When the Japanese occupied China in the late 1930s, the resistance was often not armed with firearms. The soldiers had 2 grenades per fighter and a Chinese war sword. The officer could have a Chinese replica of the Mauser pistol. That's how they stormed the trenches. It's hard to believe! This is one of the last fighting swords in the world. The basic idea is to counter a bolt-action rifle with a bayonet. When I see such a sword, I definitely think of Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek, but not films about kung fu and the Middle Ages.
Yes, I've seen photos of them carrying these...chops thru cheap katanas and break them in half. When I look at this, I see ancient convicts kneeling and ready to be beheaded ..
Better known as Chinese Broadsword, called "DaDao" in Chinese language, translated as Big Knife! Lynn Thompson is right, in WW2, this thing were widely used by Chinese soldiers. They fought Japanese soldiers wielding Katana in duels, they just smash thru and break their cheap katanas in half, no match! It's also an executioner tool in ancient times for beheading convicts.
Respectfully, “as close to a light saber!”This sword has always been my favorite. I would like to own and polish this-practice cutting with this. The artwork on the scabbard leather is very pleasant for display.
Lynn Thompson has always been my favorite knife designer/ reviewer. Cold Steel videos have sold me a few knives over the years. GI Tanto is an absolute beast! Kobun makes a killer neck knife option. Hold Out 3" is an all time favorite of mine. Kudu is just plain cool 😎. Love my Cold Steel knives and have many more purchases planned for the future.
Upped their game? lmao! Have you seen GSMs 2022 lineup with only 3-4 interesting products? LT Spartan S35VN, LT Leatherneck Bowie, Drifter G10 S35VN and AD 10 Tanto S35VN. The Chinese War Sword and the eventually now disc. Chinese War Sword Machete are no new products ! Lynn designed them with his old team some years ago...
The Chinese War Sword being compared to a lightsaber is something I’ve never considered. If I ever get one, I’m anodizing the blade purple and will study the force.
@Your Wife's Boyfriend Nah. Don't be fooled. And stop lieing to yourself. It was the price. That gas station knife price, with that premium knife quality. Lynn is a humble - babbling idiot, who struggles to finish what he said in the first place. It wasn't his "marketing style". It was his quality knife to price ratio. And now Cold Steel is charging more than ever for their foreign made knives. Lynn kept it in perspective. This used to be $160ish. New Cold Steel is pushing $250 for this same 1095 sword. They are ridiculous. Cold Steel is no more a "big premium - budget friendly" company. They expect ultra premium prices for the same overseas manufacturing that Lynn provided. At that point it's better to buy something else.
@Doe Jon you’re not entirely wrong, they definitely have been cranking up their prices on their newer releases. Personally speaking though, I haven’t seen any price or quality change with their older products. I do buy through Amazon, which may explain the lack of changing prices though. But I recently picked up a recon 1 spear point for about $90 on Amazon and it’s got the new logo and still has amazing fit and finish.
@@elijahlovejoy1717 They will continue to raise the price. They just bought a company & have profits to be made. Amazon is pretty much a secondary party vendor so that doesn't even count. I've got great deals on rare/new/ discontinued knives through Amazon. That doesn't reflect where CS is going with prices though.
@Doe Jon Yeah for sure, good point to be made there. They will most likely continue to raise prices as time goes on. Personally I still want the company to succeed, but not with this new Walmart blister pack mentality. I personally refuse to buy anything from the 2022 lineup. At this point two things can happen with this company, they’ll see sales drop on their new releases and hopefully go back to making the classic cold steel fan favorite products. Or more likely they’ll end up continuing down the blister pack rabbit hole, which will suck but is what happens in situations like these. At the end of the day, time will tell.
I’ve always wanted a cold steel sword- especially the Chinese war sword. Keep up the good work! And Stickman- remember to tell GSM the whole reason everyone loves Cold Steel is because of hard use weapons, XL folders and stuff that every kid wanted but wasn’t allowed to have haha
Great video and information. I had no clue about the history of this sword. I love to see that Cold Steel is single-handedly keeping the 1” Manila rope industry alive.
Yes, the Cold Steel Dadao war sword is very sharp and very well balanced. I have 12 different dadaos, including some very authentic types, but the Cold Steel Dadao is my go to sword in case the world goes into apocalyptic scenario. Good Work, Lynn Thompson.
Can you fence with it yourself? I mean it has some Chinese martial art forms where you can use it, it was used in the army but still it is a glorified butcher knife. Kinda. It is a cutting weapon, the good thing is that it's blade is so wide from blade to the back of the sword that it can be also used to parry greatly stabs and cuts lol Katana doesn't have that.
Avru Vimtu. Yes, I've been practicing fencing with the Dadao for over 12 years. It is very effective but must have good body dynamics to use effectively. I've been able to vvery cleaning severe a wild hogs head with one swing so it is absolutely powerful. Yes, it will continue to be my apocalyptic blade for all reasons.
I love all of y’all’s machete style swords and use them all the time for all kinds of different things. I have chopped a 16 inch cedar tree down and split it up for firewood easily with the Chinese broad sword machete took maybe an hour from the time I found the tree till I had a fire started from it using that sword
They contacted me as they said. What a wonderful group of people/family. Looking forward to more content and what's to come... New owners are awesome 👍 couldn't be any better ...
Absolutely love this sword been wanting it since the first time I saw it not the easiest to come by wish I can have it in my collection looks like a beast
That looks like a military Dadao, awesome blade. Id love to see more chinese weapons from cold steel, especially the Baguadao and maybe an actual full length kwandao those would beastly! Liked and shared of course ( I want that tanto!)
Shared! And liked . You guys are awesome, every blade is a killer! Nothing is sharper and nothing is more deadly than A Cold Steel Blade! I trust my life with a Cold Steel and you Should too!
As a Kung fu teacher, practitioner, enthusiast, I can assure you I want one of these, or maybe a dozen. It is so hard to find good, well made weapons like this. I love what cold steel has done here. Please send me one and I will make a video of me doing forms and moving with this baby! Hint hint
I just received the cold seal voyager as a present and I have to tell you there is nothing I’ve ever owned that was this tough this high quality I would love one of these Chinese war swords
Luke is confusing Pudao (infantry) with Kwan Dao (mainly fantasy, exhibition, cavalry officer weapon). Pudao is a version of it. The most widespread design both geographically and historically was the zhangmadao, Wich translates exactly to horse saber.
This would make a good machete. I'm a one-man crew "trail tamer" for conservation department, and there is a constant battle of maintaining trails from invasive species such as honeysuckle, autumn olive, as well as downed tree and other such obstructions.
Looks like the Chinese War Sword is "OUT OF STOCK" on the Cold Steel website. Any idea when they are due back in stock? (Would be cool to see a "Notify me when back in stock" button on the website.) Also, would be beyond awesome to see the blacked out MAA Chinese War Sword come back!!!
