every singer makes his own arrangement of the song. This arrangement is new and unique.

Abida Parveen is indeed a living legend just like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Rahat has also gained the same status as of his uncle due to his amazing vocals, both here are singing a poem of 14 century sufi poet Amir Khusro

This is not an interpretation but a poem. The poem was written by amir khusro. Later the poem was sung as song.(Sufi music). I love it .. I do .. so pure ❤️

Frank, I don't know if I enjoyed Rahat and Abida more or your shocked reaction to the song. You are right this style of singing is an attempt to connect with God. It is Sufi music and it has its roots in the mystical aspect of Islam. There are videos of little Rahat sitting next to his uncle, Nusret, practicing for hours. So, it is a technique that was perfected in over 40 years or so. It is quite difficult to do. I am not sure if Rahat is training another family member. This art form can die out if not passed down the generations.

@@legendofnothing1 I love rahat but looking at Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, rahat inherited range quite well alingwith sargam...but when it comes to variation he only inherited 10% in my view....anyways Amjad got variations, range and above all he had this voice which is best suited for Qawali singing

Nusrat was Jeff Bukleys Elvis, he loved him and rightly so. Abida Parveen is a female version of Nusrat man, she may not go as high as Rahat but she puts emotions in songs like no other, you should check her out more top, Will Smiths wife Jada Smith is a massive fan of her too along with million sin this region. Please react to Tajdare-e-Haram by Atif Aslam from COke Studios he is a very talented singer too with songs of multiple genres not a Qawali singer but great one. Coke Studios has alot of these Sufi songs also turn on subtitles as they contribute alot to these song and Coke Studios have it on almost all songs.
