Cold Outside? Your Sheep and Goats Are Warmer Than You Think! In this video, Tim talks to us about why it can be dangerous to keep our sheep and goats "too warm" and "too protected" from the weather during the winter months. If you aren't shearing your sheep in the fall, you probably want to start now! Have healthier sheep and goats without stressing yourself out about cold temperatures.
If you are looking for a shearer, you need to contact Colin at Yankee Clippers. If Colin can't help you out, he can get you in touch with someone who can. Check them out at www.yankeerockfarm.com

-45°C here in Albert's this past winter, deep bedding and lots of hay, and my goats were just fine! Even have a 3-sided shed. Just gave them a grain ration to keep their body condition up while it was so cold.

You are so full of it!! Full of great information. I really appreciate all the time YOU spend on MY goat raising education. THANK YOU Tim and, anyone else that helps, or sacrifices time to make these videos and maintain and add all the valuable information on the website. You all have really helped us have the confidence to go for it. We've officially started our herd of Kiko, Boer, and a couple crosses, this fall. Thanks again.

I’m very surprised you don’t have 500+ thousand subscribers

Getting a lot of subscribers when it comes to livestock can have a lot more to do with telling people what they want to hear. Lots of people like to hear, “it’s super easy” and “you’re going to make a lot of money”. We don’t do that. Thanks for watching and for the kind comments. Our numbers slowly increase and hopefully, this will continue!

I have hair sheep so I'm good. Question, feeding corn and will add roasted rolled soybeans should I or do I need to add medicated ultra lamb/ram feed or will that put the protein count to high or just be wasting my money? thanks for another informative show

Hello, Gerald! Thanks for watching our videos and for leaving a comment. The good news is, the Foundation Feed Ultra Lamb and Ram feed has 40% protein so a little goes a long way. Your rolled and roasted soybean meal has at least 40% protein as well which allows you to mix and match to increase overall feed protein or use both for a protein content that is a little higher. If you have an animal you are trying to add some weight to (and you want to keep things as simple as possible) I would consider the following formula (per animal): 1 pound cracked corn 4oz. scoop (provided with your foundation feed) of ultra feed 4oz. scoop of rolled & roasted soybeans This formula will give you an 18% protein mix and should help to improve body condition. Feed at a rate of 1 pound per head per day. If you have animals you are just trying to maintain, I would consider alternating the following formulas every other day (per animal): 1 pound cracked corn 4oz. scoop ultra feed Then... 1 pound cracked corn 4oz scoop rolled & roasted soybeans 1 Tbs ultra mineral Both of these mixes will have around 14% protein (13.6%) and are far superior to generic 12% feed without breaking the bank. Feed at a rate of 1 pound per head per day. If you have a sick, undernourished, or weak animal that needs some fast attention I would consider the following formula (per animal): 1/2 pound generic 12% feed (check to make sure it is labeled safe for your animal) 1/2 pound cracked corn 4oz ultra feed 4oz rolled & roasted soybeans This will give you a 19.25% protein feed and should aid in adding bodyweight as quickly as possible without putting unnecessary strain on the digestive system or kidneys. Feed at a rate of 1-2 pounds per head per day. Introduce this feed slowly starting at around 1/2 pound per head per day and work your way up to 2 pounds over a week or so to help prevent scours or upset stomach.

So I live in Michigan similar weather, so a 3 sided barn will work? good to know, do you put individual bays inside the barn or one big open space? And thank you for all the knowledge sharing.

Hello! Thank you for watching our videos and thanks for taking the time to leave a message. Be mindful of which side of your 3 sided structure is facing the wind. Best way to set up the structure is to have the opening facing south. In order to keep out weather and wind, you will want to avoid having the opening facing north or west.
