For a decade, The Golden State Killer stalked and murdered Californians in the dead of night, leaving entire communities afraid to turn out the lights. The sadistic predator disappeared in 1986, hiding in plain sight for the next thirty years in middle-class suburbia.
In 1994, when cold case investigator Paul Holes came across the old file, he swore he would unmask the Golden State Killer and finally give these families some closure. Twenty-four years later, Holes fulfilled that promise, identifying a 73-year-old former cop named Joseph J. DeAngelo. Headlines blasted from the U.S. to Europe: one of America’s most prolific serial killers was in custody.
That case launched Holes’s career into the stratosphere, turning him into an icon in the true crime world with television shows like The DNA of Murder with Paul Holes and America’s Most Wanted, and the podcast Jensen & Holes: The Murder Squad. Everyone knows Paul Holes, the gifted crime solver with a big heart and charming smile who finally caught the Golden State Killer. But until now, no one has known the man behind it all, the person beneath the flashy cases and brilliant investigations.
In this memoir, Holes takes us through his memories of a storied career and provides an insider account of some of the most notorious cases in contemporary American history, including the hunt for the Golden State Killer, Laci Peterson’s murder, and Jaycee Dugard’s kidnapping. This is also a revelatory profile of a complex man and what makes him tick: the drive to find closure for victims and their loved ones, the inability to walk away from a challenge-even at the expense of his own happiness.
Holes opens up the most intimate scenes of his life: his moments of self-doubt and the impact that detective work has had on his marriage. This is a story about the gritty truth of crime-solving when there are no flashbulbs and “case closed” headlines. It is the story of a man and his commitment to cases and people who might have otherwise been forgotten.

Could of got caught in 77 if Sacramento Sheriff Duane Lowe had not nixed a sit down with Visalia Police. Sacramento DA had the crime lab and the CSI folks would have looked at the evidence and seen the similar factors. Bone Head Sacramento cops theorized that different shoe sizes were connected in Visalia differed from Sacramento attacks. Knowing full well this was common among garden variety cat burglars to wear extra socks to increase shoe size. D'Angelo was the Cordova Meadows burglar of 71-73 and these crimes matched similar to evidence to Visalia. The taking of or ripping of family photos, laying out of women's underwear, placing chairs near open windows for quick escape, turning off heating/air conditioner were all similar and were never fully vetted. But big egos, politics, allowed a killer highly skilled in crime scene techniques to avoid capture.

It seems like divine intervention that Paul ran across the file of GSK and with his background and tenacity was the perfect person to crack this case. So grateful for him.

I remember his police boss saying in an interview that De Angelo was not a very good policeman and was always been spoken to. He had trouble taking directions from others
@Michelina22
Great interview, I still think Michelle deserves more attention for her input in the Golden State killer, all in all they’ve all done a great job 👏 ✝️

The question about criminals watching was kind of answered by the idaho case. Everyone makes mistakes

Deangelo was a very spiteful man. He did not accept people that challenged him. When people made him angry he remembered and he retaliated against them. He was smart and patient and relentless in his pursuit of targets but he had the self control to abort an attack when circumstances were not favorable to his success. I believe he did not stop in 1986, rather, I believe he changed his MO so law enforcement would not link the cases and disposed of his victims in locations where they would not be found or if they were found it would be so delayed that DNA was not collectable.
