Really interesting product - I wonder if it uses a aeration stone in line with the beverage... could be interesting to try and force carb your next brew with it?

Tangentially related. I've got a cold brew coffee mead going right now. Half gallon of coffee, 3.25 lbs of honey, 1 tsp of bourbon vanilla extract, and 1 cinnamon stick, and water to ~1 gallon (1.123 OG). Tasty. Just waiting for the yeast to flocculate, then I'll rack it onto some rum soaked oak chips, and let it age for a while. It's a bit hot, considering it's something like 14.5% ABV. The bits of coffee bean I couldn't filter out made for an interesting fermentation, as the CO2 had persistent nucleation points. Foamy.

My 8$ nitro hack is taking cold brew and pumping the shit out of it in a french press until it changes color and becomes harder to pump. Pours a cream color and cascades like crazy, the head is a little intense. Tastes nearly identical, albeit one glass at a time.

If u don't wanna buy a burr grinder, which isn't that necessary for cold brew, I recommend shaking the coffee grinder while grinding. That helps a lot

Great video, as always! Would have loved if you got your coffee from a local roaster though. It usually costs a bit more than Amazon, but you know the roast date and if you pick a good roaster you'll also get information about the origin and can make sure that it's fair trade. If you know that you'll do a big dose of coffee they can also grid it to the right size for you. They'll have a good bur grinder that will give you a cleaner taste profile and better extraction. Cheers!

Good point. Amazon beans were for convenience but yes would be good to look at some local options.

I just pick up my keg and shake it and then after 3 or 4 pours you don’t need to do that to get the nitro cascade. (10L keg, 30 psi nitro at 1 degree Celsius)

Like others have said, burr grinder is the way to go for consistency. Look for local beans rather than Amazon :) they probably taste better and are roasted recently. Also weigh your beans for extra consistency for repeatability.

@@TheHomebrewChallenge Baratza Encore is a pretty widely known entry level burr grinder. Baratza also has pretty good customer service for any future replacement parts. Seattle coffee gear and whole latte love are good online retailers for coffee related items.

I do not need a nitro coffee tap, however, I would love a nitro beer tap. . .Maybe I need to remind my wife that she loves Guinness draught and that I can make a beer and serve a beer just like it if i only had the equipment.

I'm curious why you used mason jars to brew the coffee and not just do it all in the corny keg with a hop sock?

A burr grinder will give you more uniform coffee grounds so they all extract at the same rate which will give you smoother coffee 🙂

Agreed! Definitely a worthy investment. I have one made by Cuisinart and it works great. Has many different ranges from course to fine and in between. Definitely invest in one Martin if you’re passionate about it like you are.

How long is the coffee good for under nitrogen in a keg setup like that? Like when would you dump it to do a fresh batch? After a week? 2 weeks? Just curious. Awesome video.
@TheHomebrewChallenge
@TheHomebrewChallenge 3 года назад
I’ve not gone longer than 2 weeks but only because the keg is empty by then 🙂. It should keep a good while given that it is in a closed environment not exposed to oxygen.

You forget to talk about the afterburner in the installation part. Or did you don’t put it in the line?
@Unsub-Me-Now
@Unsub-Me-Now 3 года назад
The afterburner is for longer beverage lines. I am sure there are instructions as to how long a beverage line needs to be before using the afterburner. In Martin's case, his lines didn't need the afterburner.
@TheHomebrewChallenge
@TheHomebrewChallenge 3 года назад
Right. I did install the afterburner initially but that was giving too much agitation to the coffee. My system just wasn’t big enough to need it.
