I carry the bigger RECON-1 every single day. And will the rest of my life. The ultimate work knife. The ultimate SHF pocketknife also. I modified my handles to fit my hands better, now it's perfect. It's like a mini BOWIE knife.

I recently bought the Mini Recon 1 and I found that, when closed, it makes an excellent bottle opener.

It’s a price issue in the UK. The R1 and the Lawman are £130-160 here. The R1 MINI is around £70. Great review!

It's a bit small. 3.25" blade and corresponding handle would be much better. The only 3" CS knife I love is Hold Out 3.

I’d have to go for the mini Recon , the lawman is 200 dollars here in Denmark now 🙈 Should have bought it 3-4 years ago.

I have medium hands and I think the mini is perfect. Mine is the tanto. I have the standard R1 and the micro as well. It's a great set to have. I carry the full and the micro as a pair, but the mini is a great EDC by itself. Small, slim, light, but still very stout. Love it.

The last 5 cold steels I've bought have been really sharp but basically chisel ground. It makes reprofiling a total bitch, and in some cases exposes the tip of blade outside the handle once the bevels have been evened.

Same here. Got a clip point code 4 recently and it was basically a chisel grind. Just horrible edge. Sent it back.

Where are you guys ordering your knives from? I ask because a friend of mine recently received a knock-off after buying an air light from Amazon. Whoever made the knock-off chisel ground the edge. It was a really good fake and the packaging was damn good, not surprised it wasn't noticed among their commingled stock setup.

That's an issue with many of their models. The first Hold Out 2 I purchased I had to reprofile the tip because it would snag your finger while closed. Espada has the same problem also the Voyager, Counterpoint. If you really use your knife after a while the tip will become visible while the blade is closed, and that with normal sharpening, nevermind if you have to remove a little more steel, because of damaged tip. Recon1 and AD10 are good as the blade is well nested while closed, but the rest of them really need a redesigned handle.

oof... i too had some pretty ugly grinds on both of my ad20.5 (same factory i think).

I agree that there are just two reasons to buy the Mini Recon 1 series - either you need the triad lock in a small knife or you're a Cold Steel fan. Otherwise there're tons of better options in this price range.

Tons of better options? Rubbish. Maybe for weak little liner locks.

Nice re-view of the American Lawman, co-starring the Mini Recon 1

I just got the clip point and it has better action than my Ultimate Hunter. Would have been nice to have a bit more gription but that would be my only thing I would change. The knife is excellent but if I don’t get my left side clips I may be done with CS.

Cool small knife for those with 3" laws but for me I prefer the way a 3.5" or larger fits in the hand. One thing about Cold Steel their heat treat are one of the best in the biz no matter the steel. Strong built knives are their market and they do that very well. Not many people are going to buy a civivi, CJRB, and think of it as a hard use outdoors folder. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

unfortunately a huge strength of this knife (its lock) renders it illegal for edc in the UK

Cold Steel really shouldn’t get into budget knives, they would get absolutely smashed by Civivi, Artisan and other Chinese manufacturers. High quality knives around 100-150 bucks is where they have a chance. Budget knife market is insanely competitive these days. I got a Civivi Brazen recently, and that would be a 200+ dollar knife like 7 years ago.

Cold Steel has been into "budget" knives forever. They don't do flippers, bearings and carbon fiber...which is the trend today.

They can compete where they do a design no one else does. I got the Range Boss for about $30ish, and that's a pretty good knife for the cost. It's not my favorite but it's a thin knife with a long blade that cuts well and is like carrying a feather. The Tuff Lite is pretty good too and it's a budget knife. However, those are unique designs, no one else is doing anything quite like either. But they aren't going to do well if they offer knives like everyone else makes.

That is why they only have like 3 flipper knives. But in that price range, cold steel offers something those Chinese company don't: extreme strength. Also the fact that they didn't fall in the D2 budget folder pit speaks volumes of what they are.

I got one during a recent sale that's the AUS10 that's in the mail, I just want to see if I can find a small knife that's good for the office that could still work for heavy duty if it's all I had with me. I usually prefer knives a little bigger than this one but they're not always practical to carry. I'm a big fan of the 4" Recon 1, which is a pretty good overall knife for me.
