People really shouldn't trash a knife because it's made in Taiwan. Some of the very best, and most expensive, knives being made today are sourced out to Taiwanese suppliers. Taichung City now has the lion's share of Spyderco's most premium line-up, not because of cheaper labor, but because their workmanship is so damn good these days. They're utilizing premium steels like S30V, ZDP-189, etc. unlike the Chinese, who tend to use their own 8CR series steels to death. And remember, Taiwan is a democracy......China is not. Free men make knives in Taiwan, and the quality shows.
@asmitty952
@asmitty952 9 лет назад
I agree with you 100%. There was a time when the reason to outsource to Taiwan was to keep the price low. At this point, the reason is because they're putting out arguably the best production knives on the market.
@Lex5576
@Lex5576 8 лет назад
+Namelessss4444 They go to China when they want to save money. Taiwan labor is not exactly cheap anymore. Skilled workers there stand a good chance of making at least a decent living wage. Stores like K-Mart and Walmart use to sell damn good Taiwanese made hand tools and ratchet sets dirt cheap. Now those tools are quite a bit more expensive to cope with higher labor, and Taiwan's upgraded steel quality. That's why Craftsman has gone to China. I went into Sears the other week, and was stunned to find there was not a single American made Craftsman tool in the store, and just a few Taiwanese. Even those good standard ratchet sets, once a Made in U.S.A. certainty, are now Chinese. Makes you sick to see how greedy stores have gotten. Sears can rot and fold for all I care.

I mean... It HAS to be because cheaper labor right?.... If not, then why not bring production over here and make more jobs here...? The only thing I don't like about cold steel is I don't really get the pride of ownership... When I hand a friend one of their knives they will see "Made in Taiwan" and since they don't know much about the knife world they will just assume it is a cheap knife... But if you hand them one that says "Made in USA" that almost always goes along with "This must be a pretty good knife"

I believe this Recon 1 safty locker is the best locker ever made for folded knives. Well done Cold Steel. Great quality in every aspect.

I've had my Mini Recon 1 Spear Point for about 4-5 months and love it. Super tough, takes and keeps a great edge, it's the perfect size and has great ergonomics. top notch. Thanks for all the great reviews!

I appreciate that. I'm thinking of reducing the cut tests down to just 3 or so materials for interest of time. Probably paper, cardboard, and pine. Thumb this up if you'd prefer shorter, simpler cut tests.

I've had a Recon 1 Mini with a clip point for about a year as my EDC. I completely agree with Scout's comments and review. It's a GREAT quality, VERY light and very tough EDC knife. There's not a thing I would change about it. Love the videos! Keep up the good work!!!

Hey LBS, Great review on the Recon 1 series very thorough. I ordered my Recon 1 Mini about 3 weeks ago and love it. I use it in tandem with my American Lawman also from CS. They work great as a team. I prefer the 3 1/2 inch Lawman as my hard use EDC because I have large hands, but the Recon 1 Mini is great for the smaller jobs where I need more tip control.

Great video thanks. Great looking knives. Once I tried Cold Steel, Demko design 4 Max Scout knife with tri-ad lock, I was hooked. I love Cold Steel knives and just ordered the Mini Recon 1 spear point and like everything about it. It is going to be a EDC user as I am aloud to use it most any where in my County. I am only able to carry my 4 Max Scout, Espada XL, and Voyager XL drop point for work or recreation in my town and most of my county. Here in California we do not have a state knife length limit to carry a knife but the cities and county have their own rules on lengths. The Recon 1 spear point is going to go well with my Counter Point 2 and my Grick that are EDC legal. Did I mention I love Cold Steel knives. I do love all knives and have many others of all kinds but truly appreciate the strength, size and feel of the handles and blades of my Cold Steel knives.

That's a great little knife. It looks like it is pretty thin and not too long. I have a hard time fitting most of my knives in my pocket comfortably.

