Episode Two of Mike's Big Martial Folder Exploration Journey, looking at the unusually-shaped Voyager Vaquero, apparently designed specifically with martial application in mind, and a favorite of Lynn himself. So how does it perform as a martial (and utility) tool?

This is why I always choose serrated when I have the option. Lynn Thompson: “A serration for self defense is always preferable. It will cut 3x deeper in flesh than a plain edge. It will cut through clothing, it will cut through a leather jacket. You can’t hide from serrated edge. Especially a Cold Steele serration.” Also Lynn discusses that he Vaquero blade design is phenomenal for caching opponents blades in the concave of the knife and using the belly to draw through the flesh which goes ever so deep due to its shape. Listening to him explain how it’s to be used martially makes so much sense. Loving the series,🇺🇸🦅

Yeah, me as well, I hope the 4" Talwar gets made with serrations; until then a serrated Spartan, and occasionally a Black Talon II, find a home in a pocket near me.

I'll probably add a serrated version.

It's a very wicked blade, but I try not to dull mine. The plain edge is a good training tool. I keep the serrated version for those situations you hope never come.

Yeah I have the serrated version. Once I saw for myself how absolutely brutal serrated blades are I always get serrated versions now. They do cut much better

I started carry the large Espada g10. I carried it for 5 years while i was studying FMA in Florida. It was a great knife not very heavy but a feeling of quality. Since i was in Florida an only wearing shorts i bought the vaquero xl serrated after watching lynn describing why he designed it. Ive been carrying it ever since about 10-12 years. One of the best all around self-defense knives ever. The serrated is much better knife in my opinion. I just wanted to add what sold me on coldsteel besides affordability was the fact lynn Thompson is a martial artist and uses his blades training. Many designers claim to be martial arts but they make tiny knives that really aren't martial. I don't believe you can go wrong with any coldsteel its just a matter of finding what best fits your style. Which is better then make something try to fit your style. Only a opinion.

At the beginning when I had the knife I pushed a Chinese chopstick under the clip for 15 minutes, and after that the tension is now absolutely perfect 😅🤷‍♂️

My absolute favorite is the Voyager Vaquero XL serrated. But I never sharpen it. Is only for self-defense.

All the XL voyager models are my favorite they stay secure in the pocket even with a short pocket clip and with the thumb stud they flip open easy and not "waving thumb plate" to get caught up in the pocket.

Of all the videos the I have watch yours was the most complete, smart and articulate and well done. I did purchase a Vaquero with a serrated blade. You have been a big help, it's such a hard pick the internet is a big rabbit hole and this is my 1st big folder. I wanted to get a nice Bowie knife but I wanted something I could just put in my pocket or hip pocket. Thank you Mr. Rizza. Cheers from Colorado.

@@michaelrizzo5523 I hope to get in this Saturday, I looking forward to it. Keep the videos coming I really enjoy hearing from knife guys who really do their research. I studied Ta kown do in S.Korea for 5 years (2nd Dan) but bladed marital arts was not taught while I served in the U.S. Army. The Korean people look very negative at knifes and you can get in big legal trouble for even using a pocket knife with a long blade.

@@tumbleweed6658 TKD is a hell of a skillset. I tore myself up in similar demanding arts. I mostly study knife arts as an adjunct to sword, as there are many similarities. My basic philosophy is all close quarters fighting is either fencing (hitting hopefully without getting hit), grappling, or in that particularly risky crossover range both at once.

COLD STEEL has a lot of XL folding knives for defense purposes, with different blade shapes, and even the larger espada xl, I really recommend these. However, deploying this knife requires some skills. The clip on the handle has a groove. You can place the second knuckle of your index finger against the groove, and hold the handle on the other side of the knife with your thumb, and then pull it out of the pocket. Then open the blade like a telescopic stick and instantly get the optimal handle position.

Great video Mike!!! I'm giving that Vaquero a closer second look. I haven't gotten that one specifically because of that very slender tip. But, seeing it perform in your hands is giving me food for thought! I'm liking it's martial application, maybe the serrated version?
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! I think the serrated version would be the better choice for focused martial application. The plain edge isn't bad, but has a lot of competition in the "all around" big EDC class. Espadas are up starting next week.

I still think the ti lite is the best cold steel pocket sword. It can cut good enough but it can stab way better. Blade is narrow and pointy

Hey, new subscriber here. You don't like tanto voyager? Is American tanto not good for self-defense? thank you
@michaelrizzo5523

I picked up a Tanto Voyager XL which I'll review, and I have a few other American Tanto blades, and they all have the same pros and cons for me. They're definitely designed to be durable in penetrating hard targets, but on my spectrum of tip geometry from "needle" to "shovel" they're more shovel (or chisel), which means they'll meet more resistance penetrating soft targets, but will be structurally stronger than a narrower tip, create a much bigger channel and impart more impact in the stab (make sure there's a substantial guard to keep hands from sliding up onto blades under impact). That can make it very good for stabbing as a martial tool, but in slashing and utility slicing, especially for knives like the Tanto Voyager that have very straight edges, that "corner" between the tip and edge is doing the best work. That makes it less useful for me for certain utility tasks than a blade with a belly, and over time with hard use and lots of resharpening I've found that corner starts to round off and become less effective. I suppose you could re-profile the tip and get that sharp corner back, but I lack the skill to do so. So I just don't personally prefer them enough for all-around use to carry one.

What is your opinion on the drop point is the point acute ?
@michaelrizzo5523

I did a review of the drop point and clip point. The clip is more acute and a bit better as a slicer, the drop is stouter. I really like them both.

Seems like these cold steel knives are consistently good as long as you don't get one that slipped through QC like that Laredo.
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 7 месяцев назад
People got bent that I criticized the Laredo, but I have so many much cheaper CS knives that I think had better fit and finish. Their folders have been consistently very good.

At what angle would you resharpen the Vaquero? How about the Espada?
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 3 месяца назад
Since I don't like using it as a utility knife, I haven't used the Vaquero enough to need to resharpen it. And despite all the chopping, carving, box cutting and slicing I've done with the Espada I've only needed to occasionally refresh the edge, which I do freehand. But based on the guides on my tool, I'd say less than 20 degrees. The edges are pretty keen.

@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 6 месяцев назад
I can't speak to the serrated Vaquero, which a lot of folks seem to love, but I just like the balance and profile of the Espada overall, and use it more in general.
@onesky8647
@onesky8647 7 месяцев назад
The Vaquero is on the list of knives I keep postponing to buy, just like the Ritual from CRKT.😂 Maybe it’s just me, but the martial only aspect is not enough to justify getting them. You seem worried about the less than deep carry clip, when the business end may get you even more in trouble in certain situations. lol I did get the Wildcat from CRKT to have a sample of a karambit style folder, so I’m not completely against this type of design. :)
@michaelrizzo5523
@michaelrizzo5523 7 месяцев назад
I'm also at the point of not buying more knives just for martial application, they have to be useful. I'm lucky that folding knife carry isn't discouraged most places I go, but if I go somewhere "sensitive" I'll just drop it all the way down in the pocket. And watch out for those specific cities that limit blade length. That said, I think other CS designs are much better for practical uses.
@watariovids1645
@watariovids1645 7 месяцев назад
I have a Ritual and it really isn't a very good general purpose pocket knife compared to any plain old design. Opening boxes is much more difficult than any normal style blade, but it sure does get a reaction when you show it to people. High Cool factor, low general practicality. Still find myself carrying it over my other knives though.

I disagree with you. Do you buy a gun for bread cutting? The guns as well as Vaquero XL are for self-defense.
