Here is a review of all my cold creams
Please remember this is just something I enjoy doing, skin care is deeply personal so I am not saying everyone should do it. I am just sharing my experimental results.

I can relate to making/doing things that you just enjoy even if they might not be the most handy or beneficial or efficient. Using stuff you made just brings a joy that few things compare to!

Appreciate the review. I was curious how much "slip" would be left on the skin depending on oil used. As for the face powder, it must look different in person versus on camera. It looked quite lovely on screen. A slight glowing appearance, and not too caky or powdery translated through filming. Quite a finished look. The lip color is lovely! Please continue sharing your insights/experiences with homemade products. These videos are quite informative and delightful.

I am so glad you enjoyed it. I really like the cold creams and do not mind the oiliness but I can imagine it would be a bit much for some people. The facepowder is not great close up but that is nice that it looks ok on film. Thank you.

I agree, I thought you looked lovely with the soft powdery look and the lip colour is gorgeous. I make my own lip balm using oil, beeswax and a tiny portion of lipstick, cheating I know, would love to try alkanet and ochre...maybe another video? Please 🙂

I didn’t start wearing face cream daily until I was about 25. I have changed it frequently over the years, especially during pregnancy and since the menopause, I have found you need to experiment with different types, until you find one that suits your current needs. I have never considered making my own, so I have been fascinated by your experiments.

I am glad you found this interesting, I am sure if I tried I could find a bought moisturiser I liked. I did used to use the Boots Cold Cream which was very cheap, and came in a nicely shaped large plastic pot, and then when they changed the pot shape I did not like the pot as much and started making my own. I am still using the nicely shaped pots to keep things in.

Thank you for you video! It was very interesting, also from a pharmacist‘s perspective, how long you think those keep etc. And also from a kind of zero waste perspective and crocheting make up wipes, cool!
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie 2 года назад
I am so pleased that as a pharmacist you are not horrified by what I am up to. I have kept and used my cold creams for for over a year. They keep well with the beeswax and oil as a preservative. The sealed container is better than the antique one but they still keep fine in the open ones, you just cant be certain that they are unexposed to the elements. I really enjoy trying to be less wasteful although there are some products that I do not have as much luck with, home made deodorant was not great, but still an interesting experiment.
@dottiewi661
@dottiewi661 2 года назад
Well, you seem to have quite an experimental approach to your testing, and looking for how long the creams keep etc, which I like. And you know what looks/smells bad. In an official capacity I would advise anyone to make batches of cream that last for a month at a time😊. If you want, I can look up natural preservatives for you, for the water phase. Spontaneously, sorbic acid/or its potassium salt come to mind. (This would obviously exclude parabens, for example)
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie 2 года назад
Thank you, Sorbic Acid sounds very easy to use and is potassium salt also called Potassium thiocyanate? or Potassium Chloride? there are so many types of Potassium I like the stuff that looks like brown powder, goes purple when you put it in water and you can use to distress fabric and garments on stage and screen.

Reminds me of Noxema that I used when I first started wearing make up, as a young teen, in the early 80's ( yes, I am " old"), to remove make up. My sister is 11 years older than I, she used vaseline to remove her eye makeup, and Noxema to remove the rest. I could not bring myself to use the vaseline on my eyes, it grossed me out. The Noxema, left on, had that thick mask effect. Like Lucy😆... I use a thick grainy salve with lavender on my feet, at night. It stays oily for a while, but works better than anything else than I've tried. I've enjoyed your cold cream experiments. 😀
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie 2 года назад
I do have a tin called beauty balm which I think is just vaseline in reality and that was sold as good for breaking down make up with its Natural oily quality, which it certainly does although really I bought its because it was a pretty tin. Your salve sounds great, I forgot to take any cold cream with me to my work last week ( I stay away all week) but I still had a little pot of hand salve there that I made which was a bit oilier but still worked on my face at a pinch. I am glad you enjoyed my experiments. Thank you.

