I've destroyed 2 pairs of jeans pockets practicing deploying the Spartan! Was it worth it? HELL YEAH!!! I can deploy that blade pretty damn good... Both are excellent knives and this is a great video!!!
The Spartan is not a Kukri shape, it is a Kopis. No doubt given it's name sake, as the Kopis is indigenous to the area known as Greece today, and the origin of the Spartan culture. Cold Steel matched the blade shape to the name with purpose. It is difficult to see from such a short blade, but the Kopis is generally a shorter sword, while the Kukri is known as a large knife with a more pronounced bend to the blade than the Kopis.
Kopis Kopis Kopis, the SPARTAN has a KOPIS blade shape not a Kukri blade shape that came after the Kopis and it isn't called the Ghurkha but the Spartan. 4Max Scout is a better buy you can choke up to do fine tasks, have a more multi use blade shape, and the one thing the Spartan should be better at - chopping, is hampered by the handle. You can chop better with the Scout due to the handle allowing a 2 fingered end grip.
Just ordered a 4 MAX Scout and own two Spartan's. I have the standard Spartan black handle with the non serrated saber grind blade as well as a gray handle full serrated full flat grind blade. The original Spartan blade profile is better for possible hard utility task work because of the saber grind having more steel at top of blade. The gray model with razor sharp serrations and full flat profile is a slashing cutting beast but definitely not quite as strong as standard model. I have med large hands and I find the Spartan handle to be amazing to really lock in. However, if you have xl or definitely XXL and above your hands wont fit well between the handle points. This is where large handed people will like the 4 Max, with no rear curved point like on Spartan they can hold knife. Great comparison and thank you for posting.
