Cold Steel US 1860 Heavy Cavalry Saber is an exact replica of the real deal in history, made with solid brass fittings and a 1050 carbon steel blade, sharpened from mid-way to the tip on both sides. This cavalry saber is extremely long and heavy but it is also a very durable weapon too. The scabbard is made of steel too!

U.S. cavalry swords were heavy (as opposed to infantry swords). However, they were designed to be used on horseback. so the momentum of the galloping sword aided in its use. Also, parrying was not necessary, because if you missed your target, you have already galloped several yards away, leaving you with no need for defense. I have this saber, and yes it is HEAVY AS HECK! Thanks for posting, and great vid as always!

***** Watched an expert demonstrate how those blades should be used on foot. You block with the dull part of the blade immediately letting the opponent's blade slip off yours to your left. as soon as it clears the edge you slash them across the face/ body with your blade while their blade is out of position to defend. You may still need to finish them off but they aren't likely to recover from their mistake if you connect. I suppose the same trick would work against a mounted opponent.

Despite the name, this is indeed a replica of the 1840 heavy sabre, often called the "wrist-breaker." It was replaced with the 1860 light sabre precisely because the weight and balance was too much for most people.

cygil1 it depends on who was using it on know a good deal of foot officer's loved it for the reach and hammer blows you can do with it I used saber fenching with this kind of sword it all about building strength in the right parts of a body's and above all train everyday love this sword

One reason for the length of the blade was to be able to strike or thrust effectively at infantry from horseback. Not being sharp near the grip allows parries without too much damage being inflicted.

Thank you! Yes increasing knowledge and exploration of different weapons is part of martial art cultivation! For sure that is a must-do for any true martial artist in their lifetime journey!

That Saber was made for fighting from horseback. That is why it is longer and heavier at the tip and the center of balance is further away from the handle.

I like that you want to explore western weapons to increase your knowledge. Sabers are wielded very differently than katanas as well as gim swords. Even the way you grip the weapon is different. Keep up the reviews.

The hollow ground portion in the center of the blade you referred is the fuller. Also, the unsharpened portion of the edge is used for perrying attacks from other blades. And yes, these sabers are very blade heavy, but they were meant to be used from horseback primarily, so with the momentum of your mount under you, the weight of the blade actually worked in your favor to produce huge cleaving cuts. Using it from the ground does take practice though. I know from experience haha

I agree, I too have this particular sabre and it's pretty heavy. But it's definitely a good sword. I'm sure some folks already told you, but a sabre with that bulk was used mainly on horseback, it's lighter cousin was better suited for foot soldiers. I also know that the blunt half was used to help block and parry the opposing blade. The nickname for this one was "Ol' Wrist Breaker" due to reports of the heavy sabre injuring the wrists of the wielders. I'm glad that I own it.

@JTelli786
@JTelli786 11 лет назад
Correct me if im wrong but i beleive this Saber was made this way because it was purposed nearly only for Calvary. Handel is ment for one hand so the Calvaryman could still have control of his horse, long blade sharpened twords the end because a man on horse back needs more length to get to a man on the ground, and who on horse back would use the lower part of the blade unless there target was riding the same horse as they were.

Yes, heavy cavalry sabers are not meant for dueling. However, other varieties of saber, such as the cutlass or "dueling saber" most certainly are.

"Don't mistaken that dull blade is not scary". Well said, and I really enjoyed this presentation. This chap seems a cross between Jackie Chan and Iron Chef Morimoto. He is correct in his assessment that the 1860 Heavy is balanced forward of optimum. Grasshopper, this is so one can smite the enemy from the back of a horse, and not become another bowlegged man walking the Earth.

There's false-edge cuts in sabre fencing (and pretty much every other form of HEMA), however I'd avoid sharpening it if there's a chance of screwing up the cross-sectional geometry and such
@johnsmith-mh6hh
@johnsmith-mh6hh 11 лет назад
You should give it a try and tell me how it works out, the false ede is for parrying so its useless unless you plan to use it in a real sword fight.I plan on getting one and sharpening the whole thing.

I wouldn't do it because there is a point for the false edge.. also, if you swing it at the target, the false edge can cut too!

Cavalry sabers could be used for dueling, but that was rare. Sabers meant for dueling are of en entirely different variety, as they had to be much lighter to be a practical weapon on the ground.

Use whetstone and do it manually .. if you are scared of making a 2nd bevel then you better learn the trick to sharpening with some cheaper blade first because it is all about experience....

@eolsunder
@eolsunder 11 лет назад
yea the calvary sabre was longer so you could use it from horseback and reach your foe. You didn't need the whole blade sharp because you wouldn't be cutting anything with the part near the hilt, and also so you wouldn't injure yourself accidently. You wouldn't have the far tip near yourself so you didn't worry about cutting yourself or the horse.

im western and i practice tai chi and recently shinkendo. but i think western weapons are cool. i think it is funny how he mention how long western weapons are. compared to a jian i get it
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 11 лет назад
Yup~ exp and patience~ just do it with more blades before you go to the long stuff like this. Also, I find that now I can do better with whetstone than using a guide system like lansky, holy cow.. my eyeballing is better than the tool !

The way this saber was used was like a lance. It was made to stab as the cavalry man charged.
@CelticRider84
@CelticRider84 8 лет назад
+MarvelDcImage Nope, it was designed to be held out and clip foot soldiers as you rode by. Stabbing with such a long saber offered two problems; 1, it could get stuck. 2, if it got stuck, it probably broke your wrist. Best to let this beast just hang out there and clip people; the speed of the horse, and the weight of the blade, on the narrow edge could go through human tissue and bone with ease. Based on it's length and weight; not saying it's not possible, but that's not how this particular saber is designed to be used. I know there is a technique in which you turn your wrist and let the horse's speed draw the blade from your target, but this blade is too big and heavy for that technique to be used that frequently. Speculation, of course; if all you did was train in that, you would certainly be strong enough to pull it off. People today are far weaker than our predecessors were because we don't have to do as much physical work as they did on a daily basis. (proof? Never seen a medieval gym, have you? never heard of any knights, peasants, farmers, nobles, etc, ever going to the gym for a couple hours every day.)

No need. The actual sword this is based on wasn't kept razor-sharp either. The momentum of thrusting your sword through the enemy while on horseback meant the sword didn't have to be as sharp as your average infantry sword.

That's stupid, because you are using the weapon wrong. I can weld this weapon as a nice broadsword but it is not suitable for a single hand dao cuz the spec don't fit at all. You can use it like a bagwa broadsword though, the blade do fit that property abit. I will do a nice form demo in the future for sure, hehehe, you know me well.. I ALWAYS do forms demo that shock people with these weapons.. hahaha..