Thank you for the review of the cold cream video that you made earlier, I really enjoyed both and am looking for a simple 3 ingredient moisturiser. I have rosacea and dry sensitive skin and go through phases of making my own (Rosemary Gladstar Perfect Cream is a good one to try) and then finding I need something lighter in the summer so have used synthetic emulsifyers and preservatives in my creams. Its not long though before I find I'm reacting to them and wanting lovely beeswax again. I keep goats and would love to 'design' a goat milk face cream.

Never made face powder but hair powder colored with cocoa and activated charcoal until it matches my light brown hair. Did try making face cream from beef fat. That one was great. Yes a bit greasy but I only used it at night for a nice heavy night moisturizer. It really didn't smell like beef at all.

I wear makeup every day. The cold cream you made looks like a winner for makeup removal; I wash off my makeup with Dove soap, or a face wash, designed to remove makeup. Your cold cream is much quicker! I think it will be fun making my own cold cream. Hmm...hunting down the oils and wax might take some time. xoxo's Sandie🤗

I am so glad you liked it. I make a lot of soaps and other cosmetics so I buy them from suppliers of such things. But if you only want small quantities then some health food shops or specialist food shops sell oils and rose water. I dont know where you are situated as to finding things locally.

Residue on the skin is a plus in my box because it's an effective barrier layer to heat/cold and pollutants. Like another commenter, my acne cleared up within weeks of starting with straight olive oil after years of nothing much working. For olive oil soap going slimy, it needs to be kept out of water and only touch water when you're actually using it (ie. make sure your soap dish drains well and don't dip it in the bath).

Really enjoyed this review, actually all of your 'toiletry concoction' videos. I have used apricot kernel oil as my moisturiser for decades - my skin is very dry and sensitive and 'pharmaceutically produced' seem to consistently bring me out in rashes. In recent years I've started making cold creams with apricot oil (rather than almond oil - I'm allergic to nuts) as I wanted something I could pop into my bag for moisturising straight after swimming. And now the dreaded peri-menopause is upon me I'm using it religiously on face, neck and hands...
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie 2 года назад
Thank you I will have to give the apricot kernel oil a try that sounds very nice and nourishing. I also have some rosehip seed oil which I also very good for dry skin and I keep meaning to try that.

how odd that apricot kernals which are a kind of nut related to almonds don't upset your skin . lucky you

So much fun! I love cold creams as removers. And I think I have most of those ingredients in my soaping stash! Thank you for sharing this. If you fancy trying to make your favorite coconut cream again try using fractionated coconut oil instead of the more solid version. It is liquid at room temp and would probably behave better. Plus it shouldn't cause the clogging issues either. My mother in law and sister in law use it straight up on their really dry skin. Love you Stancey!

Interesting! I wonder how the grainy one would be if it was made in a double boiler like the other. I sew washable face wipe things out of terrycloth and flannel. I find that they wash easier than crochet, I made myself a little netting bag to keep the used ones in and when I do a 60 C wash I toss the bag in too. One round of finding little cotton rounds in my pillowcases and clothes was enough for me
@stanceymackenzie
@stanceymackenzie Год назад
Hello, the first recipe can certainly be made in a double boiler there are definitely versions of it from the era made that way, I just like the basic utility of the recipe. I really should try making some more washable soft wipes but I’m still just wearing very little makeup so the are not used regularly

Very interesting! Thank you. I am lazy, so I will continue using straight oil as my cleanser and moisturizer. Lazy, and also, it has been the best thing to combat my acne. Seriously. I stopped using any cleanser, water only, and that helped. Then I learned about washing with oil and never looked back. I've used olive, coconut and jojoba oil. Olive is handy and does a good job. Coconut smells nice, and as I live in the subtropics is liquid most of the year. recently got the jojoba and it is my favorite. But if I get my hands on some beeswax I may try this for a lark. I wonder if the rose water at arabic grocery stores is the same thing? Probably.
