@@isaacs_knives_and_knowledge it would have been nice if they had kept the saber grind like on my old Carbon V but I haven't noticed any issues with the hollow grind on the SK5 version.

Thanks, Matt. I agree it does seem to make a a fine bushcraft knife. Why don't you think we see more "bushcraft people" using them? This is my first experience with the tanto blade.

@@isaacs_knives_and_knowledge My honest answer as to why I think most “bushcrafters” don’t use a tanto is because it is not “traditional” looking and because it is meant as a fighting blade. Many bushcrafters are overly anal about their “image” in the woods I find. This is just my opinion.

@@isaacs_knives_and_knowledge I had the same problem, but the solution is simple. Go to WALMART and buy yourself a camera phone tripod. It's $20 and really portable.

Phil. I have to vehemently disagree with your comment! I initially hated all Tantos because it looked too mall ninja-ish, even though the Coldsteel has the best tanto design of them all. But I purchased the recon and took a chance 5 years ago because I loved the SRK so much and the SK5 was cheap. To my surprise, The RTanto is a better outdoors knife than my 3V/VG10/ SK5 SRK! It is better than my Fallkniven A1X/S1X! Used it exclusively on multiple trips to Maine from Florida fishing, camping, and hiking, starting fires, processing wood or shelter building. I love the RTanto even though Coldsteel doesn't make a 3V for it any longer. I have both the SK5 and the VG10 and both holds their edge exceptionally well and is so very easy to touch it off to hair popping sharpness! I now have all of the higher end 3V Coldsteel tanto in the Magnum, Master, 3 Code 4s, and two Recons tanto in SK5 and VG10. It may not have been designed with the outdoors in mind, but it turned out to be one, and an awesome one at that! Swinging this knife feels so natural and I love batoning wedges of sticks to feed my rocket stove with! Give it a try bro, I think it will win you over!!!

Those are definitely valid concerns

I thought that too initially. The curve should effect batoning adversely by causing excess torque when you hit the point end. I was completely wrong! The Recon is a better batoning knife than the SRK, period. There no great upward torque or vibrations during batoning as a matter of fact the longer blade and the curve help the Recon to readjust the blade as the grip end goes up with each successive strike. The long curve blade also make it easier to scrape fatwood when you plant the tip into a stable piece of wood as you scrape. I believe the Recon is a better outdoors knife than the SRK!

@@songokuo5131 Better can be a relative term. The San Mai is nice stuff as it is carbon steel overlayed with stainless making it a very good knife. It's also twice as expensive. The SK5 is a tough carbon steel that is easy to sharpen and much less expensive
