A surprisingly likable tough folding knife from Cold Steel, new for 2015. Combing excellent CTS XHP steel in a 3.5mm thick blade, the UH is a lot more than a "hunting knife." It is a tough EDC tool that will be durable and is easy to carry. Excellent design features include a tractable and handsome pure G10 handle, TriAd lock, and no liners. Watch its performance and see why living in an online world kinda' sucks [intro!]./////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 8 out of 10

I always liked Cold Steel, but was a fan of Spyderco, Benchmade and others as well. But with this massive steel upgrade, combined with the Tri-Ad lock and better designs, build quality, I think Cold Steel has now become the best knife manufacturer in the world.

@pkwithblades7565
@pkwithblades7565 9 лет назад
Well I'm sorry, but how exactly can one make the claim that Cold Steel is the best knife manufacturer in the world? Saying that about ANY manufacturer is ridiculous because there's no objective basis for the claim. And not to mention the fact that cold steel is not even in the same WORLD in terms of quality as manufacturers like ZT, spyderco, CRK, Hinderer, and Rockstead, to name a few.
@dany1441
@dany1441 9 лет назад
PK withBlades Cold Steel was always in the same league as any other major manufacturer in terms of build quality. They've had the Tri-Ad lock now for many years, which is peerless in the folding knife world. Have you even handled a knife like the American Lawman? (just an example). Most other folders feel flimsy and weak compared. The only realistic criticism of Cold Steel was that they used medium to low quality steels, whereas Spyderco and Benchmade (to name their major competitors) used a wide variety of steels, many of them top-end. That is now changing rapidly with their use of high end Carpenter- and CPM steels. There is now literally no folder than can beat a Recon 1, a Code Four, an American Lawman (to name just a few) in any meaningful way. Even ZT, which is considered higher-end than Cold Steel, uses liner- and framelocks, which simply have to take a back seat against the Tri-Ad lock (I own 2 ZT's). Elmax is an awesome steel but so is XHP. There is no arguing taste. I own an XM-18 3.5", and I love the knife. But objectively it's not a better knife than an American Lawman in XHP, which is a quarter of the price. And Hinderer is not really a manufacturer, his knives are semi-customs. I stopped buying CRKT years ago. They were mostly rubbish, cheaply made though sometimes well-designed. I have no experience with Rockstead but I do know they're hideously expensive, a different market segment from what we're talking about. I owned a Sebenza was, really tried to see what all the fuss was about, sold it as the overpriced hyper-up folder that it is. I own a Strider SMG, whichalso is not a very good folder but I just love the design. Overpriced as well. Compare Cold Steel to Spyderco, Benchmade, Emerson, Kershaw, SOG, CRKT, even ZT, any others whose knives are made in factories, mass-produced. In most if not all objective ways, CS wins. I'll never stop buying Spydercos, but that's because I love their designs. For dependability, reliability, strength and now steel, It's CS. Just my two cents worth. ;)

Cts-xhp is probably my favorite edc steel right now. I hec edc a Spyderco Dice everyday, and after going through tie wraps, cardboard and opening endless boxes, I have yet to have to put it on my wicked edge to sharpen it. After 4-5 months it still has the factory edge. Very impressive to me. That along with the lack of rust. I'm glad to see Cold Steel using it now, and I will be more interested in their products because of that. The steel upgrade along with the lack of the black coating on the blade and the price point puts cold steel and their tri ad lock back on the map for me. Great Gift knives too. Cheers nutn.

Man, Nutn, I'm loving the new Cold Steel Catalog. Just got the Chaos kukri on the cover. What a great tool in SK5. Half the price of my premium carbon bladed Kukri and very sharp. The handle is much slimmer and oh so comfortable. Also have the Double edge Chaos Dagger. It features, the EXACT blade shape and thickness of my tai pan and is a wonderful modern update of a classic fighting blade. What a great series! Wish they'd do a bowie version with a trailmaster or recon scout blade. Hope you get a hold of some of these awesome knives.