The Cold Steel Recon 1 knives are made in a 2", 3", 4", 5" versions. Shown here: www.coldsteel.com/Product/RECON.20_1.20_SERIES/RECON_1_SERIES.aspx

I would prefer to get one slightly smaller than this but bigger than the Micro, with the pocket clip and everything, I just don't really need a 3" knife all the time but would still like the other features you get with bigger knives like this that you miss out on so much from smaller blades.
@TheLateBoyScout
@TheLateBoyScout 10 лет назад
I haven't put it through all the same use, but I'm confident that it's at least equal in toughness. However, the AUS-8a steel that the Recon has will not hold it's edge as long as the S30v that the PM2 has.

Typically true. However, the Cold Steel Tri-Ad lock is touted as the strongest on the market - might as well put that to the test.

That knife would be very useful cutting opening really hard plastic shrink wrap! It is the shrink wrap that when people see it they say "Oh man what a pain it is going to be to open this"!!! I remember the look on Doug's face on King of Queens when he needed to extract a pair of scissors from its shrink wap!!! LOL!!!!

Your reviews are always informative, regardless of the subject. I am thinking about how far I want to take my little channel. I try to only do videos when I think I can add something to the conversation on that subject. Do you find it difficult to come up with two video ideas every week, or is it just the opposite? Has that changed over time?

Just bought this knife for 34.99 from Amazon. Best deal I have ever seen on it, but it's only the clip point that is that price. I wish the blade was a little bigger, but not 4" like the fullsize model.

In California, if the blade is less than 2" in length, it is legal to carry them as switchblades. The Micro Recon 1 would have been an excellent choice as an inexpensive switchblade knife if the blade was 1 7/8".
@tonyhayeck45
@tonyhayeck45 9 лет назад
The recon 1 isn't a switchblade. Cold Steel doesn't make automatic knifes. In their current line up they have only one assisted opening model in their catalog.

@TheLateBoyScout
@TheLateBoyScout 9 лет назад
NecroticPlasma I just picked up a Code 4 in CTS-XHP. So far it's good, but I'm not sure how much better it is over AUS 8 - practically speaking. Personally, I'd be content with the Mini Recon in AUS 8 at the lower price.
@FactFinderGeneral
@FactFinderGeneral 8 лет назад
Idea on the Mini Recon 1 vs the full size American Lawman? I had the recon 1 regular sized and it was just way too big. Just couldn't deploy it with my hands, too much fumbling with the size. American Lawman looks similar sizing handle length but bigger blade to the Mini recon1

how hard is it to push down the lock release? does it make your thumb sore? cause that happens to me on cheap knives with this lock.

What are the pros and cons of a Spear Point compared to a Clipped Point?
@TheLateBoyScout
@TheLateBoyScout 9 лет назад
Honestly, I think the differences are negligible, and it really comes down to aesthetics. I guess, the argument could be made that a spear point has a stronger tip, but with these knives, and this steel, the difference is very minor.
@sanfranciscobay
@sanfranciscobay 9 лет назад
***** Was the Clip Point made before the Drop Point and the Spear Point? I'm thinking World War 2 era. I know spears go back thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of years.

Wolę Spyderco Albo Gerbera .To tyle z mojej strony.

Same here, I was very surprised to see that the mini recon series are actually more expensive than the full sized ones. I can't imagine a reason why, less steel, less G10. Cold Steel has some awesome knives but they have their marketing and pricing done all wrong IMO. The recon 1 full size is a very nice knife and I've loved it for the 2 years I've had it, but is it worth the 110 (maybe more, nowadays) they try to see it for on their website? Hell no its not. Amazon for Cold Steel always. Their own website will rip you off.

The crappy coating RUINS this knife for me. Take a Spyderco Manix in murder black or a Strider SMF with the Black Oxide or PVD coating. These are coatings that won't rub off. Cold Steel is the only knife brand that has this crappy coating. I have a Clip point and a Spear point Recon1 and I like the knife... but they are safe queens. I feel like I ought to strip the knife and send it off for a PVD treatment... but then how much money am I spending? I am seriously considering just selling.

Wnhen mearly all knives on the market are cnc machinexmade ! And I haven't been able to find any American made cnc machines ! ! Blade steel is proven hype ( so called super as tested steel doesn't hold an edge as well and 440c or d2 ) it's all BS hype ! All steel start in a crucible!!
