I saw Julie speak at a CRFG conference. It was 2000; the Year of the Avocado. Subsequently, I spoke with her at the Green Scene in Fullerton and the Avocado Festival in La Habra Heights. She was very informative and generous with her knowledge. Thank you for posting this! Great questions and dialogue!

I pic my jim bacon in late fall. The fruit is elongated and the flesh is smooth. They do sometimes turn brown on the bottoms. My tree is 4 years old and 12 ft in height. I keep it pruned

I appreciate the content you are sharing, and it is motivating as well. I took over the orchard that was once my parents and am replanting fruit trees. I live in La Habra Heights and have seen so many fine orchards disappear since the 1960's. Can you recommend any nurseries that have the rarer varieties of avocados? Louies in Riverside is good. Any others you know of?
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for your kind words. Sad to hear about those orchards disappearing. The history of La Habra Heights is really interesting. What rare varieties are you looking for? I’m growing a few rare varieties myself and I go to your area sometimes. Email me if you’re interested ajsgarden123@gmail.com

I live in San Diego county, near Escondido, from what I can tell Bacon (mostly Mexican lineage) trees ripen a little bit before Fuerte, about the same as Zutano. Stewart probably ripens the same. Not my interview, but i would add that Pinkerton an A bloomer, needs a B polinizer or you may not get any fruit. Good job!
@AJTheGraftMan

Hi- Great video! I was wondering what varieties she would recommend for the Bay Area. I live in Sunset Zone 10a, at about elevation 900 (lower Oakland hills). I have a Lamb in my yard that seems to be growing well (12’ tall) but I get very little production (2-3 avocados a year). I was thinking of a Sharwil (Type B) to help with pollination, but not sure if it’s too cold in the evenings for that variety. Thanks!

Hi AJ nice interview. Did you happen to pick her brain if she has any awareness of the popenoe collection beyond Nabal an Nimlioh. Those are the great missing links that would be awesome to track down!!!

Mr. Aj, I live in a colder USDA zone 9b. Do u have any recommendations for any avocado trees for my yard. I have a Gem and a Mexicola Grande already. They made it thru last winter, with the coldest night being 25.9°. I heard miss Julie mention Stewart, I believe it's a Mexican variety and cold hardy. I never tasted the fruit. I am thinking of 2 more trees. Fuerte is probably to big of a tree .
@AJTheGraftMan
@AJTheGraftMan 7 месяцев назад
Good question. I’m thinking Bacon and Reed (cold hardier than many people think)

Great information, *however*, it should probably be strongly prefaced that this information is with respect to growing in California. A lot of these varieties will behave very differently when grown in other areas (e.g. Florida).
