I would recommend lightly sanding in between each coat of stain. Also sand off the fray at the head of the handle that was caused by the tomahawk head. Then use a rasp file to soften up the inside of the head to prevent further fraying into the handle. You want a smooth friction lock.

Well done. Tip w the bluing products, place in a shallow dish to avoid contaminating the products in the original container. I steel wool the head and reapply blue 2nd coat. Sand back to color of choice. Again this is good looking Hawk upgrade!

I have actually begun a successful side business making Cold Steel axes cut, bite and actually WORK. Cheap sure but they just don't perform. In my opinion, save the money and have one forged. Support a local blacksmith and get a quality product. Taiwan only half make Cold Steel axes
@TheSmokinApe
@TheSmokinApe 4 года назад
Thanks for taking the time to comment. While I agree that supporting local blacksmiths is a fantastic idea, in this case I wanted a low cost hawk to play around with, I understand it's limitations and it works fine for me. I have a few other axes around should the need to use one of them arises.

You want it to be fatter at the top, so don’t sand it much there. The top is what holds it on... good luck with the project

Okay, another serious question Id really like to know... Whats the differemce between the pipe hawk and the riflemans hawk?? They look the same to me.... I guess I see the differences but they appear very similar.
@TheSmokinApe
@TheSmokinApe 9 лет назад
I think the main different is the pull or the "hammer head". You can't go wrong with either...
@musicisbrilliant
@musicisbrilliant 9 лет назад
TheSmokinApe Good point, thank you!!
@brianmccann666
@brianmccann666 5 лет назад
The shape of two tomahawks are very different. Pipe Hawk, Frontier Hawk, Spike Hawks have the same basic cutting edge shape. Rifleman's Hawk... Bigger cutting edge, thicker head, and large hammer poll. Its a heavy chopper. Very Axe like. Pipe Hawk... Is a medium chopper. Smaller hammer poll. Frontier Hawk... Is a Light Chopper. Uses Speed instead of weight to chop. No hammer poll nor spike...

NOT a Axe, NOT a Hatchet. Its a Tomahawk. There not even close to the same thing. A hatchet and a axe is, but not a tomahawk. Tomahawk REQUIREMENT (head slips down the handle) so you can use it like a knife. If you see a so called tomahawk that doesn't have a head that slips down the shaft. They are lying and misleading you. Its a hatchet then.
