John from www.growingyourgreens.com/ goes on a field trip to RCW Nursery in Houston Texas. In this episode John will share with you a handful of cold hardy avocado trees that can withstand down to 15 degrees. In this episode you will also discover some edible vegetables that are perfect for growing in the summer. In addition you will learn John's favorite variety of tomato as some of his favorite herbs. Finally you will learn how to best plant a grafted avocado tree and why it may not be a good idea to plant them from seed.

To all the critics of cold-hardy Avocado trees: There are a few cold-hardy Avocado trees growing in London, England that are producing Avocados. These trees survived the cold snap of 2012 that reached down to -10°C (14°F). London has the same climate as Vancouver, Canada. Search out and read the article "They're Already Harvesting Large, Ripe Avocados in London, England. Why Not In Vancouver, Canada?"

Hi, I have been working with these trees for years. Avocados are very susceptible to phytopthera and other root rots. IMO, they should not be planted in the ground until they have formed true bark. If the trunk is green, they should be potted up until they form true bark. Your soil can also be improved to prevent root rots by working in compost and planting basil for a year before planting the avocado out. They will be quite happy in a 15-gal until they are a bit matured.

I put my cold hardy avocado in pots . . . it didn't take long for them to start dying from the tip down . . . I tried all the company's food for avocado, planted in draining soil used for citrus like they said - everything and all of them died the exact same death . . . will I ever be able to grow them???

I've invested in the "Joey" variety avocado. A mature tree is hardy down to I think 14-18 degrees. Since I am in North Florida I have seen 16 degrees. I found it surprisingly at Lowes. Also found a mango tree there. They are both grafted. I am also growing "Sweet & Neat" from seed purchased from Park's . So far they are short, stocky and very healthy looking. I have three plants in their own pots.

I will have a specific video on my views on Oxalates and other naturally occuring "toxins" in leafy greens. That being said, certain greens have higher oxalate content than others. If you are concerned, stick to the lower ones. Personally, I rotate my greens, so I never eat ALOT of any ONE type, but a little of MANY types. Also grow low oxalate varities - ie: spinach comes to mind. In my seed catalog video I share a low oxalate spinach variety.

30+ year organic gardener here. John, your blog is the first one that has ever encouraged me to post a comment. All of your advice is first-rate. I love greens and consume green smoothies, but I am concerned about the high oxalate content of most greens. My wife has to watch her oxalate levels. Any suggestions? BTW, I have dozens of Growums boxes thanks to you. The only problem has been draining the water after 3 inches of rain fell in one day. It took a couple hours. Happy Vacation.

If you are watching this video and live in Houston or near Houston, please check out JRN nursery off 249. I found this nursery by accident when trying to order a fruit tree from Pine Island Nursery in Florida. Pine Island is a huge wholesale/retail nursery. They said "Why don't you buy this tree in Houston". I said that there were no places. They gave me the name of JRN. JRN buys truck loads of fruit trees from Pine Island. I was quite surprised since I thought I knew all the nurseries around here. JRN has every variety of avocados, mangos, citrus, etc, etc, etc. Since then, I guess I have bought over 20 fruit trees from her. She is so knowledgeable and easily likable.

I live in Vancouver, BC, CANADA. My friend has been growing 2 Avocado trees in his backyard for 3 years. He planted them BY ACCIDENT. He tossed a bunch of Avocado seeds into his compost pile 3 years ago (they were regular Hass seeds). Many seeds sprouted. When winter came, they all died, except 2 of them. These Avocado trees have survived -8C (18F) at least 2 or 3 times since then. There are also Avocado trees growing in London, England that are producing avocados. Yes, they are rare. But there are videos online of these trees. These trees survived the 2012 cold snap that reached down to -10C (14F). The London trees are likely resulted from accidental plantings that "took." Anybody can grow a cold-hardy Avocado tree. Just plant LOTS OF SEEDS. When winter comes, most will die. But the ones that survive will be the cold-hardy ones. Search out and read the article: "How To Grow a Cold-Hardy Avocado Tree--OUTDOORS--In Vancouver, CANADA."

Can you tell me if there are varieties of avocado that are resistant to root knot nematodes? I have two I grew from store bought avocados that have both developed these. It took alot of time to get 2 out of 10 seeds to sprout and although pouring boiling water seems to have reduced the size of the galls (and hopefully killed the nematodes) I don't know if these 2 are going to make it. The nematodes made it up the main root and the boiling water may have shocked the plants because leaves are wilting now.

I bought a small plant on Amazon. They put it in a plastic bag and sent it to me in the mail. The packaging was not great, but I got it in a pot and out on the sun ... with the "rock dust minerals" ;-) and it seems to be surviving OK so far ... for maybe a week so far. I not sure whether to recommend the seller and it was expensive too, but I got one and I think it's going to live!

tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and some other are tender perennials. if you cut them short and dig up to bring inside they'll grow again the next year. there is something about hibernating them in cool dark areas so a basement might be perfect storage for them over winter.

@madcrabber1113 8 лет назад

@TheAnantaSesa
@TheAnantaSesa 8 лет назад
I'm not the source of that information. just repeating but I believe it because I HAVE kept tomato plants alive all winter only to have a late frost kill them after putting them back out. they were doing well at a whole year and some change old. my eggplants were doing well this year well past the end of fall till sub freezing temperatures nipped them even in the greenhouse. it makes sense that they might be tender perennial since those 2 lasted so long. the article I am referencing cited that they are all in the same class of plant. Jon, the reason why your avocado wasnt fruiting was probably because it lacked a pollinator. you are going to need to get an alternate flowering type. A or B. which ever you have, get the other. Then you will get full production.

When I lived in San Miguel de Allende (Mexico), which is at 6000 feet altitude we had some of those avocados (the edible skin ones) growing on our patios. Every few years we would get a frost and all the vegetation would die, but not the roots, so all the plants grew back in the spring, including the avocado trees. So maybe these are more cold-hardy than they say.

@dennisg4053
@dennisg4053 9 лет назад
Gazzasore .... Simply not true! It all depends upon temps. Each individual flower may exhibit that behavior, but OTHER flowers on the same tree will be available IF temps are in the right range. Colder temps cause this behavior to be more extreme. Avocados (flowers) grown in the Tropics don't behave in the same manner. Even with over 40,000 flowers, less than 400 fruits will actually set, even in perfect conditions.

GREAT Vid John, although i might add that there are green-skinned and black-skinned avocados, both skins edible, the problem with these avocados(here they're called creoles), is they ripen very fast, so this variety is not the best for comercial growers, like the Haas variety(the one with the bumpy, non-edible skin). And the skins on the creoles is reputed in aiding the expulsion of parasites from our stomachs(if we have stomach parasites), thumbs up John!! =)