I never owned a single CS product before but while browsinf a popular rope cut test tread on a forum I saw this knife and it had 2 things that surprised me, well really one becausectge second is the result of this. It said it was cts xhp at 63.5hrc which is a proper heat treat for this steel imo, not 60-61 that everyone else does. As a result it did better than more expensive knives with higher wear resistant steels like s90v, elmax and m390. So I figured for $100 I can give it a try and see how I like it, for me its worth it just because of the hardness. And so far I am very glad that I bought this knife. I am going to send it out to have the hardness tested to see where it's at but I cut up a bunch of hard maple (and boy does this sucker chew wood), cut up cardboard and you cant even tell as it still shaves and cuts phobebook paper clean. I gotta say this and Bokers new Solo with cpm 3v at 62-63 hrc hafe put a smile on my face and show that you can still get high hardnees heat treat on a knife from a production company and under $160 when usually you have to go custom knives for that. I love spyderco and benchmade has some good knives but I wish they would put out a few knives each year made for cutting, ie high hardnees, proper heat trwat with cryo and thin behind the edge. I kniw why they cant do that with every knife buf id love to see a Gayle Bradley in cpm m4 at 64-65 hrc and .012 behind the edge or something in m390 or elmax at 63hrc, hell I'd be happy with s35vn at 61-62 hrc so people who think its subpar to s30v can see that its not, its just ran softer than needed (except microtech and fantoni). It might seem like im asking for much but if CS and especially Boker can put out something in those hardness ranges, I see no reason why spyderco who everyone praises for their heat treat can throw us a knife or two like that. Rant over.

I have an Ultimate Hunter from around 2007. The blade shape seems identical, but the steel is AUS 8A. The handle is different, similar to the voyagers from that same time. Completely agree about the catalog thing. I much prefer reading something printed vs electronic. Tried to get an updated map + camping guide from Province of British Columbia but couldn't find anything about that on their website anymore. I emailed them, and then they sent it. It's getting harder and harder to get printed literature of all kinds. For a WROL situation, I believe having a good library would be extremely important.

I'm surprised you still haven't reviewed anything that John Winkler has made in his Winkler II line. They are pretty amazing.

based on composition and reading on BF, the new steel the carpenter cts xhp is like D2, but with much better corrosion resistance. in addition, i imagine it has even better overall properties that D2 in general, such as edge retention, toughness and strength, and perhaps other factors, but they may be minimal. But in general its like D2 with much better edge corrosion resistance. i imagine it was a better choice than vg10. they have a much more expensive folder coming out in cpm 20cv, and also as the guy below said the ak47 field knife in 3v is pretty cool. All the 3v knives look cool, and xhp is a great upgrade. 20cv is better, but much more expensive and only one like 1 or 2 knives i believe. But can't wait to get a recon 1 clip in xhp, and the ak47 field in 3v. That and a TM in 01 and you could go CS all the way. The swift 1 and 2 look great too. Add a leatherneck too, and a spyderco EDC and you're all good. I like the stretch, reviewed already in ZDP. I like the recon scout too.

Hey Nutn' SCCY CPX-2 reliable or unreliable concealed carry option? I've looked through your vids but don't see any reviews on SCCY guns. As a small 9mm pistol around ~17ounces with 10+1 round mags, I would imagine this being your favorite option but I haven't heard you mention it so I'm thinking maybe you don't like it some reason, or maybe you're working on reviewing it; either way I would appreciate your thoughts on this pistol if you've had any experience with it. Thanks!

***** Not sure. Compared to the Glock 26, smaller and lighter with same round count for less money--sounds like more research is warranted. Glock wins on track record, SCCY wins on... everything else? I guess since DAO on every shot, SCCY is "worse" for accuracy vs. G26. Is the SCCY's extra 5 ounces worth the "upgrade" for an extra 3 rounds over the Kel-Tec PF-9? PF-9 is single stack, too--so thinner and smaller, too. Debatable, not sure which Nutn would pick.

yeah the most important factor for me is reliability, and i usually like to take nutn's word for whether or not a pistol is reliable but he has no content on this one in particular, probably going to lean towards the g26 at this point, i prefer the high mag and reliability over the kel tec pf9's thin and lightness.

This is a lot like the Gerber Gator folding knife with 154cm. I guess this steel is better though, but the knife designs are virtually identical. Gerber makes a lot of stuff that ends up being imitated (sometimes better than their original). They must have had good designers over the years over there. Would love to see a tri-ad Gerber Covert folder type of knife by Cold Steel. The double bevel 154cm black Covert folder is my most edc'd knife. No tri-ad, but it does have the roto-lock for extra safety. But the Tri-ad lock cannot be beat for sheer confidence in a blade NOT closing on you.

I've never cared for cold steel knives but this is a decent design.
