i use the winrar recovery system, so basically u can give ur bluray disks "raid5" or "raid6", so if 1 disk becomes unreadable the rest will be enough to recover all the data

do you put the media directly on the disk or do you use something like 7Zip to split them with parity like i've seen others do? just got my 100GB m disks so trying to see what's best

@@williamvaughan1218Dual layer on anything is inferior. And then even if it does work, you risk losing 50gb of data if there is any degradation instead of 25. Which is why I only use Taiyo Yuden DVD. Rated for 100 plus years and if I lose 4.7gb, it’s not nearly as hard to recover from than if I were to lose 25gb. Or god forbid 50.

Yes, I used a couple of USB flash drives to store critical data, but only to find that the data was eventually lost on both drives. Other flash drives, that I powered up now and then, survived. Meanwhile, data that I stored on DVD's decades ago, is as good as new.

Only way to go on a consumer level to ensure your data stays readable for generations. I use Taiyo Yuden DVD’s only because I’m not willing to lose 25gb of data on one disc. I can easily rebuild 4.7.

My issue isn’t that I don’t have hard drives or cloud storage to backup. It’s Bit Rot. Certain critical photo and video files I need a “hard copy” so if a girl gets Corrupted on HD then I can go back and rebuild

Good job on making your first contact with blu ray. Welcome to the archive world. If you want the longest lasting disks, use a quality burner or use 25gb blu rays since duel layered discs tend to have burning problems when switching layers. For media just use either a Verbatim BD-r (HtL) or Mdisk. These Offer archival benefits that should suffice your needs. In terms of software I would strongly recommend imgburn, using windows for burning just feels wrong and stupid, and NEVER select the “like a flash drive” since it would cause some weird issues and lots of confusion, either format it as udf or use like a cd dvd option.

Which quality BDXL burner do you recommend? Is Verbatim 43888 (pioneer BDR-UD04) any good for the purpose? Thanks.

@@AnalogFoundry pioneer is a very good high quality blu ray disk drive manufacturer, so I strongly recommend getting that verbatim drive. If you can I would get the internal desktop drive since they offer more powerful lasers and are generally faster than external drives.

Optical storages is the best for archiving data. There is nothing more reliable. The only drawback is the small capacity.

I recommend Taiyo Yuden DVD’s. Losing 25gb could be catastrophic to some. Losing 4.7? Maybe not. You could make dual copies of those 25gb discs which would ensure better redundancy but I’m still stuck on DVD. But I also don’t cold store terabytes worth of data. I’m right at around 1tb. I recommend to anyone with less than 1tb of data wishing to cold store to stick with DVD. Much cheaper and less risk. And smacking your drive against the rear of your box? Real dumb. That’s a good way to offset the balance of the potentiometers, thus offsetting the laser which will cause bad writes. Don’t do this. Also, dropping your hard drive is definitely not good. But even taking the best hard drive and storing it inside a shock proof, water proof, fireproof enclosure still ensures that it will not read data in around 5-8 years due to data rot. Losing the drives ability to hold its electromagnetic charge. It’s a thing. And it’ll bite your ass. Which is why we always cold store with optical solutions. Or tape. But tape is extremely expensive. And does degrade unless in optimal storage conditions.
@AbsurdScandal
@AbsurdScandal 5 месяцев назад
Hard drive bitrot is mostly due to mechanical causes, such as bad sectors, small industrial imperfections, dust or moisture getting inside, etc. The actual magnetism on the platter can last for decades before normalisation occurs. I've got hdds pushing 20 years old with the data intact, for example. I'm lucky those drives didnt get any mechanical or firmware imperfections though, which would've caused early bitrot.

Do you really want to gamble 1tb of your precious data on one disc? I’m all DVD. Taiyo Yuden rated at 100 plus years in cold storage. If I lose 4.7gb, at least it’s only that. Losing 25gb on blu ray could be catastrophic for some people. I can’t imagine relying on one disc for 1tb. I wouldn’t sleep at night. The cost of blu ray with the gamble of losing that much data isn’t worth it for me. Yet. Once the cost of M-Disc blu rays goes down, then maybe. Because then I can make two copies of each disc.

Look up data rot. All HDD’s and SSD’s rely on their electromagnetic current to hold their data. Within 5-8 years, that current degrades and causes data loss. No. The only solution for cold archiving of data is optical. Preferably DVD. On Taiyo Yuden discs only. I’m not willing to lose 25gb of data on one disc. If it happens to go bad. Are you?
@Damnesia2

@@EyeForKnowledge. If your data needs require long term cold storage, go for it, the cost is less of an issue. If your data is truly that important that you can't afford to lose it, cold storage is also not the way to go, rather get a NAS instead and follow a 3-2-1 data archiving approach (3 backups on 2 separate media with 1 offsite). I'm very well aware of data rot which affects everything, HDDs lose magnetism over time (although they can hold for longer than SSDs, ~10 years for cold storage for a new drive), SSDs have data degradation as trapped electrons jump the gap out of the floating gate (the time varies by write cycles, the more writes, the less time it lasts, ~5 years for cold storage for a new drive). Optical media rots slower than HDDs (~25 years for cold storage from new), but you probably have CDs / DVDs at home that are already unreadable (practice and theory unfortunately do not align perfectly and other factors play a role too), tape lasts even longer than CDs/DVDs/Blu-Ray (~50 years), but every storage media has its downsides: speed, reliability, storage capacity, rewritability, etc. I was simply stating the fact that where I live, HDDs are significantly cheaper than optical drives (to the point where a NAS is cheaper to create and maintain), not making a statement for cold storage longevity. It's always important to research what's best for your needs.

HDD’s last 5-8 years at best. Optical last 100 years plus. Look up data rot and how the loss of electromagnetic current (which is what holds the data into an HDD or SSD) diminishes in these drives. Not to mention any mechanical device weather brand new or old is doomed for failure. Two types of hard drives: Those that have failed. And those that will. Be smart. Archive your shit into disc.

Dude, if you are not going to use quality media to archive files, like M-Discs, there is no point in wasting time writing and storing those discs. Bad-quality media will go bad as much as hard drives.

I agree to a certain extent. I would never cold store my archived data in anything but Taiyo Yuden DVD’s. I’m not willing to lose 25gb of data if one of the discs goes bad. That could be catastrophic. 4.7 on a DVD? Maybe not so much. A lot of the M-Disk stuff is marketing nonsense. I have personally tested both M-Disk and Taiyo Yuden by freezing them, storing them inside a water tray in the sun for a few months and found after the “lower quality” Taiyo Yuden disc dried out, it read fine. Now, that being said, I don’t expect your regular store bought cheap DVD to have the same result. But you can get a spool of 100 TY discs for $35. A spool of 100 M-Disks will run you around $200. We’re talking semantics here. A TY disk will last a couple hundred years and an M disk will last 1000. Is that extra cost worth it? As long as it lasts well into my children’s lifetime, it’ll be their problem at that point to convert it all over to the next latest and greatest storage medium.
